Chapter 7: The Man Who Stole My Name
The hardest truth about finding your family is realizing that blood does not always mean safety.
I used to think the worst thing that could happen to someone was being forgotten.
I was wrong.
The worst thing is discovering that someone remembered you perfectly and still chose to erase you.
For twenty years, Thomas Sterling lived somewhere in this world knowing that a little girl named Amelia existed.
Knowing she had a brother.
Knowing she had a family searching for her.
And he allowed all of us to live with a lie.
Daniel stood in his office, staring at the documents spread across the desk.
I had never seen him look so lost.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Lost.
“Thomas was my father’s younger brother,” he finally said.
I sat quietly, listening.
“He wasn’t involved with the company. He always said business wasn’t his thing.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“But he had access.””
Daniel nodded.
“More than access.””
He looked at me.
“My father trusted him.””
That sentence carried more pain than anything else.
Because betrayal hurts differently when it comes from someone who was invited inside.
“Why would he do it?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at the documents.
“We need to find him.””
Marcus had already started.
Within hours, his team uncovered what Thomas Sterling had been doing for the last two decades.
He wasn’t hiding in poverty.
He wasn’t living a desperate life.
He had built an entirely new identity.
Thomas Sterling became Thomas Reed.
A respected businessman.
A private investor.
A man who donated money to charities and appeared in local newspapers as a generous community leader.
The kind of man people trusted.
The kind of man nobody questioned.
I stared at his photograph.
He looked older now.
Gray hair.
A calm smile.
A grandfatherly appearance.
He looked like someone who would offer you a seat at his table.
Not someone who stole a child’s future.
“He’s been successful,” I said.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Because he stole what belonged to my family.””
But I shook my head.
“No.””
They looked at me.
“He didn’t steal your money.””
I touched the photograph.
“He stole my life.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the truth.
A fortune could be rebuilt.
A company could recover.
But childhood was something you only got once.
The next morning, Daniel arranged a meeting.
He wanted answers directly from Thomas.
I wasn’t sure I wanted to see him.
Part of me wanted to scream at him.
Another part of me wanted to understand.
Why?
That question followed me everywhere.
Why did you take me?
Why did you let me grow up wondering where I came from?
Why did you let my brother believe I was dead?
The meeting took place at a quiet private office downtown.
Thomas arrived exactly on time.
That bothered me.
He walked in wearing a tailored suit, carrying himself like a man who had nothing to hide.
Then he saw Daniel.
And froze.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
He knew.
“Daniel.””
His voice was soft.
Almost warm.
Daniel stared at him.
“Thomas.””
No uncle.
No family.
Just his name.
Thomas sat down.
“What is this about?””
Marcus placed the documents on the table.
Thomas looked at them.
Then he looked away.
And I knew.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was caught.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Tell me about Amelia.””
Thomas’s face changed.
The years disappeared from his expression.
For the first time, he looked old.
Very old.
“You found her.””
It wasn’t a question.
My chest tightened.
“You knew.””
Thomas looked at me.
And for a moment, I hated that he looked sad.
Because sadness was not enough.
Regret was not enough.
Twenty years were gone.
“Yes,” he whispered.
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“You knew she was alive?””
Thomas nodded.
“I did.””
The room felt smaller.
I heard my own heartbeat.
“Why?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Because I was trying to protect the family.””
Daniel laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“Protect?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“I don’t.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father was going to destroy everything.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father discovered financial problems inside Sterling Holdings. He was preparing to remove certain people from the company.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Your father knew someone was stealing from him.””
The room went silent.
“Who?”” Daniel asked.
Thomas didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Your existence changed everything.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t talk about me like I was a problem.””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“You were never the problem.””
“Then why did you take me?””
His eyes lowered.
“Because someone was going to kill you.””
The words stopped everyone.
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Thomas continued.
“I found out the accident wasn’t an accident.””
A chill moved through me.
“What?””
“The car crash that killed your parents was planned.””
Daniel went completely still.
For twenty years, he had believed he lost his parents because of tragedy.
Now he was hearing something much worse.
“They were murdered?””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“I believe they were.””
“Believe?””
Thomas looked at him.
“I never had enough proof.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Who ordered it?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
And then he said the one thing nobody expected.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel’s hands clenched.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know what it sounds like.””
“It sounds like another lie.””
Thomas accepted that.
Maybe because he deserved it.
“I made mistakes. I made terrible choices. But I did one thing right.””
He looked at me.
“I kept Amelia alive.””
I wanted to hate him completely.
But the truth was more complicated.
Because somewhere inside all that betrayal was one impossible fact.
He had not abandoned me to die.
He had hidden me.
And now I needed to know why.
“What happened after you took me?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at me.
“I gave you to Ruth.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew my mother?””
“Yes.””
He looked down.
“Ruth was the only person I trusted.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“So you handed my sister away.””
“I saved her.””
“You stole her.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Both things are true.””
That answer hurt because it was honest.
For the first time, I believed he wasn’t trying to escape blame.
He was carrying it.
Then Marcus received a message.
He checked his phone.
His face changed.
“What?””
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?””
Marcus looked at him.
“We have a problem.””
“What kind?””
Marcus turned the phone around.
A photograph appeared.
It was Victoria.
Standing outside Thomas Reed’s office.
The date was from three months earlier.
Before the engagement party.
Before she accused me.
Before anyone knew I existed.
Daniel stared.
May you like
Victoria wasn’t just trying to protect her future.
She had been connected to this from the beginning.
