Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Recipe
The kitchen became the center of the investigation.
Nobody sat.
Nobody spoke unless Vincent asked a question.
The luxurious dinner party had transformed into something else entirely.
A search for the person hiding in plain sight.
Chef Adrian stood near the counter, looking exhausted.
“I should have told you everything sooner.””
Vincent stared at him.
“Yes.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I was scared.””
“You were scared enough to help someone poison me.””
“I didn’t know that was happening.””
Vincent stepped closer.
“But you knew something was wrong.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Molly watched Vincent carefully.
She noticed something.
He was angry.
But underneath the anger was disappointment.
Because Adrian wasn’t a stranger.
He had cooked for Vincent’s family for years.
He had been trusted.
And betrayal from someone familiar hurt differently.
“Tell me what happened,” Vincent said.
Adrian took a deep breath.
“Three days ago, someone left instructions for me.””
“Where?””
“In my office.””
“Written?””
“No.””
“Digital?””
Adrian shook his head.
“A recording.””
Molly frowned.
“A recording of what?””
“Of your father.””
Vincent went still.
The kitchen became silent.
“What?””
Adrian looked terrified.
“I heard his voice.””
Vincent’s expression changed.
“My father has been dead for twelve years.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
“I don’t know.””
Nobody spoke.
Molly felt a strange uneasiness.
Because this was no longer just about money.
Someone had found a way to use Vincent’s deepest wound against him.
“Where is the recording?”” Vincent asked.
Adrian looked away.
“I destroyed it.””
Vincent stared.
“Why?””
“Because after I heard it, I knew whoever sent it wanted me to do something terrible.””
“What did the recording say?””
Adrian hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father said you couldn’t trust anyone in this house.””
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
Molly watched him absorb the words.
She expected anger.
Instead, she saw something worse.
Doubt.
Because the worst lies were the ones that sounded possible.
Adrian continued.
“The message said if I didn’t follow instructions, the truth about my own family would come out.””
Vincent looked at him.
“What truth?””
Adrian said nothing.
“Chef.””
“I have a son.””
The answer surprised Molly.
Adrian’s voice became quieter.
“He’s seventeen. He made a mistake years ago. Something stupid. Something that could ruin his future if the wrong people found out.””
Vincent understood immediately.
Someone had leverage.
They always did.
Fear was how people controlled others.
Molly looked at the chef.
“So they threatened your son.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you still didn’t tell Vincent?””
Adrian looked ashamed.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Molly understood that.
Not because she agreed.
Because she knew what desperation looked like.
People did things when they believed they had no choices.
Vincent walked toward the kitchen window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he asked:
“Who had access to my father’s old recordings?””
Nobody answered.
Vincent turned around.
“That question matters.””
Molly thought about it.
Then something clicked.
“Mrs. Hale.””
Everyone looked at her.
Eleanor had been standing silently near the doorway.
Molly hadn’t even noticed when she entered.
But now the room changed.
Eleanor looked at Molly.
“Excuse me?””
Molly swallowed.
“Your father’s things. Who kept them after he died?””
Vincent looked at Eleanor.
And for the first time, Eleanor looked uncomfortable.
“Some belongings remained in the family.””
“Who had access?”” Vincent asked.
Eleanor didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Vincent walked toward her.
“Answer me.””
Her expression hardened.
“You are accusing me based on the word of a waitress and a frightened chef.””
“No.””
Vincent stopped inches away.
“I’m questioning why everyone who knows something keeps avoiding the same answer.””
Eleanor stared at him.
Then she smiled.
But this time, there was no warmth.
“You really think finding the truth will give you peace?””
Vincent said nothing.
“Your father spent his whole life looking for enemies.””
She stepped closer.
“And in the end, he found them.””
Molly felt the tension rise.
Because Eleanor wasn’t denying everything.
She was saying something else.
Something worse.
Vincent’s voice lowered.
“What are you trying to tell me?””
Eleanor looked at him.
Then at Molly.
Then at Adrian.
And she said:
“I’m telling you that your father’s death was not the only thing he lied about.””
The words hung there.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
May you like
And somewhere inside Hale Manor, another secret began to surface.
One that could change everything Vincent thought he knew about his family.
