Chapter 6: The Name on the Second Report

Darius took the phone from Maya carefully, as though a sudden movement might shatter the fragile understanding holding them together.

The laboratory document was displayed beneath the bright auditorium lights. Every word was visible. Every line seemed ordinary until he reached the section identifying the historical case.

There were two subject references.

One belonged to Vanessa.

The other had been partially concealed in the copy they had received earlier.

Maya leaned against her father's shoulder.

“Can you read it?””

“I'm trying.””

Darius enlarged the document.

The second subject's name remained hidden behind a privacy restriction, but the report included a relationship classification and an old case number.

He read the classification twice.

“This isn't a standard paternity comparison.””

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the laboratory was comparing more than one relationship possibility.””

Vanessa lowered her hands.

“Darius, give me the phone.””

He didn't look at her.

“No.””

“You don't understand the legal implications.””

“Then explain them.””

“I can't explain everything from one page.””

“Then stop telling us what we can't understand.””

Maya took a breath.

“The email says I can request the unredacted report if I verify the second person's identity. Mom, who was it?””

Vanessa stared at her.

“I don't remember.””

Maya's expression hardened.

“You remembered enough to order the test.””

“I didn't keep every detail.””

“You kept the paperwork hidden in your office.””

“I kept it because I didn't know what to do with it!””

Darius turned toward her.

“You knew what to do. You decided not to tell me.””

Vanessa's shoulders shook.

“I was afraid you would leave.””

“That's the same excuse you gave us ten minutes ago.””

“Because it's the truth!””

Darius stepped back.

“No, Vanessa. It's the reason you chose. It isn't the truth about what happened.””

The distinction silenced her.

For the first time, Vanessa seemed to understand that tears and apologies would not automatically return the conversation to a place she could control.

Maya opened the laboratory's verification page.

“There's a phone number here. I'm calling.””

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Maya, wait.””

Maya stepped away.

“Don't touch me.””

The words stopped her mother cold.

Maya pressed the call button and placed the phone to her ear.

A recorded voice greeted her, then transferred her to a laboratory representative.

“Good afternoon,” a woman said.

“You've reached the records department. How may I help you?””

Maya swallowed.

“My name is Maya Brooks. I received an incomplete paternity report, and I've just been sent a reference to an older case. I need to know why the second subject was included.””

“I'm sorry you're dealing with a confusing situation, Ms. Brooks. For privacy reasons, I can't disclose another individual's information without the appropriate authorization.””

“What authorization do I need?””

“We can send you the records-release requirements and explain the process for requesting your own complete file.””

Maya looked at Darius.

“Can you confirm whether the original report involved a hospital incident?””

The representative paused.

“I can confirm that the archived file contains a reference to a hospital-associated collection. I can't discuss the circumstances over this call.””

Maya's heart began pounding.

“Was it Mercy General?””

“I can't confirm that without completing verification.””

Maya supplied the identifying information requested.

The representative placed her on hold.

For nearly a minute, nobody spoke.

The auditorium doors opened and closed as families carried flowers into the corridor. A child laughed near the refreshments table. Someone called for a missing graduation cap.

Ordinary life continued, indifferent to the fact that Maya's understanding of her family was unraveling one document at a time.

Finally, the representative returned.

“Thank you for waiting. The archived record references Mercy General Hospital, and the file indicates that a second sample was included in the historical review.””

Maya gripped the phone.

“Can you tell me whose sample it was?””

“Not without the required authorization.””

“Can you tell me whether the test established who my biological father was?””

Another pause.

“The historical file contains a conclusion, but I can't release that information through this call.””

Maya closed her eyes.

“Then send me whatever I need to sign.””

“I can do that. You should receive the instructions by email.””

“Thank you.””

She ended the call.

Darius placed a steadying hand on her shoulder.

“You did well.””

Maya shook her head.

“I feel like I'm standing in a room where everybody knows the answer except me.””

Vanessa whispered, “That's not true.””

Maya turned toward her.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I was young.””

“So was I when you started hiding things from me.””

“I didn't know what would happen.””

“You could have told Dad you were uncertain. You could have told him about the test. You could have let him decide whether he wanted another test.””

Vanessa looked at Darius.

“I thought he would hate me.””

Darius gave a small, exhausted shake of his head.

“I might have been angry. I might have needed time. But you took away my ability to make that choice.””

He looked down at Maya.

“And you took away hers.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I thought I was protecting both of you.””

“You were protecting yourself,” Darius replied.

The words landed with quiet finality.

Andre had been silent for several minutes. Now he stepped closer.

“Vanessa, I need you to tell me something.””

She stared at him warily.

“What?””

“When you told me the hospital records had been corrected, did you know there had been a possibility of a newborn mix-up?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Andre's face tightened.

“You told me the issue was an administrative mistake. You said there was no reason to revisit it.””

“I was trying to move forward.””

“With me?””

“With my life.””

Andre looked as though she had struck him.

“So our marriage was built around your decision to keep this secret?””

“Don't make this about us.””

“How can I not? You asked me to trust you.””

“I did love you.””

He let out a long breath.

“I believe that you loved me. I just don't know what else you expected me to believe.””

Maya looked at Andre.

“Did you know who the second person was?””

He hesitated.

Vanessa turned toward him, her eyes widening.

“Don't answer that.””

Andre looked at his wife.

“You don't get to control every sentence I speak.””

“Please,” she whispered.

He rubbed his face.

“I never saw the original report. But I heard a name once.””

Darius's entire posture changed.

“What name?””

Andre looked toward the floor.

“I don't know if it's the right person.””

“What name?”” Darius repeated.

Andre lifted his eyes.

“Marcus.””

Maya frowned.

“Who is Marcus?””

Vanessa went rigid.

Andre looked at her, then back at Maya.

“Marcus Reed. Your mother's old friend.””

Darius searched his memory.

He remembered the name. Not clearly, but enough to recall a man Vanessa had known before their marriage, someone who had attended a few gatherings in the early years of their relationship.

“Marcus Reed,” Darius repeated.

“You told me he moved out of state.””

“He did,” Vanessa whispered.

Andre's expression darkened.

“You told me he had nothing to do with your life anymore.””

“He didn't.””

“Then why would his name be connected to the report?””

Vanessa's eyes darted between them.

“I don't know.””

Maya stared at her mother.

“Was Marcus my biological father?””

Vanessa took a step back.

“I can't answer that.””

Darius felt something cold settle in his chest.

“Can't?””

She shook her head frantically.

“You have to understand. The test was complicated. The hospital had made a mistake. I didn't know what was reliable anymore.””

“Then why didn't you repeat it?”” Maya asked.

Vanessa looked at her daughter, tears spilling freely.

“Because the first report gave me an answer I was terrified to face.””

Darius went silent.

Maya's voice dropped to a whisper.

“What answer?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

A voice came from behind them.

“Vanessa?””

They all turned.

A middle-aged Black woman stood near the auditorium entrance, wearing a cream-colored suit and holding a graduation bouquet. Her eyes moved from Vanessa to Darius, then settled on the laboratory document in Maya's hand.

The woman's smile vanished.

“Oh, no,” she whispered.

Vanessa looked as if she might collapse.

“Renee?””

Maya recognized the name immediately.

Aunt Renee. Her mother's older sister. The woman who had always been kind to Darius, even after the divorce, and who had once let slip that Vanessa kept a hospital bracelet long after claiming it was lost.

Renee approached slowly.

“Please tell me you haven't opened that file.””

Maya stared at her.

“You knew about it too?””

Renee's face crumpled.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

Darius stepped forward.

“Find out what?””

Renee looked at Vanessa, who shook her head desperately.

Then Renee turned toward Maya.

“Baby, before you read another word, you need to know that your mother wasn't the only person who made a decision that night at Mercy General.””

Maya's fingers tightened around the phone.

“What other person?””

Renee drew a shaky breath.

“Your grandmother was there.””

May you like

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And Renee added, almost inaudibly, “She was the one who asked the hospital to keep the second baby's records separate.””
