The Lost Sterling Daughter / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Secret

The first time I saw the old newspaper article, I couldn’t breathe.

It was a picture of a little girl standing beside a smiling family.

The headline read:

*STERLING FAMILY MOURNS LOSS OF YOUNGEST CHILD*

The little girl in the photograph was me.

Four years old.

Tiny curls.

A gap between my front teeth.

The same silver pendant around my neck.

I stared at the image for a long time.

Not because I remembered that day.

I didn’t.

But because I was finally seeing the beginning of my own story.

Daniel sat beside me.

“I kept this article in my office for years.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I thought if I looked at her face enough, maybe I wouldn’t forget her.””

My chest tightened.

“You never forgot.””

He shook his head.

“Never.””

I looked back at the picture.

A family I didn’t remember.

A life I never got to live.

Then Marcus walked in carrying another folder.

His expression told me this wasn’t good news.

“What happened?””

He placed the folder on the table.

“We found more information about Victoria.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“What?””

“She didn’t just hire someone to investigate Lily.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She hired someone to investigate Amelia Sterling.””

The room went silent.

“How long did she know?”” Daniel asked.

Marcus opened the file.

“The investigator began searching Sterling family records seven weeks before the engagement party.””

Seven weeks.

Victoria had known.

She had been standing beside Daniel every day while secretly trying to erase his sister.

I felt anger rising inside me.

“She knew I was your sister.””

“Yes.””

“And she still invited me here?””

Marcus nodded.

“She wanted you close enough to monitor but far enough away that Daniel wouldn’t notice.””

Daniel stood.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Marcus looked at him.

“It does if her goal was control.””

He opened another document.

“Victoria’s financial records show she had conversations with several people about Sterling estate planning.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“She was trying to secure her position.””

“Exactly.””

The pieces started falling together.

Victoria wasn’t just jealous.

She wasn’t just cruel.

She was calculating.

She knew that if Daniel discovered he had a living sister, the future of the Sterling fortune would change.

And she wanted to make sure I was gone before that happened.

“She tried to make me look like a thief,” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“She thought if you were humiliated enough, you would leave.””

I thought about that night.

The veil.

The ring.

The crowd watching me.

She wasn’t trying to destroy my reputation.

She was trying to destroy my chance to be seen.

The most painful part was realizing she almost succeeded.

If Daniel hadn’t noticed the necklace…

If he hadn’t trusted his instincts…

I might have walked out of that mansion believing the Sterling family hated me.

Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Send me everything.””

He ended the call.

“What is it?””

His eyes moved toward me.

“The investigator Victoria hired found Ruth Johnson.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked confused.

“She found records about your mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“And Victoria knew.””

My hands began shaking.

“Did she know my mother was dead?””

“Yes.””

The room became unbearably quiet.

I whispered:

“She knew everything.””

Daniel came closer.

“We’re going to find out why.””

But I already knew the answer would hurt.

Because people don’t hide secrets for twenty years without a reason.

There was something about my disappearance that someone was desperate to protect.

That night, I went back to my apartment.

Not the mansion.

Not the place people kept calling my home.

My apartment.

The same small place where I had lived before my entire identity changed.

I sat on my couch holding my mother’s pendant.

For years, I wondered why she never told me where I came from.

Now I wondered something else.

What was she afraid would happen if I knew?

The next morning, Daniel arrived with Marcus.

They had found a sealed adoption file.

Not the fake paperwork.

The original documents.

The ones that had been hidden.

And inside was the answer.

A name.

A signature.

A betrayal that went deeper than Richard Whitmore.

Daniel opened the folder.

His face turned pale.

I knew before he spoke.

“Lily…”

I looked at him.

“My father’s closest friend didn’t just approve your adoption.””

He swallowed.

“He was covering for someone else.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Daniel stared at the final page.

Then he said the name.

A name I never expected.

A name that changed everything.

“The person who helped make you disappear…”

May you like

He looked at me with sadness.

“Was someone your mother trusted.””
