Chapter 13: The Name On The Birth Certificate

The paper on the table looked ordinary.

A single sheet.

A few printed lines.

A few signatures.

But somehow it felt heavier than every secret I had uncovered that night.

My eyes stayed fixed on the name beneath my father’s.

A name I had never seen.

A name that didn’t belong there.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody interrupted.

Because everyone knew something had changed.

I looked at my mother’s phone.

“Mom.””

The silence on the other end was enough.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

My mother cried softly.

“Nia…”

“Tell me.””

She didn’t.

And that was the answer.

I stepped back.

My entire life felt like a story someone else had written.

The childhood memories.

The family photographs.

The lessons my parents taught me.

The things they told me were true.

All of it suddenly felt like a room filled with mirrors.

Adrian watched me carefully.

Like he was waiting for me to break.

I refused.

“What is this?””

My voice was steady.

Surprisingly steady.

Adrian glanced at Marcus.

Then at Maya.

“Your father discovered the truth before he disappeared.””

Maya stared at the certificate.

“What truth?””

Adrian smiled.

“That Nia was not born into the family you believed.””

My stomach turned.

I looked at Maya.

She looked just as shocked.

“You knew?””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

For the first time that night, my sister looked completely lost.

“I swear, Nia.””

I believed her.

Because Maya was many things.

Angry.

Broken.

Afraid.

But she had never looked at me with deception.

I turned back to Adrian.

“Who is my father?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Marcus suddenly spoke.

“Adrian.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face was pale.

“What are you doing?””

Adrian looked amused.

“Finally asking the right question.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You promised.””

The room froze.

I looked at him.

“You promised what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Adrian laughed quietly.

“This is why you were never meant to lead anything.””

Marcus’s fists tightened.

“You said nobody would know.””

“And nobody did.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Until tonight.””

I felt sick.

Not because I didn’t understand.

Because I was beginning to.

Marcus hadn’t just hidden secrets.

He had been trapped inside them.

“Why me?””

I asked.

Everyone became quiet.

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“Because your father left something behind.””

“What?””

“A legacy.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Your father owned information that could destroy powerful people.””

“And I was what?””

His eyes met mine.

“The key.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Maya immediately stepped in front of me.

“Stay away from her.””

Adrian smiled.

“Still protecting your sister.””

“She’s my family.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She’s your sister.””

Then he looked at Maya.

“But family has always been more complicated than that.””

Maya’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Marcus.

“Tell them.””

Marcus stayed silent.

“Tell them what happened after Maya disappeared.””

My heart dropped.

I turned toward him.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I found Maya.””

Maya froze.

“You what?””

He swallowed.

“The night you disappeared.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You found her?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe she was gone?””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I thought she was dead.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why didn’t you help me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because my father threatened you.””

Adrian’s expression didn’t change.

But Marcus continued.

“He said if I helped you, he would destroy Nia.””

I felt my heart stop.

“Me?””

Marcus nodded.

“He knew you were the one person I couldn’t lose.””

I laughed bitterly.

“And you still lost me.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Marcus didn’t defend himself.

He just accepted it.

Maya wiped her tears.

“You could have told her.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Every day.””

I stared at him.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Adrian suddenly reached for the document.

“This conversation is becoming emotional.””

Maya turned toward him.

“You’re scared.””

Adrian looked at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She smiled slightly.

“Because Nia is finally asking questions.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

And that was when I realized.

The powerful man who controlled everyone in the room was afraid of one thing.

The truth.

I picked up the birth certificate.

“What happens if everyone finds out?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Everything your family built collapses.””

I stared at him.

“Good.””

Nobody expected that.

Not even me.

I looked at Maya.

At Ethan.

At Marcus.

At the people who had carried secrets for years.

“I spent my entire life protecting people who lied to me.””

My voice became stronger.

“I’m done.””

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked down.

The color left his face.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

He lowered the phone.

May you like

And whispered:

“The files are already public.””
