Chapter 6: The Night That Changed Everything

I read the message three times.

Not because I didn’t understand it.

Because I did.

And I didn’t want to.

Ask Marcus what happened the night I disappeared.

My fingers went cold.

That night.

The night Maya vanished.

The night my family fell apart.

The night Marcus told me there was nothing anyone could do.

I looked at my husband.

For twelve years, I had believed his version of the story.

Now I wondered how much of it was ever mine.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The question was simple.

But it destroyed the distance between us.

Guests were still watching.

The charity event was still happening around us.

But none of that mattered anymore.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Tell her.””

His eyes snapped toward her.

“Don’t.””

“Tell her.””

Vanessa’s voice was different now.

No confidence.

No smugness.

Just exhaustion.

Marcus looked back at me.

“You’re going to hate me.””

I swallowed.

“I already don’t know who you are.””

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

“You were the last person with her.””

Marcus looked away.

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“What?””

I turned to him.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You knew Aunt Maya?””

Marcus looked at his son.

“I met her before you were born.””

“Then why did you tell us she was gone?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Because I thought I was protecting your mother.””

I stepped closer.

“From what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

Finally, he whispered:

“From the truth.””

The words felt like a door opening.

A terrible door.

“What truth?””

Marcus looked at the photograph in Ethan’s hand.

“At the time, Maya discovered something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Vanessa answered.

“She discovered Marcus was hiding money.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“That’s what everyone says before explaining something terrible.””

His jaw tightened.

“Maya found documents.””

“What documents?””

He didn’t answer.

And I knew there was more.

Always more.

Vanessa touched the pendant around her neck.

“Maya gave this to me.””

My eyes moved to it.

“You said Marcus gave it to you.””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I lied.””

The admission was so simple.

So casual.

But it made my stomach twist.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus told me you would never understand.””

I stared at her.

“You knew my sister.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She helped me.””

“With what?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

And this time, she didn’t look afraid of him.

She looked angry.

“She helped me escape him.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stepped closer to me.

Marcus’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You always say that when someone tells the truth.””

Marcus looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She stepped back.

“I protected your secret for years.””

My heart pounded.

“What secret?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Your husband wasn’t just hiding what happened to Maya.””

She paused.

“He was hiding why she disappeared.””

Before I could respond, the ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older than I remembered.

Different.

But familiar.

My entire body froze.

The world narrowed to one face.

A face I had dreamed about.

A face I thought I would never see again.

Maya.

My sister.

Alive.

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Nia.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Then she looked past me.

At Marcus.

And the fear returned to her face.

“Why is he still wearing the ring?””

Marcus froze.

I looked down.

At his wedding ring.

The same ring he had worn for years.

Then Maya whispered:

“Because he never told you the truth about our marriage.””

My heart stopped.

May you like

And before I could ask what she meant—

Maya reached into her bag and pulled out a document with Marcus’s signature on it.
