Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Camera
The photograph was still on my phone.
My own face stared back at me.
A frozen moment.
Me holding the letter.
Ethan beside me.
Daniel behind me.
Vanessa near the counter.
Someone had taken that picture from inside the diner.
Not from across the street.
Not from a distance.
Inside.
My eyes moved slowly around the room.
Every corner.
Every shadow.
Every reflection.
Someone was here.
Watching.
Waiting.
The man in the doorway noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“Someone sent me a picture.””
His face changed.
“From where?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew.
I looked toward the ceiling.
Security cameras.
The man followed my eyes.
Then smiled.
“They’re closer than you think.””
Daniel immediately turned.
“Everybody move away from the windows.””
Nobody questioned him.
That bothered me.
Because Daniel had spent twenty years lying.
But he also knew exactly how dangerous this was.
I grabbed his arm.
“You’re going to explain everything.””
He looked at me.
“I will.””
“Now.””
His jaw tightened.
“Not here.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
For a moment, the old Daniel appeared.
The friend I remembered.
The man who would have argued with me.
Then it disappeared.
“You really don’t remember.””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked at me with sadness.
“You used to say the same thing.””
“Say what?””
“Before the accident.””
I stared.
“Before?””
Daniel nodded.
“You weren’t trying to find the truth.””
My voice lowered.
“What was I trying to do?””
He looked at Ethan.
“Protect him.””
The answer confused me.
“Protect Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“But I didn’t know Ethan.””
Daniel looked away.
“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””
My heart started pounding.
The pieces were moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
But they were moving.
I looked at Ethan.
“Come here.””
He walked over.
I crouched.
“Your mom…”
I stopped.
How do you explain something impossible to a child?
How do you tell him his entire life was built on secrets?
“How long did she know me?””
Ethan thought.
“She said you saved us.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
He looked down.
“Before I was born.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa suddenly sat down.
Like her legs couldn’t hold her anymore.
“I should have told you.””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
No excuses.
No fighting.
Just regret.
She looked at Ethan.
“I met your mother when she was already hiding.””
“From who?”” Ethan asked.
Vanessa looked at the man near the door.
“From him.””
The man’s expression darkened.
“I’m not the villain you think I am.””
I turned.
“That’s what villains say.””
He almost smiled.
“Maybe.””
Then he looked at Ethan.
“But I was the only one trying to keep him alive.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“By destroying everyone around him?””
The man looked at Daniel.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
The tension became unbearable.
Then the diner lights went out.
Darkness.
A second of complete silence.
Then Ethan screamed.
I moved instantly.
My hand found him.
“I’m here.””
The emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Everyone was still there.
Except one thing.
The envelope.
The first letter.
Gone.
My blood ran cold.
I looked at the table.
Empty.
The man near the door stared.
Daniel cursed under his breath.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Ethan looked at me.
“Bear…”
I looked around.
Someone had taken the letter.
Someone inside the diner.
The man in the doorway spoke quietly.
“They were never after Ethan.””
I looked at him.
“They wanted that letter.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
He stared at the empty table.
“They wanted what was written on the back.””
I looked down.
“The back?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Bear…”
“What?””
He swallowed.
“The letter wasn’t just from your sister.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then who was it from?””
Daniel looked toward the front door.
Too late.
Because taped to the glass was a new piece of paper.
Fresh.
Waiting.
My name written across it.
I walked closer.
Slowly.
And when I saw the handwriting…
I stopped.
Because it wasn’t my sister’s.
It was mine.
