Chapter 1: “Why Isn’t My Daughter Eating?”

“Why isn’t Lily eating?””

Darius’s voice cut through the bright kitchen so sharply that even the silverware seemed to stop moving. He stood in the doorway, still wearing his dark work clothes, his broad shoulders filling the frame as sunlight poured through the enormous windows.

At the sink, his seven-year-old daughter was crying over a mountain of dirty dishes.

At the dining table, his wife, Vanessa, was cutting into a juicy steak while her ten-year-old son, Jordan, ate comfortably beside her. A half-eaten slice of chocolate cake sat on Jordan’s plate. Another waited in front of Vanessa.

Lily had nothing.

Her small pink shirt was soaked at the front. Her fingers trembled around a greasy plate, and tears slid down her cheeks as she scrubbed harder.

Vanessa didn't even look up.

“She needs to learn she isn’t equal to my son,” she replied, lifting another bite of steak to her mouth.

Darius stared at her.

For three years, he'd believed Vanessa was the woman who could help him raise Lily after his first wife died. He'd believed her when she promised to love his daughter as her own. He'd believed the family dinners, the birthday photographs, and the sweet little notes Vanessa sometimes left in Lily's lunchbox.

Now, standing beneath the bright kitchen lights, he watched his child struggle to wash dishes while two people ate in front of her.

“Vanessa,” Darius said slowly, “what did you just say?””

Vanessa dabbed her mouth with a napkin.

“You heard me, Darius. Jordan is my son. He needs proper meals, attention, and a stable home. Lily needs to understand that she can't expect everything to revolve around her.””

Jordan glanced at his stepsister, then speared another piece of steak.

“Mom said Lily has to earn dessert,” he added casually.

“She hasn't finished her chores.””

Lily's shoulders shook.

“I already washed the breakfast dishes,” she whispered.

Vanessa finally turned toward her.

“And now you're talking back? Keep scrubbing.””

Lily flinched so hard that the plate slipped in her wet hands.

It struck the edge of the sink with a sharp crack.

Darius moved immediately.

“That's enough.””

He crossed the kitchen in three long strides. Vanessa reached for her water glass, behaving as if he had merely interrupted an ordinary conversation.

But Darius saw the details he'd missed before.

The tiny red marks around Lily's wrists.

The dish towel hanging from her shoulder like she'd been working for hours.

The untouched glass of milk beside the sink.

And the way his daughter kept looking at Vanessa before daring to look at him.

He took the plate from Lily's hands.

“You're done,” he told her gently.

“Come here, baby.””

Lily turned toward him, trying to wipe her tears with the back of her hand.

“Daddy, I'm sorry.””

His expression broke for a fraction of a second.

“Sorry for what?””

“For making her mad.””

Darius crouched in front of her.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to apologize for being a child.””

Lily's lips trembled. She glanced toward Vanessa, who had now set down her fork.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered, “I need to show you something.””

Before Darius could ask what she meant, Lily slipped her small hand into the pocket of her pink shirt.

She pulled out a little digital recorder.

Darius frowned.

“Where did you get this?””

Lily pressed it into his palm.

“Please listen before she makes me put it away.””

Across the kitchen, Vanessa went perfectly still.

Her fork hovered above her plate.

For the first time since Darius had walked through the door, she looked genuinely frightened.

“Lily,” Vanessa said, forcing a smile that didn't reach her eyes, “give your father whatever that is. You know children shouldn't play with things they don't understand.””

Lily immediately moved closer to Darius.

“Daddy, I didn't make it up.””

“I didn't say you did, baby.””

Darius looked down at the recorder. A small red indicator light blinked against its plastic casing.

Then he looked at his wife.

“Why are you so worried about a recorder?””

Vanessa pushed her chair back.

“Because this is ridiculous. I have dinner to finish, and I'm not going to stand here while a seven-year-old tries to turn this family against me.””

Darius pressed PLAY.

A faint click came from the device.

Then Vanessa's voice filled the kitchen.

“Make her feel unwanted.””

Darius stopped breathing for a moment.

The voice was unmistakable.

It was the same voice that had told him she loved Lily. The same voice that had kissed his cheek that morning and reminded him to sign some paperwork he'd left on his desk.

The recording continued.

“Her father will sign anything once she begs him to keep her.””

Vanessa's fork slipped from her fingers and clattered against the plate.

Jordan stared at his mother.

Darius slowly lifted his eyes.

“What's this about?””

Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the tile.

“Turn that thing off.””

Darius tightened his grip on the recorder.

“Not until I understand what I'm hearing.””

The device crackled softly.

Another sentence began.

“Once he signs those papers, he won't know what he gave me.””

Darius froze.

Then, without looking away from Vanessa, he asked the only question that mattered.

“What papers?””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

May you like

Lily clutched the back of her father's shirt.

And the recorder kept playing.
