Chapter 6: The Woman at the Gate
Nobody moved.
The world felt strangely quiet.
The guests.
The music.
The laughter from nearby houses.
Everything disappeared.
There was only the woman standing at the gate.
My mother.
I knew it.
Even before she stepped into the light.
Even before I saw her face clearly.
Somewhere deep inside me, a part of me recognized her.
A part of me that had been waiting for eighteen years.
Grandma covered her mouth.
“Claire…”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mama.””
That single word broke something open.
Grandma ran.
Not quickly.
She was in her seventies, carrying years of pain in her bones.
But she ran anyway.
They met halfway.
And when they hugged, it looked like two people holding onto something they thought they lost forever.
I stood frozen.
Watching.
Trying to understand.
My mother was alive.
Alive.
The impossible had a face.
A voice.
A heartbeat.
Marcus stepped forward slowly.
He looked like he was afraid to move too fast.
Like she might disappear.
“Claire?””
She looked at him.
The expression on her face was heartbreaking.
“Hi, Marcus.””
He laughed softly.
A broken sound.
Then he covered his face.
“I don’t understand.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I need you to understand. I woke up every day thinking you were gone.””
Claire looked down.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
She looked toward Vanessa.
And everyone followed her eyes.
Vanessa stood near the table.
Still holding the phone.
Still holding onto the last piece of control she had.
“You came here,” Vanessa whispered.
Claire’s expression hardened.
“I had to.””
“You promised.””
The words shocked everyone.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa immediately looked away.
Claire stepped closer.
“You told me if I stayed away, you would protect Maya.””
My stomach dropped.
Protect me?
From what?
Marcus stared.
“Protect her from what?””
Nobody answered.
The question stayed hanging.
Vanessa’s face changed.
The fear returned.
“Maya, don’t listen to her.””
My mother looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted answers.
But eighteen years of missing someone doesn’t disappear in a second.
It turns into something heavier.
Something complicated.
“Why did you let me think you were dead?””
The question came out quietly.
Claire looked like I had hit her.
“I tried to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked at Vanessa.
I followed her eyes.
And suddenly, I hated that I already knew the answer.
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Because Vanessa convinced everyone I was dangerous.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
“She told people I was unstable.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
Claire continued.
“She told your family I had disappeared by choice.””
Grandma’s face hardened.
“You told us she left?””
Vanessa said nothing.
My mother looked at me.
“She told me if I came near you, she would make sure you never saw me again.””
I felt sick.
My father looked at Vanessa like he didn’t recognize her.
“Why?””
The question was simple.
But nobody had an easy answer.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t know what I sacrificed.””
Marcus stepped back.
“Sacrificed?””
“Yes.””
Her voice rose.
“I gave this family everything.””
Claire shook her head.
“You gave yourself power.””
The guests began whispering again.
But I didn’t hear them.
I only heard my mother.
The woman I had spent my entire life mourning.
The woman standing in front of me.
I stepped closer.
“Did you really survive the accident?””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then why were there police reports?””
Her expression changed.
Pain.
Fear.
Regret.
“Because the accident wasn’t what you were told.””
Marcus went still.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
“It means someone changed the story.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the table.
Toward the papers.
Toward the evidence.
My mother saw it.
“Maya!””
I reacted quickly.
I grabbed the envelope.
Vanessa stopped.
Her face twisted.
“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””
I held it tighter.
“Maybe.””
I looked at my mother.
“But I know who I’m protecting it from.””
For the first time, Vanessa had nothing to say.
Then Claire reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
My father stared.
“What is that?””
Claire looked at me.
“It’s the last thing I kept before I disappeared.””
She unfolded it.
My name was written on the front.
Maya.
My heartbeat stopped.
Because underneath my name were five words.
May you like
Five words that made Vanessa take a step back.
“Your father was not the target.””
