Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Plan
Victoria always looked like she was in control.
That was what made her dangerous.
Some people reveal themselves when they panic.
Victoria revealed herself when she smiled.
She had smiled while covering my face.
Smiled while accusing me.
Smiled while watching everyone believe I was guilty.
And now we knew she had been meeting with Thomas.
The question was why.
Daniel stood in his office, looking at the photograph.
“How long?””
Marcus answered.
“We’re still investigating.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“How long did she know about Amelia?””
Nobody responded.
Because the answer was probably worse than we wanted.
The next few hours uncovered the connection.
Victoria had not randomly entered Daniel’s life.
She had studied him.
She knew his family history.
She knew about the missing sister.
She knew about the inheritance.
She knew everything.
She wasn’t in love with Daniel.
She was in love with the position beside him.
The Sterling name.
The Sterling power.
The Sterling fortune.
And Amelia’s return threatened all of it.
“She wanted me gone before I knew who I was,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the evidence.
“She wasn’t scared of me.””
Daniel looked at me.
“She was scared of what you represented.””
Family.
Truth.
A future she couldn’t control.
That evening, Daniel confronted Victoria.
I didn’t want to be there.
But I needed to hear her explanation.
We met in the same mansion where she had tried to humiliate me.
The same room where she planted the ring.
Only this time, she wasn’t standing above me.
She was standing alone.
Victoria walked in wearing a simple black dress.
No jewelry.
No performance.
She looked tired.
But not sorry.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t move.
“Sit down.””
She looked at me.
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
“Still playing the victim?””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Daniel’s voice turned cold.
“Careful.””
Victoria looked at him.
“I loved you.””
“No.””
The word came quickly.
“You loved what I represented.””
Her face hardened.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
I laughed quietly.
Because the audacity shocked me.
“What did you sacrifice?””
She looked at me.
“You think this is easy? Being around people like your family? Everyone born into wealth, everyone judging whether you belong?””
I stared at her.
“You were trying to erase me.””
“I was trying to protect myself.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Self-preservation.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why did you meet Thomas?””
Victoria went silent.
That silence was her answer.
“You knew,” Daniel said.
She looked away.
“I suspected.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“You knew.””
Victoria sighed.
“Thomas told me.””
The room went quiet.
“He told me about Amelia before I married you.””
Daniel looked like he had been hit.
“You were planning this from the beginning?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“At first, I wanted to help.””
I almost laughed.
“Help?””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand. If Amelia came back, everything changed.””
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“Because the truth came back.””
Victoria ignored him.
“I had spent years building a life with you. I was about to become your wife.””
She looked at me.
“Then you appeared.””
I felt anger rising.
“I didn’t appear.””
My voice shook.
“I was here the whole time. You just wanted me invisible.””
Victoria looked down.
For the first time, she had no answer.
Daniel turned away from her.
“It’s over.””
Her face changed.
“Daniel.””
“The engagement is over.””
“You’re throwing away everything because of her?””
He looked at me.
Then back at Victoria.
“No.””
His voice was steady.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think this ends here?””
Nobody moved.
“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.
She smiled.
And that smile frightened me.
“Ask Thomas why he really hid Amelia.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Victoria stood.
“Ask him who paid him.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly, we were back where we started.
The hidden records.
The missing years.
The unanswered question.
Someone had wanted me gone.
But Thomas wasn’t the beginning.
He was only the person who carried out the plan.
As Victoria walked away, Marcus received another message.
He read it.
Then looked at us.
“We found the original financial records from twenty years ago.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And?””
Marcus hesitated.
“The person who benefited from your parents’ deaths…”
He looked at me.
“Is someone still alive.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Marcus opened the file.
May you like
And whispered:
“Someone who has been living inside the Sterling family’s circle this entire time.””
