Chapter 4: The Family Secret
Vincent did not look at Eleanor immediately.
That surprised everyone.
Molly included.
Because every person in the room expected an explosion.
A confrontation.
A dramatic accusation.
But Vincent Hale did not move like someone who was shocked.
He moved like someone putting pieces together.
That was what made him frightening.
He walked slowly around the table, looking at every person seated there.
His friends.
His business partners.
His family.
People who had eaten in his home.
People who had smiled at him.
People who had raised glasses in celebration of his success.
And now one of them might have been the reason he almost never took another breath.
“Adrian,” Vincent said.
The chef looked up.
“Tell me the name.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I can’t.””
Vincent stopped.
“You’re still protecting them.””
“No.””
“Then what are you protecting?””
Adrian opened his eyes.
“My life.””
The answer hung in the room.
Molly felt her stomach tighten.
This was no longer about one plate.
No longer about one meal.
Someone had created a situation where even the person who knew the truth was afraid to speak.
Vincent leaned against the table.
“Why would someone threaten you?””
Adrian laughed quietly.
A tired, bitter sound.
“Because people like your family don’t make requests.””
Nobody responded.
“They make expectations.””
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“Be careful.””
Adrian looked at her.
And Molly noticed something.
The chef was afraid of Eleanor.
But he was also angry.
That was new.
Fear could keep someone silent.
But anger could make them reckless.
Vincent noticed the same thing.
“Adrian.””
The chef looked at him.
“Start at the beginning.””
For several seconds, Adrian said nothing.
Then he looked at Molly.
“I should have listened to you.””
Molly frowned.
“What?””
“I should have known someone would notice.””
Vincent looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Molly was the only person in this house who didn’t know enough to be scared.””
The words surprised her.
Because she understood exactly what he meant.
Everyone else in that mansion had history.
Connections.
Secrets.
Reasons to stay quiet.
Molly was different.
She was just someone trying to do her job.
Vincent looked at her.
“Why were you in the kitchen?””
Molly answered honestly.
“I was delivering dessert.””
“And you saw Adrian switch the plate?””
“Yes.””
“Did you see who ordered him?””
“No.””
Vincent nodded.
Then he turned back to Adrian.
“So you’re saying someone told you to poison me.””
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“No.””
That answer confused everyone.
Vincent narrowed his eyes.
“Explain.””
“I said someone told me to change the plate.””
The chef looked toward the untouched dish.
“I didn’t know what was in it.””
A silence followed.
Molly felt cold.
Because that meant Adrian could be telling the truth.
He might not have known.
He might have only been a piece in a larger plan.
“Who told you?”” Vincent asked again.
Adrian looked away.
“I received instructions.””
“From who?””
“I never saw their face.””
The room erupted.
“What?””
“You expect us to believe that?””
“Impossible.””
Vincent raised a hand.
The room immediately quieted.
“How?””
Adrian hesitated.
“A message.””
Molly noticed Vincent’s expression change.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“What kind of message?””
Adrian looked at him.
“A warning.””
“About what?””
The chef’s voice lowered.
“About your father.””
The entire room went silent.
Molly looked at Vincent.
For the first time since she had met him, she saw something break through his control.
Pain.
Just for a moment.
Then it disappeared.
“My father died twelve years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then explain why someone is using his name.””
Adrian looked down.
“Because someone believes you found out what really happened.””
Nobody spoke.
Molly felt the air leave the room.
She knew Vincent Hale was wealthy.
She knew he was powerful.
But she had not known his family carried something this heavy.
A death.
A secret.
A mystery buried for over a decade.
Eleanor slowly sat back down.
“You’re listening to a frightened chef.””
Vincent looked at her.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did your expression change when he mentioned my father?””
For the first time, Eleanor had no immediate answer.
Molly watched the silence.
Watched the woman who seemed impossible to shake.
And she understood something.
The poison was never the real weapon.
The real weapon was the secret behind it.
Vincent walked toward the dining room doors.
“Lock the house down.””
The guards moved.
Molly looked at him.
“What are you going to do?””
Vincent stopped.
He looked back at her.
And something about the question seemed to remind him that she was still there.
The waitress who had grabbed his wrist.
The stranger who had risked herself.
The person who had unknowingly opened a door nobody wanted opened.
“I’m going to find out who tried to kill me.””
He looked toward Eleanor.
“And why they’re using my father’s death to do it.””
The mansion doors closed.
The sound echoed through the room.

And somewhere inside Hale Manor, someone realized Vincent Hale was no longer searching for the person who poisoned his dinner.
He was searching for the person who had been lying to him for twelve years.
