Chapter 3: The Name From Before

Vanessa didn’t answer the phone.

She just stared at it.

The ringing echoed through the diner.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Everyone watched her.

Finally, I spoke.

“Pick it up.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“I’m getting tired of hearing that.””

Her hand trembled as she grabbed the phone.

The screen was still visible from where I stood.

The caller’s name was there.

Daniel.

My stomach tightened.

Not because I knew the man.

Because I knew the name.

Daniel was the name of my closest friend before my life changed.

The man who vanished after my sister’s death.

The man everyone said was gone forever.

Vanessa answered.

“Hello?””

No one could hear the voice on the other side.

But whatever was said made her face lose all expression.

She slowly turned toward Ethan.

Then toward me.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“No. You said you wouldn’t come near him.””

Another pause.

Her eyes widened.

“Because he can’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“Know what?””

Vanessa ended the call.

Too late.

I had heard enough.

Ethan looked between us.

“Who was that?””

Nobody answered.

I watched Vanessa carefully.

A person’s eyes reveal things their mouth refuses to say.

Hers were screaming.

I placed the envelope on the table.

“Start talking.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t want the truth.””

“That’s my decision.””

She looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“Your mother wasn’t running from you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She was trying to protect you.””

Ethan’s eyes filled with confusion.

“My mom knew him?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence told me more than words could.

I walked toward her.

“Who was Ethan’s mother?””

She looked away.

“Bear…”

“Who was she?””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“Someone who loved you.””

The diner seemed to stop moving.

I heard the refrigerator humming.

A fork dropping somewhere behind the counter.

My own heartbeat.

But before I could ask another question, Ethan spoke.

“She said you promised her something.””

I looked at him.

“What promise?””

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a second piece of paper.

Smaller.

Older.

Folded into a tiny square.

“I wasn’t supposed to show anyone.””

My eyes moved from the paper to Vanessa.

Her face turned pale.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Not a warning.

A panic.

I took the paper from Ethan.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Bear, don’t.””

I unfolded it.

There was only one sentence written inside.

My hands went still.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

I had seen it every day for years.

On birthday cards.

On notes left beside coffee cups.

On letters I thought I would never see again.

My breath caught.

The handwriting belonged to the woman everyone told me was dead.

And beneath the sentence was a name.

A name that made Vanessa cover her mouth in horror.

Then the diner door opened behind us.

A shadow filled the entrance.

A man’s voice came from the doorway.

“Bear Cole.””

I turned.

The man standing there looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

And when Ethan saw him…

May you like

He whispered one word.

“Dad?””
