Chapter 3: The Answer He Couldn't Read
Darius had faced difficult paperwork before.
Mortgage agreements. Hospital forms. School enrollment documents. The endless stack of forms that seemed to arrive whenever a child grew another year older.
He had always read every line carefully.
Now, standing in the graduation aisle, he could barely focus on the words printed in front of him.
The report was clean and official, with the laboratory's name at the top, a reference number beneath it, and a section labeled PATERNITY DNA TEST.
His thumb trembled against the paper.
Maya stood close enough to see his face, but she could not see the result from where she was standing.
“Dad,” she whispered again.
“Talk to me.””
He swallowed.
“I need a second.””
Vanessa reached for the report.
“Give it to me.””
Darius pulled it away.
“No.””
“Darius, you're misunderstanding something.””
“Then explain it.””
She glanced at the report, then at Maya, then at Andre.
Three separate times, she seemed ready to speak.
Three separate times, she stopped herself.
Andre stared at the floor. His hands were clenched at his sides, and the gray fabric of his suit jacket pulled tight across his shoulders.
Maya noticed.
“Andre, what do you know?””
He lifted his eyes.
“Nothing that belongs in this conversation.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“Your mother and I have only been married for two years. Whatever happened before that—”
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Stop talking.””
He shook her hand off.
“No, Vanessa. I'm done being told when I can speak.””
Several graduates had begun turning toward them. A faculty member approached, then hesitated when she saw the expressions on their faces.
Maya stepped closer to Darius.
“Did it say something bad?””
Darius looked down at the report again.
“I don't know what to say yet.””
“Does it say you're not my father?””
He closed his eyes briefly.
That was answer enough to make her knees feel weak, though he had not actually answered her question.
“Dad,” she whispered, “please.””
He opened his eyes and looked at her.
“I love you, Maya.””
She shook her head, tears gathering beneath her lower lashes.
“I know you do. That's not what I'm asking.””
He tried to speak.
Nothing came.
Vanessa stepped forward, her voice suddenly softer.
“Maya, listen to me. You don't need to see that report. Whatever it says, it doesn't change your family.””
Maya turned toward her.
“You just told him he wasn't my real father.””
“I was angry.””
“You threw his flowers on the floor.””
“I was trying to make you understand.””
“Understand what?””
Vanessa's composure cracked.
“That I have spent eighteen years keeping this family together!””
Darius stared at her.
“By lying to me?””
She recoiled as if he had slapped her.
“You don't know what I had to deal with.””
“Then tell me.””
“I can't explain it in the middle of a graduation ceremony!””
“You had eighteen years to explain it anywhere else.””
His voice rose for the first time.
“You had eighteen years while I packed her lunches, while I paid for her braces, while I worked overtime to make sure she could go to college. You had eighteen years while she called me Dad and I answered every single time.””
He held up the report.
“And now you're telling me that the truth was sitting somewhere in a file cabinet while you watched me live my life?””
Vanessa's eyes shone, but her voice remained defensive.
“I never asked you to do any of those things.””
Darius stared at her in disbelief.
“No,” he said.
“You just let me believe I knew what I was doing them for.””
The words hung between them.
Maya pressed a hand against her mouth.
Andre looked away, visibly shaken.
A burst of applause rose from the stage as the principal welcomed the graduates and their families. The sound seemed impossibly cheerful against the silence surrounding the four of them.
Maya looked toward the rows of royal-blue gowns.
Her classmates were moving into position. Some waved at their parents. One girl near the front held a bouquet of sunflowers while her father photographed her from the aisle.
Maya had dreamed of being in that line.
She had imagined hearing her name announced, walking across the stage, and spotting Darius in the crowd with his proud, embarrassing smile.
Instead, he stood in front of her holding a document he could not bring himself to explain.
She touched his sleeve.
“You still came,” she said.
Darius looked at her.
“What?””
“You came to every school event. Every performance. Every time I needed you.”” Her voice shook.
“Whatever that paper says, you still did all of it.””
His eyes filled.
“I never wanted anything from you except the chance to be your dad.””
“You have that chance.””
Vanessa made a frustrated sound.
“Maya, stop making promises you don't understand.””
Maya turned sharply.
“You don't get to tell me what I understand.””
“I'm your mother.””
“And he's my father.””
“You don't know that anymore!””
The words burst from Vanessa before she could stop them.
The entire group froze.
Darius slowly lowered the report.
Andre's face changed.
Maya stared at her mother.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa pressed a hand to her mouth.
“I didn't mean—”
“Yes, you did.”” Maya's voice was suddenly quiet.
“You said I don't know anymore. That means you know something.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was upset.””
“Were you upset when you kept those papers hidden? Were you upset when you told me there was nothing unusual about my birth? Were you upset when you made Dad believe there was nothing he needed to ask?””
“Maya, please.””
“No.”” Maya took a shaky breath.
“You don't get to use that word now.””
Darius looked at Vanessa with an expression she had never seen on him before.
It wasn't anger alone.
It was the look of a man realizing that the person who knew him best might have spent years allowing him to misunderstand his own life.
He folded the report once, then unfolded it again.
“I need to read this properly,” he said.
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Darius, please. Not here.””
He gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“You were perfectly comfortable telling me I wasn't her father here.””
She stopped.
He looked at Maya.
“Your graduation is starting. You should go.””
Maya shook her head.
“I'm not leaving you.””
“You worked too hard for this day.””
“And you worked too hard raising me for me to pretend this isn't happening.””
For a moment, he looked as though he might break down completely.
Then he placed his free hand against her cheek.
“You don't have to prove anything to me, baby.””
“I know.””
She leaned into his palm.
“But I want you to know that I chose you long before I knew there was a test.””
Darius drew a shaky breath.
Behind them, Vanessa turned toward Andre.
“Say something,” she whispered urgently.
Andre stared at her.
“What do you want me to say?””
“Tell them this is being blown out of proportion.””
He looked at Maya, then at Darius.
“I can't.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Excuse me?””
“I said I can't.””
He rubbed a hand across his face.
“You told me the past was settled. You told me nobody would ever have a reason to question anything. I believed you.””
Maya's head snapped toward him.
“Why would you need to believe that?””
Andre opened his mouth.
Vanessa grabbed his wrist.
“Not another word.””
He looked down at her hand.
Then he slowly pulled free.
Darius watched them, the report still held tightly between his fingers.
For the first time, he began to suspect that Vanessa's secret might involve more than a question of biology.
But before he could ask anything else, the graduation coordinator approached Maya with an apologetic smile.
“Sweetheart, you're next. Your class is waiting.””
Maya glanced at the stage.
Then at Darius.
He gave her a small nod.
“Go graduate.””
She hesitated.
“Promise you'll still be here when I come back?””
Darius looked at the report, then folded it carefully and slipped it into his blazer pocket.
“I promise.””
Maya wiped her cheeks, straightened her cap, and walked toward the waiting graduates.
Vanessa watched her go, her face tight with panic.
Andre remained beside her, silent.
Darius stayed where he was, one hand resting over the report in his pocket.
Then Vanessa leaned toward him and whispered, “If you read the rest of that document, you'll destroy the only family Maya has ever known.””
Darius turned slowly.
“Why?””
May you like
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
And for the first time in eighteen years, she had no answer ready.
