The Letter That Knew His Name / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Memory Hidden In The Dark

I spent twenty years believing my mind failed me.

That the accident took something from me.

A piece of my life.

A piece of myself.

But the truth was worse.

Someone took it.

The question was who.

The emergency lights continued glowing red above us.

The diner looked different under that light.

The same booths.

The same tables.

The same walls.

But it no longer felt like a safe place.

It felt like a crime scene.

I looked at Daniel.

“Start from the beginning.””

He nodded slowly.

“The night Ethan was born, your sister called you.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she needed help.””

“With what?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“With protecting him.””

Ethan looked confused.

“My mom knew Bear?””

“Yes.””

The boy looked at me.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””

I almost laughed.

“Nothing about this is normal.””

“No.””

Daniel agreed.

“It wasn’t.””

He walked toward the empty table.

“That night, your sister discovered someone was trying to take Ethan away.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the man at the door.

The man said nothing.

That was enough.

I turned.

“You.””

The man’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m done not understanding.””

The man looked at me.

“Your sister was reckless.””

Daniel snapped.

“Don’t.””

“She believed she could expose people who were bigger than her.””

“Because she was right,” Daniel said.

The man ignored him.

“She asked you to help.””

My eyes narrowed.

“She asked me?””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Trying to force the memory.

Trying to find something.

Anything.

Then it came.

A voice.

My sister’s voice.

“Bear, promise me.””

A flash.

Rain.

A car.

A hospital bracelet.

A tiny baby crying.

I grabbed the table.

Daniel immediately moved.

“What did you see?””

I looked at him.

“She gave me Ethan.””

Nobody spoke.

Ethan stared.

“She did what?””

I closed my eyes.

More pieces came.

My sister standing beside a car.

Her face covered in tears.

“You’re the only person I trust.””

My own voice.

“You know I’ll protect him.””

Another flash.

A man approaching.

A struggle.

A sound.

A fall.

Then darkness.

I opened my eyes.

“I remember.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

“I remember the promise.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What promise?””

I looked at him.

“The promise I made your mother.””

The boy waited.

I swallowed.

“I promised I would find you.””

His face broke.

“But you didn’t.””

The words hurt because they were true.

“I’m sorry.””

A child should never have to forgive adults for failing them.

But Ethan looked at me differently.

Not like a hero.

Like a person.

“I think she knew you would.””

I looked away.

Because that hurt more.

The man near the door spoke.

“Now you understand why she hid.””

I turned.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“No?””

“She didn’t hide because of me.””

My voice became harder.

“She hid because people like you made her afraid.””

The man’s face changed.

For the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

“You have no idea what she caused.””

I stepped forward.

“And you have no idea what I’ll do if you hurt him.””

The man smiled.

“There he is.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The man your sister believed was still inside you.””

Before I could answer, Vanessa suddenly gasped.

Everyone turned.

She was staring at the window.

“What?””

She pointed.

Outside.

A person stood in the parking lot.

Watching.

Not hiding.

Not running.

A woman.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

Ethan saw her.

And dropped the chair behind him.

“Mom?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because standing outside the diner was the woman we had spent hours talking about.

The woman everyone believed was gone.

My sister.

She looked through the window.

Straight at me.

Then she mouthed three words.

*Don’t trust him.*

And she pointed behind me.

I turned.

May you like

Too late.

Because someone inside the diner had already pulled a weapon.
