Chapter 4: The Name on the Final Page

“The beneficiary listed on the final page is Jordan Cole.””

For three seconds, Darius couldn't speak.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, her beige blouse immaculate, her hands clenched so tightly that her fingernails pressed into her palms. Behind Darius, Lily gripped the back of his shirt, listening to every word.

“Jordan?”” Darius repeated.

“Yes,” attorney Marcus Reed answered through the phone.

“Your wife's son. The documents appear to direct substantial assets into a structure that would benefit him. However, I need to review the complete file before I can confirm the legal effect of every provision.””

Darius looked at Vanessa.

“Why is your son listed as the beneficiary of my assets?””

Vanessa took a step forward.

“Because Jordan is part of this family.””

“So is Lily.””

“I never said she wasn't.””

“You didn't have to. You've been showing her exactly where she stands.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Don't you dare turn this into a competition between children. Jordan has a future to think about, too.””

Darius raised the phone again.

“Marcus, did I sign these documents?””

“The file contains signatures bearing your name. I can't tell you whether you personally authorized every provision without examining the circumstances and original records.””

“Did you witness me signing anything?””

“No.””

“Did you speak to me directly about the beneficiary arrangement?””

Another pause.

“No, Mr. Cole. All my instructions came through your wife.””

Darius stared at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“That's not true. I told him everything.””

Marcus interrupted before Darius could respond.

“Mr. Cole, I recommend that you preserve all the documents and avoid signing anything further until you've obtained independent legal advice. I'll send you copies of the complete file.””

“Send them directly to me,” Darius said.

“Not through my wife.””

“Understood.””

The call ended.

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Give me your phone.””

Darius stepped aside.

“No.””

“You don't understand what Marcus is doing. He's making this sound criminal because he wants to charge us more money.””

“Us?””

“Yes, us! We're married. What's mine is yours, and what's yours is mine.””

“Then why did you put Jordan's name on the documents without discussing it with me?””

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

“Because somebody has to think about the children.””

Lily shrank behind her father's arm.

Darius noticed.

He always noticed now.

“You mean somebody has to think about Jordan,” he replied.

“Lily has been standing at that sink crying while you feed your son steak and cake.””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“She was supposed to finish her chores.””

“She is seven years old!””

“And Jordan is ten! He has responsibilities, too.””

“What responsibilities? Eating dinner?””

Jordan appeared behind his mother, holding his plate.

“Dad—”

Darius stopped.

The boy looked frightened, and for a moment Darius felt sorry for him. Jordan hadn't chosen the complicated mess his mother had created.

But Jordan's next words changed the room.

“Mom said Lily wasn't supposed to tell you about the papers.””

Vanessa spun around.

“Jordan, go to your room!””

“But you told me—”

“NOW!””

Jordan dropped his plate onto the nearest counter. The fork bounced against the ceramic with a loud clatter.

He hurried down the hallway.

Darius watched him disappear.

Then he turned back to Vanessa.

“What did you tell him?””

“Nothing he needs to be involved in.””

“He already is involved. His name is on the documents.””

“Because I'm trying to provide for my son!””

“And what about my daughter?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You always make everything about Lily. Her feelings, her problems, her memories of her mother. I can't breathe in this house without being reminded that I'm not the woman who came before me.””

Darius went silent.

There it was.

Not concern about the children. Not a misunderstanding about money.

Resentment.

Vanessa had been competing with the memory of a woman who was no longer alive, and she'd made a little girl pay for it.

“You knew Lily was part of my life when you married me,” he said.

“I thought things would change.””

“What things?””

“I thought you'd finally move on. I thought I'd become the woman you depended on most.””

“You are my wife. That was supposed to mean we built a family together.””

“And yet everything still belongs to Lily.””

Darius stared at her.

“She doesn't own my house, Vanessa. She's my child.””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find a sentence that would make her sound reasonable.

Darius walked to the office desk and gathered the documents into the envelope. He photographed every page with his phone, then placed the originals in a locked drawer.

Vanessa followed his movements with growing panic.

“What are you doing?””

“Preserving the evidence.””

“You're treating me like a stranger.””

“You made decisions behind my back. I don't know what else you've hidden.””

She grabbed the envelope.

Darius pulled it away before she could tear it from his hands.

“Don't touch that.””

“You cannot keep me from my own family's finances!””

“Those documents involve my accounts and my daughter's future. Until I know what you've done, you aren't handling them.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You'll regret humiliating me.””

Darius held her gaze.

“I'm not humiliating you. I'm asking questions you refuse to answer.””

She stormed out of the office.

A moment later, he heard a bedroom door slam upstairs.

Darius exhaled slowly.

Lily was still beside him, her small fingers wrapped around two of his.

“Daddy?””

He crouched.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is Jordan going to take my money?””

The question landed like a stone in his chest.

“No one is taking anything from you without me finding out what happened first.””

“But his name is on the papers.””

Darius brushed a tear from her cheek.

“I know.””

“Did I do something bad?””

“No.””

“Then why does she want everything to go to him?””

He didn't have an answer that a seven-year-old should have to hear.

So he gave her the truth he could promise.

“I don't know why she made those choices. But her choices aren't your fault.””

Lily nodded, though he could see she was still afraid.

He carried her into the kitchen, found a clean plate, and warmed the dinner he'd prepared for himself earlier. He cut a piece of steak into small bites, added vegetables, and placed a slice of cake beside her glass of milk.

Then he sat with her at the dining table.

Lily stared at the food.

“Can I really eat this?””

Darius put down his fork.

“Baby, you never needed permission to eat in your own home.””

She took one bite.

Then another.

And suddenly she began crying again.

Darius moved his chair beside hers.

“What's wrong?””

“I was hungry.””

He wrapped his arms around her while she sobbed against his chest.

Across the table, the recorder lay beside the envelope.

Its tiny red light was still blinking.

Darius picked it up to switch it off.

Instead, he noticed a second audio file on the screen.

The first recording had been labeled *KITCHEN*.

The second had no title.

It was dated three days earlier.

He looked toward the staircase, where Vanessa had disappeared.

Then he pressed PLAY.

A man's voice emerged from the speaker.

“Vanessa, you promised me he wouldn't find out until the transfer cleared.””

May you like

And Vanessa answered with a sentence that made Darius's blood run cold.

“He won't. Because after tomorrow, Lily won't even be living in that house.””
