Chapter 9: The Truth About Molly Harper
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The words Eleanor spoke remained in the air like smoke.
“Your father wasn’t trying to warn you about someone in this house.””
Vincent stared at her.
“He was trying to warn you about someone who was about to enter it.””
Molly felt every muscle in her body tighten.
Because she knew what Eleanor was doing.
The accusation was not direct.
It was worse.
It was carefully placed.
A suggestion.
A question planted in Vincent’s mind.
And Molly had seen enough of the world to know that suspicion could destroy people faster than proof.
Vincent looked at her.
Not with anger.
Not yet.
But with uncertainty.
That hurt more.
Because after everything that happened, after she had risked herself to save him, a small part of him was wondering if she had been part of the plan all along.
Molly stepped back.
“Is that what you believe?””
Vincent didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Her chest tightened.
She had expected danger from strangers.
She had expected trouble from powerful people.
She had not expected the worst moment to be standing in a room with the one person she saved.
Eleanor watched silently.
Too silently.
Molly looked at her.
“You wanted this.””
Eleanor’s expression stayed calm.
“I wanted the truth.””
“No.””
Molly shook her head.
“You wanted him to doubt me.””
Vincent looked between them.
“Enough.””
His voice was firm.
But Molly heard the conflict beneath it.
He didn’t know who to believe.
And that was exactly what Eleanor wanted.
Vincent turned toward the letter.
“My father knew about her?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
“What did he know?””
“I don’t know everything.””
Vincent laughed quietly.
“Convenient.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“Your version of it.””
Eleanor accepted the insult without reacting.
“Your father discovered records about Molly’s family.””
Molly froze.
“My family?””
Vincent looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor walked closer.
“Before Molly Harper came to work here, she spent years searching for answers about her parents.””
Molly’s face changed.
Because that was true.
But it was not something she had told anyone at Hale Manor.
“How do you know that?””
Eleanor did not answer.
And again, the silence spoke.
Vincent looked at Molly.
“You never mentioned that.””
“You never asked.””
The response came faster than she expected.
Vincent studied her.
“What answers were you looking for?””
Molly swallowed.
“My father died when I was young.””
Her voice softened.
“My mother disappeared before that.””
The room became quiet.
“I grew up hearing different stories. Different explanations. Nobody ever gave me the whole truth.””
Vincent looked at Eleanor.
“And you’re saying my father found something?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Eleanor looked at the letter.
“He found a connection.””
Molly felt cold.
“A connection between what?””
Eleanor finally looked at her.
“Your family.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Molly shook her head.
“No.””
She laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Eleanor reached into her purse.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Then handed it to Vincent.
He looked at it.
His expression changed.
Molly stepped closer.
The photograph showed a younger man.
Vincent’s father.
Standing beside another person.
A woman.
Molly recognized her immediately.
Her mother.
Her breath disappeared.
“No.””
She whispered it.
Again.
“No.””
Vincent looked at her.
“You know her?””
Molly couldn’t speak.
She reached for the photograph.
Her hands shook.
“That’s my mother.””
Nobody moved.
The room felt like it had become smaller.
Vincent stared at the photograph.
Then at Molly.
Then back at Eleanor.
“What are you saying?””
Eleanor answered quietly.
“I’m saying our families were connected long before you knew each other.””
Molly looked at Vincent.
“You knew?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
And this time, she believed him.
Because Vincent looked just as shocked as she felt.
“My father never told me.””
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
Molly looked at Eleanor.
“From what?””
Eleanor hesitated.
Then said:
“From the truth about what happened twelve years ago.””
Vincent stepped forward.
“What happened?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Your father discovered that someone close to him had been using both of your families for years.””
“Who?””
Eleanor’s eyes moved toward the doorway.
Toward the hallway.
Toward the rest of the mansion.
“I think you already know.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the sound of footsteps echoed.
Slow.
Heavy.
Everyone turned.
Chef Adrian stood in the doorway.
His face was pale.
“There’s something you need to see.””
Vincent looked at him.
“What?””
Adrian held a small device in his hand.
“The recording.””
Molly stared.
“I thought you destroyed it.””
“I destroyed the copy.””
His eyes moved toward Eleanor.
“But I kept the original.””
Vincent walked toward him.
“Play it.””
Adrian hesitated.
Then pressed the button.
A voice filled the room.
An old voice.
A familiar voice.
Vincent’s father.
“If you’re hearing this, something has happened to me.””
Vincent closed his eyes.
The voice continued.
“And if Molly Harper is standing beside you…”
Molly stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“Then I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“Trust her.””
Vincent opened his eyes.
Everyone froze.
The exact opposite of Eleanor’s warning.
The exact opposite of the suspicion planted in the room.
His father’s voice continued:
“She is the only person who doesn’t know the game being played around her.””
Molly felt tears form before she understood why.
Because for the first time in years, someone had believed her without needing proof.
The recording ended with one final sentence.
“Vincent, the person who tries to separate you from Molly is the person you should fear.””
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Then Vincent slowly turned toward Eleanor.
And Eleanor’s expression finally changed.
May you like
Because she knew.
The truth was no longer hidden.
