Chapter 8: The Secret Hidden in Jordan's Room
Darius was already reaching for his keys when his phone rang.
Jordan's name appeared on the screen.
He answered immediately.
“Jordan? Where are you?””
“Dad?””
The boy's voice was barely audible.
“I'm here, son. Tell me what's happening.””
“I locked myself in my room.””
“Is your mother with you?””
“She was outside the door. She said I had to give her the papers.””
Darius walked toward the front door.
“Don't open the door if you're frightened. Is there another trusted adult nearby?””
“Grandma's in the kitchen, but Mom told her not to get involved.””
“Your grandmother is there?””
“Yes.””
“Can you ask her to stay with you?””
Jordan sniffed.
“She won't. Mom said this is between family.””
Darius closed his eyes briefly.
“Listen to me, Jordan. You are part of this family, and you're allowed to ask a safe adult for help. If you think someone might hurt you, go to your grandmother or another safe adult and contact emergency services if necessary.””
A muffled thump came through the phone.
Jordan gasped.
“She's hitting the door.””
Darius's stomach tightened.
“Stay on the phone with me if you can. I'm coming to make sure you're safe.””
He ended the call only after Jordan confirmed that his grandmother was heading toward the hallway.
Renee appeared in the doorway.
“What happened?””
“Jordan is scared. Vanessa has found something he was hiding.””
Renee reached for her car keys.
“Then let's go.””
Darius hesitated.
“I don't want to make things worse.””
“Then don't go there looking for a fight. Go there to make sure a child is safe.””
She was right.
He sent Vanessa a message stating that he was coming to check on Jordan and wanted the situation handled calmly. He also contacted the appropriate local authorities for guidance because Jordan had described feeling unsafe.
Then he drove with Renee toward the house.
When they arrived, Vanessa's car was in the driveway. The front door stood open.
Darius entered and called out.
“Jordan?””
A small voice answered from upstairs.
“I'm here!””
Darius took the stairs two at a time.
Jordan's bedroom door was shut. His grandmother, Patricia, stood outside it, looking distressed.
“Darius,” she said, “I don't know what's going on. Vanessa says he's being disrespectful.””
“Has anyone hurt him?””
“Not that I've seen.””
“Can you ask him to open the door?””
Patricia knocked gently.
“Jordan, honey, your dad is here.””
The lock clicked.
Jordan opened the door just enough to look outside.
His eyes were red, and his cheeks were wet. He wore a blue T-shirt and gray sweatpants, and his hands were trembling.
The moment he saw Darius, he stepped forward.
“I'm sorry.””
Darius caught him in a hug.
“You don't have to apologize for being frightened.””
Jordan began to cry.
“I didn't want to do it.””
Darius held him until the boy's breathing slowed.
Then he asked, “What did your mother ask you to sign?””
Jordan pulled away and looked toward the staircase.
“She said it was just a statement. She told me I had to say you agreed Lily should live somewhere else because you were too busy to take care of her.””
Darius's jaw tightened.
“Did you see me sign anything like that?””
“No.””
“Did you tell anyone you saw me sign it?””
Jordan nodded miserably.
“She made me say I was there when you did.””
“Why?””
“Because she said nobody would believe her without a witness.””
Darius took a slow breath.
“And the other papers?””
Jordan pointed toward his desk.
“I hid them.””
A notebook lay open beside a stack of schoolbooks. Beneath the desk, a small plastic folder had been pushed behind a storage box.
Jordan retrieved it and handed it to Darius.
Inside were photocopies of financial documents, handwritten notes, and several printed emails.
Darius recognized Vanessa's name on the emails.
One message contained a list of assets, including his investment accounts and the property where he and Lily lived.
Another described a proposed transfer into a private family trust.
A third message, sent to someone named Adrian, referred to the financial arrangement as a way to guarantee Jordan's future.
Darius read the sentence twice.
Once the transfer is complete, no one will be able to undo what we've arranged without a costly legal challenge.
The wording wasn't proof that a transfer had occurred, but it made the secrecy harder to dismiss.
“Jordan,” he asked, “why did you hide these?””
The boy wiped his face with his sleeve.
“Because I heard Mom talking to Uncle Adrian.””
“Who's Adrian?””
“Her brother.””
Darius had met Adrian twice at family gatherings. He remembered a charming man who wore expensive watches and talked constantly about business opportunities.
“What did you hear them say?””
Jordan sat on the edge of his bed.
“Uncle Adrian said you had to sign the papers before the bank asked questions. Mom said she could get you to sign because you trusted her.””
Darius looked down at the emails.
“Did they say anything about Lily?””
Jordan nodded.
“Uncle Adrian said Lily might make you change your mind. Mom said if Lily went away, you would be upset and wouldn't think clearly.””
The room seemed to shrink around Darius.
He had suspected Vanessa was manipulating his emotions to secure the financial arrangement.
Now he had a second account suggesting that someone else had helped plan it.
“Did you understand what they were doing?””
“Not at first,” Jordan admitted.
“Mom said it was just grown-up money stuff. Then she told me Lily had to be punished so she'd stop trying to get your attention.””
He stared at the floor.
“She made me take Lily's dessert away one night. I told her Lily hadn't done anything, but Mom said I had to show her who was in charge.””
Darius felt anger rise in his chest.
He forced himself to speak evenly.
“Did you do it?””
Jordan nodded, crying harder.
“I gave Lily the plate, then Mom made me take it back. I didn't want her to be hungry, Dad. I just didn't want Mom to get mad at me.””
Darius looked at the boy.
He was ten years old.
He had helped hurt Lily, but he had also been threatened, pressured, and used as part of an adult's plan.
Darius wasn't going to pretend that the harm didn't matter.
But neither was he going to turn a frightened child into another enemy.
“Jordan, what happened to Lily wasn't okay. You need to understand that. But telling the truth now is the right thing to do.””
Jordan nodded.
“Will Lily hate me?””
Darius thought of his daughter at the sink, crying while Jordan ate.
“I can't promise you how she'll feel. She has a right to be upset. But you can stop making things worse by telling the truth and treating her differently from now on.””
Jordan reached beneath his pillow and pulled out another folded paper.
“This is the worst one.””
Darius opened it.
It was a handwritten note in Vanessa's distinctive cursive.
If Darius asks about the second agreement, tell him he signed it during the insurance meeting. Don't mention the original copy.
Below it was another line.
Adrian will handle the bank once the trust is activated.
Darius's hands went cold.
He took photographs of the note and every page in the folder, preserving the originals.
Then he asked Jordan whether he could keep the documents safe until his attorney reviewed them.
Jordan nodded.
“I want you to have them.””
Darius placed the papers back in the folder.
At that moment, footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
Her gaze moved from Jordan to Darius, then landed on the folder in his hands.
“What are you doing with my son's things?””
Jordan stood up.
“They're not your things, Mom. They're mine.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Excuse me?””
“You told me to lie.””
“Jordan, don't be ridiculous.””
“You said Dad signed the agreement, but I never saw him sign it.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You're confused.””
“No, I'm not!””
The boy's voice cracked, but he continued.
“You told me if I didn't help, you'd send me to live with Uncle Adrian. You said I would never see you again.””
Vanessa took a step toward him.
“That's enough.””
Jordan backed away.
Darius moved between them.
“Don't threaten him.””
Vanessa looked at Darius with furious disbelief.
“So now you've turned both children against me.””
“No,” Darius said.
“You've frightened both children into keeping secrets.””
Patricia appeared behind Vanessa, her expression stricken.
“Vanessa, what is he talking about?””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Mother, stay out of this.””
Patricia didn't move.
“I heard you shouting at him. I heard you tell him to stop talking.””
“Because he is a child!””
“And so is Lily,” Darius replied.
For the first time, Vanessa seemed to realize that the people around her were no longer automatically accepting her explanations.
Her eyes moved to the folder.
Then to Jordan.
Then to Darius.
“You don't know what you've done,” she whispered.
Darius held the folder against his side.
“I think I'm finally beginning to understand.””
Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
She typed furiously, then looked up.
“Adrian is coming here. He'll explain everything.””
Darius's phone vibrated almost immediately.
An email from Elaine Brooks had arrived.
I have reviewed the additional materials you sent. Do not confront anyone further about the financial transaction until we've discussed the next steps. One document appears to contain an authorization for a transfer scheduled to be processed today.
Darius looked at the time.
11:42 a.m.
He read the last line again.
If the transfer is still pending, contact your financial institution immediately through an independently verified number and ask what protective steps are available.
He called his bank.
After completing its identity verification, he explained that he had discovered documents he did not recall authorizing and wanted to report a potentially unauthorized transaction.
The representative placed him on hold.
A minute later, she returned.
“Mr. Cole, I can see a transfer request associated with your account. It has not yet been completed.””
Darius gripped the phone.
“Can it be stopped while the authorization is reviewed?””
“I'll connect you with our fraud and security team. They can explain what options are available and what documentation they require.””
Darius looked toward Vanessa.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely frightened.
He walked into the hallway to continue the call.
Then he heard the front door open.
A man's voice filled the downstairs hallway.
“Vanessa? What's going on? Why is everyone here?””
Jordan went pale.
Darius turned toward the staircase.
“Who is that?””
Jordan whispered the answer.
“Uncle Adrian.””
May you like
And before Darius could move, Adrian called up the stairs.
“Darius, we need to talk about the money you agreed to give us.””
