Chapter 13: The Truth Written in My Name

The page trembled in my hands.

Not because I was afraid of the paper.

Because I was afraid of what it meant.

My name was written at the top.

Maya Collins.

Underneath it was a date.

A date from eighteen years ago.

The year I was three years old.

The year my mother disappeared.

My father stepped closer.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes moved down the page.

The words blurred.

Then sharpened.

A legal statement.

A declaration.

A document saying that if anything happened to Claire, I would inherit everything she had protected.

Everything she had hidden.

Everything she had fought to keep safe.

But there was one sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Why would my name be on this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Claire.

She looked devastated.

Not surprised.

Devastated.

“You knew?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

My father looked at her.

“You knew?””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No. Not everything.””

She stepped closer.

“Maya, listen to me.””

I looked away.

Because I wasn’t sure if I could.

For eighteen years, I wanted my mother back.

I imagined this moment.

I imagined running into her arms.

I imagined everything becoming perfect.

But nobody warned me that getting the truth could hurt just as much as losing someone.

“What does it mean?”” I asked.

Claire took a breath.

“When I realized someone was following me, I knew I needed to protect you.””

“From Vanessa?””

Claire looked down.

“From everyone.””

That answer confused me.

“Everyone?””

Robert spoke quietly.

“There were people involved who wanted access to your mother’s assets.””

My father looked at him.

“What assets?””

Claire looked at the document.

“The company.””

Marcus froze.

“What company?””

I looked between them.

Nobody had ever mentioned a company.

Claire swallowed.

“The company my father left me.””

My grandmother looked shocked.

“Your inheritance?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Robert explained.

“Before the accident, Claire discovered money was being moved from the company accounts.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“And you were involved.””

Vanessa said nothing.

The silence was enough.

I stared at her.

“All this…”

My voice cracked.

“All this happened because of money?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“It wasn’t that simple.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It was.””

She looked hurt.

But I couldn’t stop.

“You lied.””

My voice grew stronger.

“You let me believe my mother died.””

She looked down.

“I raised you.””

“And she lost eighteen years.””

The room went quiet.

Claire wiped her tears.

“I never wanted Maya involved.””

I looked at her.

“But I was.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The pain in her voice made me stop.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was accepting it.

“I missed everything.””

Her voice broke.

“Your first day of school. Your first dance. Your graduation.””

She looked around the room.

“I missed today.””

I swallowed hard.

“You were there.””

She smiled sadly.

“I was.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She nodded.

“I watched from the street.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t know if I was allowed to walk into your life.””

The answer shattered something inside me.

Because suddenly, I saw it.

She wasn’t a mother who abandoned me.

She was a mother who had been standing outside the door, waiting.

My grandmother came beside her.

“She waited years.””

I looked at Claire.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked away.

Robert placed another paper on the table.

“This is the evidence that matters most.””

My father picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

“A recording agreement.””

Marcus frowned.

“Recording?””

Robert nodded.

“Claire recorded a conversation before the accident.””

Everyone went still.

“With who?”” Grandma asked.

Robert looked at Vanessa.

“With her.””

My father turned.

Vanessa’s face lost all color.

“No.””

Claire whispered:

“She knows.””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared.

“You recorded her?””

Claire looked down.

“I was scared.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I tried.””

The pain in his face returned.

“Claire…”

“I left a copy.””

She looked at the document.

“But it disappeared.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Enough.””

Her voice was sharp.

Everyone looked at her.

She looked different.

No tears.

No fear.

Only anger.

“You all think I’m the only person who made mistakes?””

Marcus stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa laughed.

“You want the truth?””

She looked at Claire.

“You weren’t innocent.””

The room froze.

Claire’s face changed.

“What?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You never told them everything.””

My father looked confused.

“Everything about what?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

Because for the first time…

my mother looked afraid of the truth too.

Vanessa smiled.

“Tell them.””

Claire whispered:

“No.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Tell us what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Ask your mother why she really disappeared.””

The words hung in the air.

My heart pounded.

I looked at Claire.

And the woman I had spent eighteen years searching for slowly lowered her eyes.

Because she knew.

May you like

There was another secret.

One she had never told me.
