Chapter 5: The Voice Behind the Silence

Nobody breathed.

The phone rang again.

Claire.

My mother’s name glowing on Vanessa’s screen.

I stared at it until my eyes hurt.

Maybe my brain was protecting me.

Maybe I was seeing something impossible because I wanted it to be true.

But the name stayed there.

Claire.

My father stepped forward.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

“Answer it.””

His voice was different now.

Cold.

Firm.

The kind of voice I had never heard from him.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

Marcus laughed once.

A broken laugh.

“That’s all I’ve heard today.””

The phone stopped.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then it rang again.

Grandma whispered:

“She’s trying to reach us.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

Too immediately.

Grandma’s eyes narrowed.

“You know where she is.””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

That was the answer.

My hands tightened around the letter.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His face collapsed.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I wiped my tears before they fell.

“Why didn’t you tell me there was even a possibility?””

He looked toward the ground.

“I thought she was gone.””

“You thought?””

The pain in my voice made him flinch.

“I was three years old.””

I pointed at the papers.

“But someone knew.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa finally reached for her phone again.

This time, Marcus stopped her.

“Put it on speaker.””

She stared at him.

“No.””

“Why?””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

He took the phone from her hand.

She grabbed his wrist.

“Marcus, don’t.””

The fear in her voice was undeniable.

He looked at her.

“What are you afraid she’ll say?””

Vanessa let go.

Slowly.

Marcus answered the call.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then a woman’s voice.

A woman’s breathing.

I felt my knees weaken.

Because even after all these years, I knew that voice.

Not from memories.

From recordings.

Old videos.

The few moments Vanessa had allowed me to keep.

“Hello?””

My father covered his mouth.

Grandma grabbed the table for support.

I couldn’t move.

The voice continued.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The woman on the phone spoke again.

“I know you found the letter.””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother said:

“Is Maya there?””

My entire world stopped.

I stepped closer.

The phone was only a few feet away.

But it felt like there was an ocean between us.

“Mom?””

The word barely escaped.

The voice went silent.

Then a shaky breath.

“Maya?””

I covered my mouth.

I couldn’t speak.

My grandmother started crying.

Not quietly.

Not the kind of tears she tried to hide.

The kind that came from years of waiting.

Years of pain.

“Maya,” my mother whispered.

“I’m so sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I had imagined this moment my entire life.

But never like this.

Never with my mother’s voice coming through a phone while the woman who hid her stood ten feet away.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

A sharp movement.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

My mother heard.

“Is Vanessa there?””

Nobody answered.

Then Claire said something that made my blood run cold.

“She wasn’t supposed to be near that letter yet.””

Grandma looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

The phone was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then my mother spoke.

“Maya, listen carefully.””

I held my breath.

“Do not let Vanessa take anything else.””

My father stared at Vanessa.

“What else?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Marcus…”

My father stepped closer to the phone.

“Yes.””

A long pause.

Then:

“I need you to know I never left you.””

His face broke.

A tear slipped down.

And suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t just about me.

This was about two people who had lost each other.

Two people who had been separated by a lie.

“Claire,” Marcus whispered.

“I looked for you.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you come back?””

The silence that followed was painful.

Then my mother answered.

“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“No.””

My father stared at her.

“Who?””

The phone went silent.

My mother’s breathing changed.

Like she was scared.

Then she said:

“I can’t say it over the phone.””

Vanessa moved suddenly.

She grabbed the phone.

The call ended.

“Maya!””

I watched her standing there, holding the phone tightly.

But she wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at the doorway behind us.

At someone outside the party.

Someone who had arrived without anyone noticing.

Grandma followed her gaze.

Then whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I turned around.

And saw a shadow standing beyond the gate.

A woman.

May you like

Watching us.

A woman who looked exactly like the face in the photograph.
