Chapter 5: The Record They Tried to Bury

“Let go of me!””

Vanessa's voice rang across the auditorium lobby.

Darius immediately released her wrist, but he stepped between her and Maya.

“Don't touch her phone,” he said.

Vanessa straightened her dress, her face burning with humiliation.

“You have no right to restrain me.””

“I didn't restrain you. I stopped you from grabbing our daughter's property.””

“Our daughter?”” Vanessa repeated bitterly.

“You still don't understand what you're doing.””

Darius looked at her.

“Then explain it.””

She glanced around the lobby. Families were gathering near the auditorium doors, taking photographs beneath the graduation decorations. A few people had begun looking in their direction again.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Not here.””

Maya unlocked her phone.

“I'm reading the email.””

“Don't,” Vanessa whispered.

The plea sounded different from her earlier commands. It was quieter. Almost desperate.

Maya stared at her mother.

“Why are you afraid of a document?””

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

“Because documents don't tell you everything.””

“Then what do they leave out?””

“The people. The circumstances. The reasons things happened.””

Maya's fingers tightened around her phone.

“You've had eighteen years to tell me the circumstances.””

“And you think I haven't suffered?””

Darius gave a bitter laugh.

“You don't get to make yourself the victim every time someone asks you a question.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

“What did you sacrifice?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Andre stood several feet away, his face tense and exhausted. He looked like a man watching a door close on a room he had spent years trying to avoid.

Maya opened the email.

The laboratory apologized for an earlier incomplete transmission and explained that an archived document had been located under a related case number. To release the complete record, the lab needed verification from the person who had submitted the original sample.

At the bottom was a name.

*Vanessa Brooks.*

Maya stared at the screen.

“You submitted the original test?””

Vanessa's shoulders dropped slightly.

“Yes.””

Darius closed his eyes.

The admission hurt more than he expected. Not because it answered everything, but because it confirmed that the secret had been deliberate.

“You ordered a test when Maya was a baby,” he said.

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“I don't know.””

Darius shook his head.

“That isn't an answer.””

Maya stepped between them again, not to protect one from the other this time, but to make sure neither could escape the conversation.

“Why did you order it?””

Vanessa rubbed her palms against her dress.

“Because I had doubts.””

“About Dad?””

“About your biological father.””

The words seemed to change the temperature of the room.

Darius looked at her sharply.

“You suspected I wasn't?””

“I wasn't certain.””

“Then why did you let me believe there was nothing to question?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Because you loved her. You were happy. And I was afraid that if I told you, you would leave.””

Darius stared at her.

“You thought I'd abandon my own child because I might not share her DNA?””

“I didn't know what you would do!””

“So you decided for me?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Maya looked between them, struggling to reconcile the woman who had packed her lunches with the woman standing in front of her now.

“You let him raise me without telling him there was a question,” Maya said.

“You let me grow up believing everything was settled.””

“I wanted you to have a normal childhood.””

“I did have a normal childhood. Because he gave it to me.””

Her voice cracked.

“You didn't protect me by hiding this. You made my entire life feel like something I can't trust.””

Vanessa's tears finally spilled over.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Darius asked the question that had been burning inside him.

“Who did you think Maya's biological father might be?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I can't answer that without explaining what happened at the hospital.””

“Then explain it.””

She shook her head.

“Not in front of Andre.””

Andre gave a hollow laugh.

“You've spent two years telling me there was nothing left to explain.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Your involvement was never supposed to extend beyond what I told you.””

Andre stared at her.

“That's a convenient way to describe a marriage.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why did you marry her if you knew there was something hidden?””

“I didn't know the details,” Andre replied.

“I knew she had a difficult history with your father. I knew there were old documents she refused to discuss. I thought it was about their divorce.””

“Did she ever tell you I might not be Darius's biological daughter?””

Andre hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Maya's face crumpled.

“You knew?””

“I suspected there was something she wasn't telling me.””

“But you married her anyway.””

“I loved her.””

“And that was more important than the truth?””

Andre looked at her helplessly.

“I didn't know you were going to find this.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

He lowered his head.

“No,” he admitted.

“I didn't know how much of it involved you.””

Darius watched him with a mixture of anger and disbelief.

“You stood beside me at Maya's school events,” he said.

“You shook my hand at her birthday parties. You smiled for family photographs.””

Andre's eyes reddened.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Yet here we are.””

Vanessa suddenly seized her handbag.

“I'm done with this.””

She started toward the auditorium doors.

Maya called after her.

“If you walk away now, I'm getting the complete record myself.””

Vanessa stopped.

“You can't.””

“Watch me.””

“You don't know what you're opening up.””

Maya lifted her phone.

“Then tell me what I'm opening.””

Vanessa slowly turned around.

For a moment, she looked almost unrecognizable. Her carefully arranged hair had loosened near her temple, and the confidence she usually wore like armor had disappeared.

“I was twenty-two when I met Darius,” she said.

“I was scared, young, and convinced that if I lost him, I'd lose everything.””

Darius's expression remained guarded.

“You haven't explained the test.””

“I'm getting there.””

“No. You're circling it.””

Vanessa drew a shaky breath.

“When Maya was born, there was a complication at the hospital. Something happened during the delivery. The staff told me afterward that the records had been corrected.””

Maya stared at her.

“Corrected how?””

Vanessa looked at Darius.

“I was told the blood samples had been mixed up.””

Darius went completely still.

“What?””

“They said there had been a labeling error involving newborn samples. They assured me the mistake had been caught.””

Maya's hand flew to her mouth.

“Were the babies mixed up?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you ever find out?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I ordered the test because I needed to know whether you were Darius's biological daughter.””

Darius's voice was barely audible.

“And when the results came back?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I didn't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked directly at him.

“Of losing everything I had.””

Before Darius could respond, Maya's phone vibrated again.

The laboratory had sent a secure link to the recovered record.

Maya opened it.

A document appeared on the screen, accompanied by a message stating that the original report contained a second subject's identification details that had been redacted from the earlier copy.

At the bottom of the message was a final instruction.

*To verify the historical record, please confirm the identity of the second tested individual.*

Maya looked at Darius.

“Dad, there's another person's name.””

He reached for the phone.

May you like

Vanessa covered her face with both hands.

And Andre whispered, “Oh, God. She never told you who the other sample belonged to.””
