Chapter 14: The Choice My Mother Made

Nobody spoke.

The accusation sat between us.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

I looked at Claire.

The woman I had dreamed about meeting.

The woman I had defended.

The woman I had just started believing.

And now I wondered.

What else didn’t I know?

“Maya…”

My mother’s voice was quiet.

I shook my head.

“Tell me.””

She closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

“I was afraid you would hate me.””

The words hurt more than any confession.

“Why?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Because I made a choice.””

My father stepped forward.

“What choice?””

Claire took a breath.

“When I found the missing money, I also found something else.””

Robert lowered his eyes.

He knew.

“What?””

Claire looked at Marcus.

“I found out Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

The room froze.

My father stared.

“Who else?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“Someone in your family.””

Everyone reacted at once.

Grandma frowned.

“What?””

Marcus looked shocked.

“No.””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You see?””

Everyone looked at her.

“She always leaves out the important parts.””

Claire looked hurt.

“I was trying to protect Maya.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

My father stepped between them.

“Enough.””

His voice was firm.

“Claire, I need the truth.””

She looked at him.

“I know.””

A long pause.

Then she said:

“Before the accident, I discovered that someone was using my company to move money.””

Marcus nodded.

“The transfers.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“She wasn’t just taking money.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What was she doing?””

Claire whispered:

“She was building a case.””

“A case?””

“To make me look unstable.””

The room went silent.

“She collected arguments. Messages. Fake reports.””

My father looked sick.

“So people would believe you were dangerous.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Grandma looked at Vanessa.

“How could you?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what I was trying to prevent.””

Robert spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You were trying to prevent Claire from exposing you.””

Vanessa glared.

“You don’t know anything.””

“I know enough.””

He looked at me.

“The recording proves it.””

My hands tightened.

“The recording?””

Robert nodded.

“It was hidden.””

“Where?””

Claire looked at me.

“Inside the old photograph.””

My heart stopped.

“The one I found the envelope behind?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I couldn’t believe it.

My mother had hidden the truth inside the one thing Vanessa told me not to touch.

My father looked at Claire.

“You planned for Maya to find it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Because I knew one day she would ask questions.””

She looked at me.

“And I wanted her to have answers.””

I looked down.

The anger inside me mixed with something else.

Pain.

Love.

Confusion.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She still doesn’t know the worst part.””

My father turned.

“What now?””

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“Tell her.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“Maya…”

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?””

Claire sat down.

Her hands shook.

“When the accident happened…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“Your father was in the car.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Claire nodded.

“You don’t remember because you were unconscious.””

My father stared.

“I was there?””

“Yes.””

The room spun.

“Then why did everyone think you died?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“Because Vanessa told people Marcus was the only survivor.””

My father stepped back.

“But I don’t remember.””

“You had a head injury.””

Robert added:

“The records were changed.””

Marcus looked broken.

“I was there.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

My father covered his face.

“I could have saved you.””

“No.””

Claire moved toward him.

“No, Marcus.””

She held his hand.

“You couldn’t.””

The moment was heartbreaking.

Because after eighteen years, they were finally touching again.

But the past was still standing between them.

Then Daniel’s old folder fell from the table.

A small recording device slipped out.

Everyone stared.

Robert picked it up.

“This is it.””

My heart started racing.

“The recording.””

Vanessa moved instantly.

“No.””

Marcus caught her.

This time, she didn’t fight.

She just looked defeated.

Robert pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Vanessa’s voice.

Eighteen years younger.

“I can fix this.””

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

Claire’s voice answered:

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Vanessa replied:

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“I understand exactly.””

My blood turned cold.

Because then Vanessa said the words that finally revealed everything.

“I don’t need you gone forever.””

May you like

The room went silent.

“I just need Maya to forget you.””
