Chapter 11: The Man Behind The Disappearance

Marcus’s words stayed in the air.

He found us.

Not me.

Not Maya.

Not my mother.

Us.

Like we were hiding from someone.

Like this entire night was never about exposing a secret.

It was about someone coming back.

“Who found us?””

I asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

“MARCUS.””

He looked at me.

And I saw something I never thought I would see.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He knows Maya is here.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I don’t.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You always know.””

Marcus looked at the phone again.

The message was still open.

I walked closer.

“Show me.””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

I took the phone from his hand.

The message was short.

*You failed to keep them apart. I’ll handle it myself.*

No name.

No number.

Just those words.

My stomach turned.

“Who sent this?””

Marcus took the phone back.

“I don’t know.””

Maya stared at him.

“You really expect us to believe that?””

“I’m serious.””

The desperation in his voice was different.

For once, he wasn’t controlling the situation.

He was losing it.

My mother spoke through the phone.

“Nia.””

I turned.

“You need to leave.””

The urgency in her voice scared me.

“Leave where?””

“Anywhere away from Marcus.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“Stop.””

My mother ignored him.

“He isn’t the only danger.””

The words made my blood run cold.

Maya looked around the ballroom.

“We need to go.””

I looked at her.

“You disappeared for twelve years.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“I spent years thinking you were dead.””

“I know.””

“Do you understand what that did to me?””

Maya nodded.

“I lived with that every day.””

The anger inside me fought with the pain.

Because she was my sister.

Because I missed her.

Because I was furious.

Because I loved her.

“How did you survive?””

Maya looked down.

“People helped me.””

“Who?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I did.””

I stared at her.

“You.””

She nodded.

“I found Maya when she was running.””

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I was running too.””

The room went quiet.

“From Marcus?””

She nodded.

I looked at Marcus.

“You hurt both of them.””

His face tightened.

“No.””

But there was no strength behind it.

Maya stepped closer.

“Marcus didn’t start this.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“That’s what I spent years trying to prove.””

The room went still.

“Your husband was involved.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya.””

“But he wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

I felt confused.

“Then who was?””

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A man walked in.

Older.

Expensive suit.

Calm expression.

The kind of person who didn’t need to raise his voice because everyone already listened.

Marcus went completely still.

Maya whispered:

“No.””

Vanessa stepped back.

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Mom, who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because Marcus finally spoke.

A name.

A name that made Maya look terrified.

A name that explained everything.

“My father.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

Then he looked at me.

“Nia.””

My heart stopped.

Because he knew my name.

May you like

And then he said:

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
