Chapter 8: The Choice Victoria Made
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
But nobody left.
Not because they were forced to stay.
Because everyone wanted to know how deep the truth went.
Richard sat at the edge of the ballroom surrounded by security.
For the first time all night, he looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a man whose secrets had finally caught up with him.
Victoria stood near the window.
Alone.
Ethan watched her from across the room.
Sophie sat beside Salvatore.
She was tired.
Too tired for a child her age.
But she was still holding the music box.
Like she understood that it carried something important.
Salvatore looked at Victoria.
“You need to tell the truth.””
Victoria looked at him.
“I know.””
Nobody expected those words.
Especially Ethan.
Victoria slowly walked toward them.
Her red gown still looked perfect.
But the person wearing it didn’t.
“I met Richard three years ago.””
Ethan looked away.
Victoria continued.
“He knew about my relationship with you. He knew I wanted a future with this family.””
Salvatore’s expression remained firm.
“And he used that.””
She nodded.
“At first, he made it sound harmless. He said Elena had hidden information that could destroy everyone.””
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“So you believed him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Victoria looked at Sophie.
“I thought if I helped him find the music box, everything would be over.””
Sophie stared at her.
“You locked me away.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
The room became quiet.
“I was wrong.””
Sophie didn’t answer.
Because apologies did not erase fear.
They did not erase being trapped behind a locked door.
They did not erase betrayal.
Ethan looked at Victoria.
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of him?””
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“He knew everything about me. My past. My mistakes. Things I didn’t want anyone to know.””
Salvatore crossed his arms.
“So you protected yourself.””
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.””
“And hurt a child.””
A tear slipped down her face.
“Yes.””
There was no excuse.
No explanation that could make it acceptable.
Just the truth.
Rosa moved closer to Sophie.
The little girl watched Victoria carefully.
After a long moment, Sophie asked:
“Did my mommy know you were scared?””
Victoria froze.
Nobody expected the question.
“What?””
“Before she died.””
Victoria looked at the music box.
“Yes.””
Her voice became softer.
“She knew.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You talked to Elena?””
Victoria nodded.
“Once.””
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
The room changed.
Salvatore stepped forward.
“You never told anyone this.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Because she asked me not to.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Why would she ask you?””
Victoria swallowed.
“Because she knew Richard was watching me.””
Everyone went silent.
“She knew I wasn’t the person behind it.””
Salvatore looked toward Marianne.
The pieces were finally connecting.
Elena had known.
She had known Victoria was involved.
But she had also known Victoria was afraid.
“What did Elena say?”” Salvatore asked.
Victoria looked at Sophie.
“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.’”
Sophie’s eyes widened.
“She said my name?””
Victoria nodded.
“She said you were the only thing she had left to fight for.””
The room softened.
Even Salvatore.
Because beneath all the lies and betrayal, there was one thing that remained clear.
Elena loved her daughter.
Victoria continued.
“She gave me a chance to do the right thing.””
Her voice broke.
“And I failed.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the music box in Sophie’s hands clicked.
Everyone looked down.
Another hidden sound.
Another message.
Salvatore carefully opened the bottom compartment again.
This time, there was something else.
A small metal piece.
Not a key.
A symbol.
Charles stepped closer.
“I know that.””
Everyone turned.
“What is it?”” Ethan asked.
Charles looked disturbed.
“It belonged to an old private organization connected to Richard.””
Salvatore frowned.
“What organization?””
Charles hesitated.
Then answered.
“The people who helped him hide the money.””
Marianne’s face changed.
“No.””
“What?”” Ethan asked.
She looked at the symbol.
“That’s impossible.””
Salvatore looked at her.
“You recognize it.””
Marianne nodded slowly.
“I saw it before.””
“Where?””
Her eyes moved to Sophie.
Then to the music box.
“I saw it on Elena’s documents.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“It means Elena didn’t just discover Richard.””
She looked terrified.
“She discovered everyone behind him.””
The ballroom fell silent again.
Because Richard Vale had never been the entire secret.
May you like
He had only been the door.
And now Sophie’s mother had just opened it.
