Chapter 4: The Secret Beneath the Celebration

Maya heard her name announced just as she reached the first step leading to the stage.

For one brief moment, she considered turning around.

Her father was standing in the aisle with a sealed truth hidden inside his blazer pocket. Her mother looked terrified. Andre, the man Vanessa had married two years earlier, seemed to be struggling with a secret of his own.

And Maya was expected to smile for photographs.

“Miss Brooks?”” the graduation coordinator whispered.

“You're up next, sweetheart.””

Maya swallowed hard and nodded.

“I’m ready.””

She wasn't.

But she walked.

The auditorium erupted in applause as she crossed the stage, her royal-blue gown swaying around her ankles. The principal extended her diploma folder, shook her hand, and smiled for the photographer.

“Congratulations, Maya.””

“Thank you,” she managed.

The camera flashed.

Maya turned toward the audience.

Darius stood near the aisle, exactly where she had left him. He wasn't cheering. He wasn't waving. His eyes were fixed on her, and one hand rested against his chest where the report was tucked away.

He looked as though he were watching something precious slip beyond his reach.

Maya lifted her chin and smiled at him.

It was a small smile, trembling at the edges.

Darius returned it.

Then she walked off the stage.

The ceremony continued, but Maya barely heard the remaining names. She sat with her classmates, holding her diploma folder in her lap, while the principal delivered a speech about courage, opportunity, and the importance of believing in oneself.

Every sentence felt like a cruel joke.

When the final graduates received their diplomas, the auditorium filled with applause. Families stood. Cameras rose. Graduates rushed toward their parents, laughing and crying as bouquets changed hands.

Maya remained in her seat until her friend Jasmine nudged her shoulder.

“Girl, aren't you going to find your people?””

Maya forced a smile.

“In a minute.””

Jasmine followed her gaze toward the aisle.

“Is everything okay?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised them both.

Jasmine lowered her voice.

“Do you want me to come with you?””

Maya shook her head.

“I need to talk to them myself.””

She stood, straightened her cap, and made her way through the crowd.

Darius was waiting near the wall beneath a bright row of auditorium lights. Vanessa stood several feet away, speaking urgently to Andre.

The moment Vanessa saw Maya, she stopped talking.

Maya approached her father first.

“Did you read it?””

Darius shook his head.

“Not all of it.””

“Why?””

He glanced toward Vanessa.

“Because I wanted to make sure I understood what I was looking at before I said something I couldn't take back.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“Can I see it?””

He hesitated before taking the folded document from his pocket.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No. Absolutely not.””

Maya turned toward her.

“It's my DNA, Mom.””

“It's a private medical document.””

“You didn't seem concerned about privacy when you shouted about my parentage in front of two hundred people.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“I'm trying to keep you from getting hurt.””

“You keep saying that, but you're the only person hurting me right now.””

Darius unfolded the report.

He had read the heading and the first section earlier. Now he examined the rest, forcing himself to move slowly through the laboratory's terminology.

Maya watched his face.

“What does it say?””

He didn't answer immediately.

His eyes stopped at a paragraph near the bottom of the first page. He read it again, then turned to the second page.

His eyebrows drew together.

“That's strange.””

Vanessa's breathing changed.

“What?””

Darius looked up.

“This isn't the complete report.””

Maya stepped closer.

“What do you mean?””

“There's a reference to an additional tested party. It says the results are being interpreted alongside a separate reference profile.””

Andre went rigid.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Don't.””

Darius noticed the exchange.

“Why would there be another profile?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Laboratories use standard procedures. You don't know what every line means.””

“I know enough to read the next sentence.””

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

“There's supposed to be an accompanying report.””

Maya opened her graduation folder and removed the paperwork she had brought with her.

“The lab sent me this copy because the original was addressed to you. I thought it was everything.””

Darius compared the reference numbers.

“It's incomplete,” he said.

“Or someone sent us only part of the file.””

Maya stared at her mother.

“Did you know there was another report?””

Vanessa's face had become carefully blank.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Andre took a step backward.

Maya saw it.

So did Darius.

“Andre,” Darius said quietly, “why do you look like you've seen that document before?””

Andre's jaw worked.

“I haven't.””

“Then why did Vanessa tell you not to speak?””

“Because this isn't my business.””

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

“Exactly. Andre has nothing to do with this.””

But Andre wasn't looking at her anymore.

He was staring at the paper in Darius's hands.

“There's a date on that report,” he murmured.

Darius glanced down.

“Yes.””

“What date?””

Maya leaned forward.

“The collection date is from last week. Why?””

Andre swallowed.

“No. The other date. The one referring to the additional profile.””

Darius turned the page toward the light.

There it was: a reference to an archived sample processed years earlier.

He read the date aloud.

“October eighteenth. Eighteen years ago.””

Maya's stomach tightened.

“That was the year I was born.””

Vanessa looked away.

Darius took one slow step toward her.

“Who provided that sample?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember a DNA test involving your newborn daughter?””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“I said I don't remember.””

Andre suddenly spoke.

“You told me that test had been destroyed.””

Silence.

The noise of the graduation celebration seemed to recede around them.

Vanessa turned to her husband with an expression of pure fury.

“You promised me.””

Andre looked stricken.

“I promised not to discuss something I believed was over. I didn't promise to lie forever.””

Maya gripped the edges of her diploma folder.

“What test?””

Neither answered.

“What happened on October eighteenth?””

Vanessa's lips trembled, but she forced out a laugh.

“This is ridiculous. You're all standing here making assumptions from a few pieces of paper.””

Darius folded the report.

“Then help us understand.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because you won't accept what I tell you.””

Darius stared at her.

“You haven't told us anything.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked ready to shout again. Instead, she pressed her fingers against her forehead and took a shaky breath.

Maya had never seen her mother look so cornered.

Then Andre quietly said, “Vanessa, tell them about the hospital.””

Vanessa froze.

Maya turned toward him.

“What hospital?””

Andre's eyes dropped to the floor.

Darius's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Which hospital, Andre?””

Andre looked at Vanessa one final time.

Then he answered.

“Mercy General.””

Maya felt the blood drain from her face.

That was the hospital where her mother had told her she was born.

Darius stared at Vanessa.

“Why would a test from eighteen years ago have anything to do with Mercy General?””

Vanessa took a step backward.

Before she could answer, Maya's phone vibrated inside her gown pocket.

She pulled it out.

A new email had arrived from the laboratory.

The subject line read: *ADDITIONAL PATERNITY RECORD — ORIGINAL FILE RECOVERED.*

Maya looked up at her parents.

“There's another report.””

May you like

Vanessa lunged toward the phone.

And Darius caught her wrist before she could reach it.
