Chapter 3: The Name Hidden Inside the Melody

The ballroom had never felt so small.

A few minutes earlier, it had been filled with laughter, music, and people raising glasses to celebrate a future that suddenly looked like a lie.

Now every person stood frozen.

Nobody wanted to be the first one to speak.

Sophie held onto Salvatore’s hand as her mother’s recorded voice continued playing from the old music box.

“If you are hearing this, then I was not able to tell you the truth myself.””

The sound was faint, but every word carried through the room.

Ethan looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

His eyes stayed fixed on the music box.

On the object that belonged to the woman he had loved.

The woman he lost.

The woman everyone told him he had to move on from.

Victoria’s face had lost all its color.

For months, she had been the person controlling every conversation. She knew when to smile, when to apologize, and when to make people doubt themselves.

But now she was the one being watched.

Salvatore noticed.

He noticed everything.

“Turn that up,” he said.

Rosa adjusted the recorder carefully.

The hidden message continued.

“I don’t know who I can trust. That is why I hid this where only Sophie would find it when she was old enough to understand.””

Sophie looked up.

Her little fingers tightened around Salvatore’s hand.

“She knew I would find it?””

Salvatore looked down at her.

“Yes.””

His voice softened.

“Your mother knew you were stronger than people thought.””

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

The room turned toward her.

She forced a laugh.

“You’re all standing here believing a damaged old toy with a mysterious recording? That could have been made by anyone.””

Salvatore’s eyes narrowed.

“You recognized the key before anyone explained what it was.””

Victoria went silent.

That was the first mistake she made.

Ethan saw it.

“So you did know.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Ethan, please.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, I want to understand.””

She walked toward him.

“You’re letting your grief make you irrational.””

“My grief?””

Ethan stared at her.

“My daughter was locked away. My fiancée was caught threatening her. And now my late wife’s voice is telling us someone caused her death.””

The room stayed silent.

Victoria lowered her voice.

“You really think I would hurt Sophie?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was, some people in the room were beginning to wonder.

The recording continued.

“There was someone close to me who wanted control over everything I built. Someone who believed my family belonged to them.””

Salvatore looked around the room.

The guests.

The employees.

The people who had known the family for years.

Someone here had been close enough.

Someone had access.

Someone had a reason.

The recording stopped.

A click echoed from the music box.

Everyone waited.

Then Sophie noticed something.

“Grandpa.””

Salvatore looked down.

“What is it?””

She pointed.

“There’s another part.””

The music box had a small opening near the bottom.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Salvatore knelt down and carefully inserted it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny folded note.

Victoria moved forward instantly.

“No.””

The word escaped her mouth before she could stop it.

Everyone noticed.

Rosa stepped between her and Salvatore.

“Stay back.””

Victoria looked at Rosa with anger.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Rosa’s expression remained steady.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Salvatore removed the note.

Before he could open it, Ethan spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face was full of pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Whoever wrote that message… they knew something was going to happen.””

He looked at Sophie.

“My daughter lost her mother.””

His voice became quieter.

“I lost my wife.””

Then he looked at Victoria.

“And I almost married someone who might have known why.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Ethan, you don’t mean that.””

But he stepped away from her.

For the first time, he did not reach for her.

Salvatore opened the note.

His expression changed.

Rosa noticed immediately.

“What does it say?””

Salvatore folded the paper before anyone else could see.

“There is a name.””

The room waited.

“Whose?””

Salvatore looked toward Victoria.

Then toward Ethan.

Finally, he looked at Sophie.

“I think we need to leave this room before we say anything else.””

Victoria’s breathing became uneven.

“No.””

Salvatore turned.

“You don’t decide that anymore.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Because they were true.

For the first time, Victoria was no longer the person holding power.

She was the person trying to keep a secret buried.

Salvatore guided Sophie toward the hallway, with Ethan and Rosa following behind.

But before they reached the door, Victoria spoke.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Salvatore stopped.

He didn’t turn around.

“You already made yours.””

And everyone understood.

The night was no longer about an engagement.

May you like

It was about uncovering what happened to Sophie’s mother.

And whoever was responsible had just watched a six-year-old girl unlock the truth.
