Chapter 9: The Mother Who Kept The Secret

The phone slipped slightly in Marcus’s hand.

For once, he looked just as shocked as I was.

“My mother is dead.””

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Nobody answered.

The voice on the phone breathed softly.

“Nia.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t think.

Because grief had a strange way of changing shape.

For years, I had missed my mother.

I had visited her grave.

I had carried flowers there.

I had whispered apologies to a stone because I thought she was gone.

And now her voice was coming through my husband’s phone.

“This isn’t possible.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“I don’t understand.””

Maya stepped closer.

Neither did she.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered.

“Maya.””

My sister closed her eyes.

The sound of her name from our mother’s voice broke something inside all of us.

“Maya, I’m sorry.””

Tears immediately fell down my sister’s face.

“Mom?””

The voice trembled.

“I wanted to tell you.””

I grabbed the phone from Marcus.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then:

“It’s me, Nia.””

My hand shook.

“No.””

“I know what you believe.””

“No.””

“I know you buried me.””

My knees almost gave out.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

My son was terrified.

Not because he understood everything.

Because he understood enough.

I put the phone on speaker.

“If you’re really my mother…”

I couldn’t finish.

The voice softened.

“You always hated thunderstorms.””

My breath caught.

“You would crawl into my bed and tell me you weren’t scared.””

I covered my mouth.

“Mom…”

“You would say, ‘I’m only checking if you’re safe.’”

The memory hit me instantly.

A little girl pretending she wasn’t afraid.

My mother laughing.

Holding me.

Maya standing in the doorway teasing me.

It was real.

It was her.

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

“How?””

My mother sighed.

“I made a mistake.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What are you doing?””

I turned toward him.

“What do you mean?””

He looked at the phone.

“You knew?””

My mother didn’t answer.

That silence was terrifying.

“Mom?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“You knew everything?””

“I knew Marcus was dangerous.””

I looked at my husband.

He looked away.

Maya’s voice broke.

“Then why didn’t you help me?””

Another silence.

A painful one.

“I tried.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You didn’t.””

My mother cried.

“I was afraid.””

The confession hung in the air.

My mother.

The woman who raised us.

The woman I thought was fearless.

Was afraid.

“Of Marcus?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Not confidence.

Not control.

Guilt.

My mother continued.

“Marcus knew things about our family.””

“What things?””

No answer.

“Mom.””

Her voice trembled.

“There is something you need to know about your sister.””

I looked at Maya.

“What?””

My mother whispered:

“Maya wasn’t just investigating Marcus.””

The room went silent.

“She was investigating me.””

Maya’s face changed.

“What?””

I stared at the phone.

“What are you saying?””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“Twelve years ago, before Maya disappeared…”

She paused.

“She found out the truth about your father.””

My heart stopped.

“My father?””

Nobody spoke.

Not Marcus.

Not Maya.

Not Vanessa.

My mother’s voice became barely audible.

“Your father did not die the way we told you.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Because suddenly I understood.

This was never just about Marcus.

It was never just about a missing sister.

It was about a family secret buried long before I ever met my husband.

Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.

“Nia… Marcus is not the only person who lied to you.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then Maya.

Then the old photograph still sitting on the table.

May you like

And I realized the necklace had never been the beginning of the secret.

It was the last piece of a truth my family had spent decades hiding.
