Chapter 7: The Boy Who Signed His Name
For several seconds, Darius couldn't hear anything except the pounding of his own heart.
Jordan.
His ten-year-old stepson had been named as the witness to a document claiming Darius had agreed to give up his parental responsibilities.
Darius looked at Vanessa.
She stared at the closed folder on Denise Walker's desk, her fingers pressed together so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
“Tell me this is a mistake,” Darius said.
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“It is.””
“Then why did Denise just say Jordan's name?””
“Because somebody has made a mistake.””
Denise folded her hands.
“Mrs. Cole, the document has not yet been authenticated. We're not making a determination about its validity. But we need to understand how a child came to be listed as a witness.””
“He didn't witness anything,” Vanessa answered quickly.
Darius turned toward her.
“You just said it was a mistake.””
“I meant the document itself.””
“Then you know what document we're talking about?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Beside Darius, Lily began twisting the strap of her backpack around her fingers.
Denise noticed and spoke gently.
“Lily, you don't have to answer anything else right now. Would you like some water?””
Lily nodded.
Denise handed her a small bottle and waited until the girl had taken a drink.
Then she looked at Darius.
“I recommend that we pause this discussion until we can review the original document and speak with the relevant adults. If you believe your daughter has been threatened, please tell us everything you know. We can discuss appropriate safeguarding steps.””
Darius nodded.
“I have a recording.””
Vanessa's head snapped up.
“No.””
He reached into his folder and removed the digital recorder.
Denise didn't take it immediately.
“Can you explain what it contains?””
“My wife discussing making Lily feel unwanted, manipulating me into signing documents, and arranging for Lily to leave our home.””
Vanessa stood again.
“This is a private family matter!””
Denise's voice remained calm.
“Please sit down, Mrs. Cole. We need to understand whether a child's welfare may be at risk.””
Vanessa slowly returned to her chair.
Darius placed the recorder on the desk.
“I haven't edited it. The files are still on the original device.””
“Thank you,” Denise said.
“We'll need to follow the appropriate procedures for handling any recording.””
Vanessa looked at Darius with an expression he had never seen before.
It wasn't sadness.
It was hatred stripped of its usual disguise.
“You're destroying this family,” she whispered.
Darius leaned forward.
“No. I'm finding out what happened inside it.””
Denise asked a few more questions about the documents, the appointment, and Lily's account of the treatment she'd received at home. She made careful notes, explaining that the allegations would need to be assessed rather than treated as established facts.
By the time the meeting ended, Darius had been given instructions for providing additional documentation and arranging a separate consultation with an independent legal representative.
No placement decision had been made.
No one had declared the documents valid.
But Darius left the office with one certainty: he would no longer sign anything merely because someone he loved told him it was harmless.
In the parking lot, Vanessa walked several paces ahead.
Darius helped Lily into the car.
“Daddy?”” she asked.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Is Jordan in trouble?””
He paused.
“I don't know yet.””
“But he's little, too.””
Darius looked at her.
She had every reason to be angry with Jordan. She had watched him eat while she washed dishes. She had heard him repeat his mother's cruel words.
Yet she was still worried about him.
“You're right,” Darius said.
“He's a child, too. The adults need to find out what happened before deciding anything.””
Lily nodded.
Then she whispered, “I think he didn't want to do it.””
Darius stopped with one hand on the car door.
“What makes you think that?””
Lily looked toward Vanessa, who was standing beside the vehicle with her phone pressed to her ear.
“Because he cried.””
Before Darius could ask another question, Vanessa ended her call and approached them.
“Jordan is waiting at home,” she announced.
“We need to get back.””
Darius looked at her.
“I'm taking Lily to my sister's house.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You can't do that.””
“She's coming with me.””
“This is her home!””
“Then you should have treated it like one.””
He helped Lily into the car and drove away before Vanessa could continue.
His sister Renee lived fifteen minutes away in a quiet neighborhood. When she opened the front door and saw Lily clutching Darius's hand, her smile disappeared.
“What happened?””
Darius kept his explanation brief. He told her about the recording, the documents, and the appointment.
Renee listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she knelt in front of Lily.
“Sweetheart, do you want some hot chocolate?””
Lily nodded.
“And would you like to help me choose a movie?””
For the first time that day, Lily's face showed the smallest hint of relief.
“Can we watch the one with the talking dog?””
Renee smiled.
“Absolutely.””
She took Lily into the living room, leaving Darius alone in the kitchen.
His phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered but said nothing.
“You've embarrassed me in front of strangers,” she said.
“You arranged an appointment using documents I don't remember authorizing.””
“I was trying to get help.””
“Then why did you tell me Lily would be gone after tomorrow?””
Vanessa exhaled sharply.
“Because I thought you would finally understand how serious her behavior had become.””
“Her behavior?””
“She cries constantly. She refuses to cooperate. She makes Jordan feel guilty for eating in his own house.””
Darius gripped the counter.
“You heard yourself on that recording, didn't you?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You have no idea what it takes to manage a household while you're away all day.””
“You could have told me you were struggling.””
“You would have chosen Lily.””
“I would have chosen both children.””
“No, Darius. You always choose her.””
The bitterness in her voice was unmistakable.
He looked through the doorway at Lily, who was sitting beside Renee with a blanket over her knees.
“She is seven years old, Vanessa. She doesn't have the power you keep pretending she has.””
“You think you're some perfect father?””
“No. I think I'm a father who has made mistakes. And one of them was believing you without checking what was happening to my daughter.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Then he heard another voice in the background.
Jordan.
“Mom, where's Dad?””
Vanessa immediately covered the phone.
But not before Darius heard the boy ask another question.
“Are you going to tell him what you made me do?””
The call disconnected.
Darius stared at his phone.
He called back.
No answer.
He tried again.
Voicemail.
Then a message appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a handwritten note.
The letters were large and uneven, as though someone had written them in a hurry.
*DARIUS, I DIDN'T WANT TO SIGN IT. MOM SAID IF I DIDN'T, SHE WOULD SEND ME AWAY.*
At the bottom was Jordan's name.
Darius read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
*PLEASE DON'T LET HER KNOW I TOLD YOU.*
He looked toward the living room.
Lily was laughing softly at something Renee had said, her first real laugh in what felt like an eternity.
Darius felt relief and dread collide inside his chest.
Both children had been frightened into silence.
And now one of them was finally asking him for help.
He typed a reply.
You're not in trouble, Jordan. I want to hear your side. Are you safe right now?
The message showed as delivered.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Finally, the phone vibrated.
*NO. SHE FOUND THE PAPERS I HID.*
May you like
A second message followed.
*DAD, SHE'S COMING TO GET ME.*
