Chapter 6: The Secret In His Pocket

The diner door opened halfway.

A hand appeared on the handle.

Then stopped.

Whoever was outside was waiting.

Listening.

Testing.

I moved Ethan behind me.

Daniel stepped beside me.

For the first time in twenty years, we stood shoulder to shoulder again.

It felt familiar.

And wrong.

Because I didn’t know if I could trust him.

“You still fight the same way,” Daniel whispered.

I didn’t look at him.

“You still disappear the same way.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

The door opened completely.

But nobody entered.

Instead, a voice came from outside.

“Bear Cole.””

I stared at the doorway.

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

A person who wasn’t afraid.

“Show yourself,” I called.

A man stepped into view.

Black suit.

Gray hair.

Cold expression.

He looked around the diner like he owned it.

Then his eyes landed on Ethan.

“There he is.””

Ethan grabbed my vest.

I felt him shaking.

I looked at the man.

“You know him?””

The man smiled slightly.

“I know everyone involved.””

Vanessa moved backward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man glanced at her.

“You had one job.””

Her face changed.

“I made a choice.””

“No,” he replied.

“You made a mistake.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

“Someone who remembers who you used to be.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He smiled.

“Still impatient.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Leave.””

The man laughed softly.

“Daniel Cross giving orders?””

His eyes moved between us.

“This is almost emotional.””

I noticed something.

Daniel was afraid.

Not of the man.

Of what he represented.

I lowered my voice.

“Who is he?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“The reason your sister disappeared.””

The man heard him.

And smiled.

“Careful, Daniel.””

My fists tightened.

“You have five seconds.””

The man tilted his head.

“Or what?””

The old Bear came back.

The one who survived highways, fights, and impossible situations.

“The kind of mistake people make once.””

The man studied me.

Then looked at Ethan.

“He has no idea, does he?””

I stepped in front of Ethan.

“Stop talking about him like he’s not standing here.””

The man’s expression changed slightly.

Almost impressed.

“Your sister was right about you.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew her?””

“I knew her very well.””

The diner became silent.

The man reached inside his coat.

Everyone reacted.

But he only pulled out a photograph.

He placed it on the nearest table.

I looked down.

The picture was old.

My sister.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

And a baby.

A baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

Ethan.

My breathing slowed.

The man looked at me.

“Now you understand.””

“No.””

I picked up the photo.

“No, I don’t.””

Daniel looked at it.

His face broke.

The man smiled.

“The boy was never the secret.””

I looked up.

“Then what was?””

The man pointed at the envelope.

“You.””

Before I could respond, Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Bear.””

I turned.

The boy was crying.

He was holding something.

Another envelope.

Small.

Folded.

Hidden inside his hoodie.

My stomach dropped.

“Where did you get that?””

Ethan looked scared.

“My mom gave it to me.””

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

The man at the door stopped smiling.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

I slowly walked toward Ethan.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?””

The boy wiped his face.

“She said I should only give it to you if the first letter found you.””

The room went completely still.

The second letter.

The one my sister warned me about.

I reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the paper, the man spoke.

“Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His voice was different now.

Not threatening.

Desperate.

“Because once you open that one…”

He paused.

“…you’ll know why your sister chose to disappear.””

My hand froze.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered:

“Bear…”

I looked at the letter.

Twenty years of unanswered questions.

Two envelopes.

One truth.

And a decision that could change everything.

Then Ethan looked at me and said the one thing I never expected.

“Mom said you weren’t supposed to forgive her.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she knew what she did.””

I turned back toward the letter.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I was afraid to open something.
