Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Curtain
Richard Vale was smiling when Salvatore entered the ballroom.
That was the first thing that bothered him.
A man who had just been exposed should have looked nervous.
He should have looked confused.
He should have looked like someone trying to understand how everything had fallen apart.
But Richard stood near the center of the room, holding a glass of water, speaking calmly with guests who had no idea they were standing beside a secret.
He looked comfortable.
Like he belonged there.
Like he had been waiting.
Salvatore walked slowly across the ballroom.
Ethan followed.
Behind them came Rosa, Marianne, and Sophie.
The moment Richard saw the music box in Salvatore’s hand, his smile disappeared.
Only briefly.
But it happened.
And everyone noticed.
“You found something,” Richard said.
Salvatore stopped a few feet away.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“You knew exactly what I found.””
Richard gave a small laugh.
“Salvatore, I think emotions are getting the better of you tonight.””
“No.””
Salvatore’s voice was steady.
“My granddaughter was locked away. My daughter’s final message was hidden for years. And you’re standing here pretending you don’t know why.””
The guests around them began whispering.
Richard looked around.
Then back at Salvatore.
“You’re making accusations based on a child’s toy.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“It’s not a toy.””
Richard looked at him.
“Ethan.””
The way he said his name was almost fatherly.
That made Ethan angrier.
“You knew.””
Richard’s expression shifted.
“Knew what?””
“You knew my wife was investigating you.””
The ballroom went silent.
Richard stared at him.
Then smiled.
“Your wife had a difficult time after Sophie was born. She was overwhelmed. She imagined threats everywhere.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Don’t talk about her like that.””
“I’m saying she wasn’t thinking clearly.””
“No.””
Ethan moved closer.
“You’re trying to make her look unstable because she isn’t here to defend herself.””
Richard’s smile faded.
For years, Ethan had carried questions about Elena’s death.
People had told him it was an accident.
A tragedy.
Something that could not be changed.
But now, standing in front of Richard, he realized something painful.
He had spent years grieving someone while other people worked to control the story of what happened.
Salvatore lifted the letter.
“Elena knew.””
Richard’s eyes moved to it.
A mistake.
A small one.
But enough.
“You know what that letter says?”” Salvatore asked.
Richard said nothing.
“That’s interesting.””
Salvatore looked around the room.
“Because if you had nothing to do with this, you wouldn’t care.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
The calm mask was beginning to crack.
Victoria stood near the staircase, watching.
She looked different now.
Not powerful.
Not elegant.
Just scared.
Salvatore noticed her.
“Victoria.””
Everyone looked at her.
She flinched.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Richard turned toward her.
“Be careful.””
The warning was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Victoria looked at him.
And for the first time, she looked afraid of him.
Sophie noticed.
She stepped closer to Rosa.
“Why is she scared?””
Rosa whispered.
“Because sometimes people who do wrong are also afraid of the person who made them do it.””
Sophie looked back at Victoria.
The woman who had frightened her hours earlier was now looking frightened herself.
Richard turned back toward Salvatore.
“You’re creating chaos because you want someone to blame.””
Salvatore shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Sophie.
“We want the truth.””
Richard laughed softly.
“The truth?””
He stepped closer.
“You think the truth is simple?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew it wasn’t.
Richard lowered his voice.
“Elena was digging into things she didn’t understand.””
Ethan stared.
“What things?””
Richard smiled.
“Things your family built its entire reputation on.””
Salvatore’s eyes hardened.
“You’re threatening us?””
“I’m warning you.””
“No.””
Salvatore stepped forward.
“You’re afraid.””
That landed.
Richard’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You’re afraid because Elena found something.””
Richard looked away.
And that was the moment everyone knew.
Salvatore turned to Charles.
“Tell them.””
Charles looked uncomfortable.
But then he nodded.
“Richard used private accounts connected to the company. He moved money through several different organizations.””
The guests reacted.
Richard immediately interrupted.
“That is a lie.””
Charles continued.
“Elena found the records.””
Richard looked at him with cold anger.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
The words slipped out.
And everyone heard them.
Charles went pale.
Salvatore smiled without humor.
“Thank you.””
Richard frowned.
“For what?””
“For admitting you were the reason people stayed silent.””
A murmur moved through the room.
Richard looked around.
His control was gone.
Not completely.
But enough.
He turned toward Victoria.
“You were supposed to handle the girl.””
The room froze.
Victoria’s face collapsed.
Ethan stared.
“What did you say?””
Richard realized too late.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Sophie looked confused.
Salvatore’s voice became dangerously calm.
“You were supposed to handle Sophie?””
Richard said nothing.
And that silence was the answer.
Ethan looked at Victoria.
“You were going to get rid of the evidence.””
Victoria shook her head quickly.
“No.””
But her voice was breaking.
“I wasn’t going to hurt her.””
“Then what were you going to do?””
Victoria looked down.
“I was told to scare her.””
Sophie stepped back.
Ethan looked like he had been betrayed all over again.
“By him?””
Victoria nodded.
“I thought he only wanted the music box.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You thought wrong.””
The words sent a chill through the room.
Because Victoria finally understood something.
She had not been Richard’s partner.
May you like
She had been his shield.
And shields are always the first thing sacrificed.
