Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside Sterling House
I read my mother’s letter three times.
The first time, I cried.
The second time, I searched for answers.
The third time, I accepted that the woman who raised me had been carrying a fear far bigger than anything I ever understood.
The letter began with an apology.
Not because she regretted loving me.
Because she regretted keeping the truth from me.
*I never wanted you to believe I lied because I didn’t love you. I lied because loving you was the reason I survived.*
My hands shook.
My mother explained that twenty years ago, she had been working as a nurse at a private medical center.
The night Daniel’s parents died, she was called to assist with emergency patients.
One of those patients was a little girl.
A little girl with a silver necklace.
A little girl who kept asking for her brother.
A little girl who was supposed to have died.
Me.
According to Ruth, I survived the crash but was taken away before Daniel or the authorities could reach me.
Someone had already arranged everything.
Someone had paperwork.
Someone had power.
Someone wanted Amelia Sterling erased.
My mother wrote:
**I knew I was holding a child who belonged to another family. But I also knew someone powerful wanted her gone. I tried to contact the Sterling family.
I tried to tell the truth. That was when I was warned.**
I stopped reading.
Warned.
By who?
I continued.
*Richard Whitmore came to see me. He told me Daniel was too young, too broken, and too unstable to handle the truth. He said the Sterling family needed time. But I knew something was wrong.*
My breathing became heavier.
Richard.
The trusted friend.
The man who helped bury my identity.
But then came the part that shocked me most.
*I discovered Richard was not acting alone.*
I stared at the page.
My mother knew.
She knew there was someone else.
Someone even closer.
The next words blurred because tears filled my eyes.
*The person controlling everything was someone inside the Sterling family.*
I dropped the letter.
Inside the Sterling family.
Not an enemy.
Not a stranger.
Someone who had access.
Someone who could influence Daniel.
Someone who could destroy evidence.
I immediately called Daniel.
He answered before the first ring finished.
“Amelia?””
I had stopped correcting him by then.
“I found a letter.””
Silence.
“What does it say?””
I looked at the words again.
“It says someone inside your family helped make me disappear.””
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
I swallowed.
“But my mother believed it.””
He was quiet for a long moment.
“Bring it to me.””
I arrived at the mansion less than thirty minutes later.
Daniel was waiting.
When he saw my face, he knew.
This wasn’t just about the past.
It was about his present.
Marcus read the letter carefully.
Then he looked up.
“There’s one thing we need to consider.””
“What?””
“Victoria may not have been the person who started this.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you saying?””
“She discovered Amelia existed. She tried to remove her. But someone else may have hidden Amelia twenty years ago.””
The room went silent.
Because that meant Victoria was only a piece of a much older betrayal.
Daniel walked toward the window.
“My family.””
He whispered the words like they hurt.
“Someone in my family did this.””
I watched him struggle.
Because finding me was supposed to heal something.
Instead, it opened another wound.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“Send it immediately.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
He looked at Daniel.
“We found the missing pages.””
Everyone moved closer.
“Where?””
“In a storage account connected to Richard Whitmore.””
Daniel grabbed the documents.
The missing pages were finally there.
The original records.
The original signatures.
The truth.
Marcus pointed to the bottom of the page.
“There.””
Daniel looked.
And froze.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
His eyes were fixed on one signature.
A signature that belonged to someone he trusted.
Someone who had comforted him after losing his parents.
Someone who had helped him run Sterling Enterprises.
Someone who had been treated like family.
Daniel finally whispered:
“My uncle.””
I looked at him.
“You have an uncle?””
He nodded slowly.
“I did.””
The words were heavy.
“His name was Thomas Sterling.””
The room went quiet.
“Was?””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Because he disappeared six months after my parents died.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Or maybe he didn’t disappear.””
Daniel lifted his eyes.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus pointed at the records.
“Because according to these documents…”
He paused.
“The man who signed away Amelia Sterling’s identity was still alive.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel stared.
“Where?””
Marcus looked at the final page.
“He’s been living under another name for twenty years.””
The past wasn’t buried.
May you like
It was waiting.
And now it knew we had found it.
