The Last Bite at Hale Manor / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Kitchen Door

Nobody left Hale Manor that night.

That was the first thing Vincent Hale made clear.

The second thing was that nobody was allowed to pretend this was just a misunderstanding.

The guests who had arrived expecting an elegant evening of expensive food and polite conversation now sat scattered throughout the dining room like witnesses waiting for a trial to begin.

Molly stood near the wall, feeling every pair of eyes on her.

Some looked grateful.

Others looked annoyed.

A few looked suspicious.

She understood why.

People like the ones sitting around that table did not like chaos. They paid for comfort. They paid for silence. They paid for problems to disappear before they ever reached them.

But Molly had spent most of her life learning that problems did not disappear.

They waited.

They grew.

And eventually, they found a way out.

A security guard approached the kitchen entrance.

“Mr. Hale, we brought everyone who was working tonight.””

One by one, the staff entered.

The housekeeper.

The assistant chef.

The two servers.

The kitchen helper.

Everyone looked nervous.

Everyone except Vincent.

He stood at the head of the table, still wearing his black suit and open white shirt, looking less like a dinner host and more like a man investigating a crime scene.

Molly watched him carefully.

She had expected arrogance.

She had expected him to blame everyone below him.

That was how powerful people usually behaved.

But Vincent did something unexpected.

He looked at every employee in the room.

“I want the truth,” he said.

“Not the answer that protects someone’s job. Not the answer that keeps this family comfortable. The truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Chef Adrian looked down.

Eleanor remained seated.

Molly noticed something strange.

Eleanor was not angry anymore.

She was thinking.

That scared Molly more than yelling would have.

A person who lost control was dangerous.

A person who never lost control was worse.

Vincent turned toward the kitchen assistant.

“What time was the first plate prepared?””

The young man swallowed.

“Seven fifteen, sir.””

“And who handled it?””

“Chef Adrian.””

“Anyone else?””

The assistant hesitated.

Vincent noticed.

“Anyone else?””

The young man glanced toward Adrian.

That small movement said more than words.

“Answer me.””

The assistant looked down.

“Mrs. Hale came into the kitchen.””

The room became still.

Eleanor slowly looked up.

“And?””

The assistant’s voice became quieter.

“She spoke with Chef Adrian.””

“What did she say?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I was cleaning the storage area. I couldn’t hear everything.””

Vincent looked at Eleanor.

“Did you ask him to change my plate?””

Eleanor smiled slightly.

“Of course not.””

“Did you enter the kitchen?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She paused.

Then answered smoothly.

“To congratulate Adrian on the dinner.””

Molly almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too perfect.

Everything Eleanor said sounded rehearsed.

Like she had already prepared answers before anyone asked questions.

Vincent noticed too.

He turned back toward Adrian.

“What happened after she left?””

Adrian remained silent.

The room waited.

Finally, he spoke.

“She didn’t tell me to do anything.””

Eleanor’s eyes moved toward him.

Just for a second.

But Molly saw it.

A warning.

A reminder.

Adrian saw it too.

His shoulders tightened.

Vincent stepped closer.

“You’re protecting her.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked frustrated.

“I’m protecting myself.””

That changed the atmosphere.

Vincent stopped.

“Explain.””

The chef ran a hand over his face.

For the first time, he looked exhausted instead of afraid.

“I didn’t poison anything.””

“Then why did you change the plate?””

Adrian looked at the floor.

Silence.

Then he said:

“Because I was told to.””

Every person in the room reacted.

Even Eleanor.

Just slightly.

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“By who?””

Adrian looked toward the table.

Then toward Molly.

Then away.

“I can’t.””

Vincent’s voice dropped.

“You can.””

“No, you don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Adrian’s breathing became uneven.

“Mr. Hale, you think this is about tonight.””

Vincent said nothing.

“But it isn’t.””

The room went quiet.

Molly felt a chill move through her.

Because she realized something.

The dinner wasn’t the beginning.

It was the result of something that had been happening for a long time.

Vincent noticed too.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked around the room.

At the mansion.

At the people inside it.

“This house has been keeping secrets for years.””

Nobody moved.

Eleanor stood.

“That’s enough.””

Vincent looked at her.

“No. It isn’t.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Molly saw it.

For the first time, Eleanor looked less like someone controlling the room and more like someone losing control of it.

Vincent walked toward Adrian.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You don’t know what you’re asking.””

“I know exactly what I’m asking.””

“No, you don’t.””

The chef’s voice cracked.

“If I tell you who gave me the order, you’re going to realize this wasn’t an attack from outside your family.””

Vincent stared at him.

“Who was it?””

Adrian looked toward Eleanor.

Nobody breathed.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Someone who has been sitting at your table for years.””
