Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Smile
Nobody moved.
The hallway felt frozen.
Marianne Bell stood near the doorway, her eyes fixed on Victoria, but her words hung in the air like they belonged to everyone.
Victoria wasn’t the person Sophie’s mother feared.
She was protecting someone else.
Ethan looked from Marianne to Victoria.
“What does that mean?””
Marianne’s expression softened with sadness.
“It means your wife was never worried about Victoria alone.””
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“This woman is confused.””
Marianne didn’t even look at her.
“No. I spent months watching my best friend become afraid. I watched her change the way she moved, the way she talked, the way she protected her daughter.””
She looked at Sophie.
“She knew someone close to her was dangerous.””
Sophie held tighter to Salvatore’s hand.
“Who?””
Marianne’s face broke slightly.
“I don’t know.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Salvatore’s eyebrows lowered.
“You came here saying there was someone else, but you don’t know who?””
“I know what your daughter discovered,” Marianne replied.
“I know what she was trying to expose. But I never knew who was behind it.””
Victoria gave a small laugh.
“There it is. She doesn’t know.””
But nobody laughed with her.
Because Victoria sounded relieved.
Too relieved.
Salvatore noticed.
“You’re very comfortable for someone accused of hiding evidence.””
Victoria looked at him.
“I am comfortable because I know the truth.””
“No,” Marianne said quietly.
Victoria turned.
“You don’t know anything.””
Marianne’s eyes sharpened.
“I know you were there the night she died.””
The room changed.
Ethan looked like he had been struck.
“What?””
Victoria’s mouth opened.
Then closed.
“I was helping,” she said quickly.
“Helping who?”” Salvatore asked.
Victoria looked at Ethan.
“I was helping your family.””
Ethan stepped back.
“You never told me you were there.””
“I didn’t want to reopen old wounds.””
“No.””
His voice was different now.
Stronger.
“You didn’t tell me because you knew it would raise questions.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re choosing strangers over me?””
Ethan looked at Sophie.
Then at the music box.
Then back at Victoria.
“I’m choosing my daughter.””
The words landed harder than any accusation.
Victoria’s confidence cracked.
Just for a moment.
But enough.
Salvatore saw it.
He had spent decades studying people.
A person’s face could lie.
Their body usually could not.
“Tell us everything,” he said to Marianne.
The woman nodded slowly.
“Your daughter, Elena, came to me three weeks before she died.””
Ethan closed his eyes at hearing her name.
Elena.
The name he hadn’t heard spoken with that kind of care in years.
“She was scared,” Marianne continued.
“She said she found financial records that didn’t make sense. Money moving through accounts. Property being transferred. Things connected to people close to her.””
Salvatore looked at Ethan.
“Did you know about this?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Marianne continued.
“She believed someone was using the family’s trust to hide something.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“This is ridiculous.””
Salvatore turned toward her.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it is.””
“Then explain.””
Victoria said nothing.
That silence became louder than any confession.
Sophie looked at the music box.
“Mommy knew.””
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl stared down at the wooden box.
“She knew someone was bad.””
Salvatore crouched beside her.
“Yes.””
“Did she know she was going to leave?””
The question broke something in the room.
Ethan looked away.
Marianne covered her mouth.
Salvatore swallowed.
“No one knows exactly what she knew.””
Sophie looked up.
“But she left me something.””
Salvatore nodded.
“She did.””
“And she wanted me to find it.””
“Yes.””
Sophie touched the music box gently.
“Then we have to listen again.””
Nobody argued.
They returned to the study.
Salvatore placed the music box on the desk.
Everyone gathered around.
Rosa checked the recording device.
The hidden message began again.
Elena’s voice filled the room.
“If you found this, then the person who wanted this hidden failed.””
A pause.
“I need you to understand something. The danger is not just one person. It is a chain of people protecting each other.””
Ethan looked stunned.
A chain.
Not one person.
Several.
The recording continued.
“I kept copies of everything. The proof. The names. The truth.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“Copies?””
Salvatore looked at her.
“You seem surprised.””
She quickly recovered.
“No.””
But everyone heard it.
She was surprised.
The message continued.
“The key will open what I couldn’t keep with me. But be careful. The person you trust most may be the person standing closest.””
Then the recording stopped.
A quiet click.
Nobody spoke.
Then the lights in the study flickered.
Everyone looked up.
A second later, the security alarm sounded.
Not a loud emergency.
A warning.
Someone had opened a restricted area of the house.
Salvatore immediately stood.
“What room?””
The guard’s voice came through the speaker.
“Storage room.””
Everyone went silent.
The same room where Sophie had been locked away.
Salvatore looked toward the hallway.
“Stay here.””
But Ethan followed.
“No.””
Salvatore looked at him.
“That could be dangerous.””
Ethan’s eyes were filled with anger.
“I lost my wife because I didn’t ask enough questions.””
He looked toward Sophie.
“I’m not making that mistake again.””
Together, they moved toward the storage room.
Behind them, Victoria remained in the study.
Watching.
Waiting.
And smiling slightly.
May you like
Because while everyone was looking for what was hidden…
She knew exactly what she needed to find first.
