Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Disappearance

Julian read the message again.

Then again.

The words didn’t change.

*Stop looking for Lena.*

*Or you’ll lose your daughter too.*

For the first time in years, Julian felt something stronger than anger.

Fear.

Not for himself.

Never for himself.

For the little girl who had trusted him enough to hold his hand.

The little girl who had looked at him and asked the question no child should ever have to ask.

*How do I know you’ll come back?*

And now, only minutes later, someone had taken her.

“Find every exit.””

Julian’s voice cut through the wedding reception.

The guests immediately turned.

The calm, controlled man they knew was gone.

This was someone else.

Someone dangerous.

Marcus stepped closer.

“I already checked the garden.””

“Check again.””

“Julian—”

“Again.””

Marcus nodded.

He understood.

This was not a request.

Within seconds, the peaceful wedding reception became chaos.

Security guards moved through the property.

Guests were asked to stay inside.

Cars were inspected.

The beautiful decorations that had represented celebration now looked like the remains of something destroyed.

Celeste stood near the entrance, watching Julian.

For once, she had no words.

“You knew this could happen,” Julian said.

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You knew someone was watching Lena.””

Celeste’s face changed.

“Julian…”

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Her eyes moved away.

That was enough.

Julian clenched his fists.

“Who?””

Celeste remained silent.

“Who took her?””

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“You lied for twelve years.””

Her expression broke slightly.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Julian laughed bitterly.

“By letting me believe Lena abandoned me?””

“I had no choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

Celeste looked toward the garden.

“I chose the option where you stayed alive.””

The words stopped him.

Julian stared.

“What does that mean?””

Celeste lowered her voice.

“It means the people who wanted Lena gone knew about you.””

The noise around them faded.

“They knew about me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Lena loved you.””

Julian looked away.

The answer hurt more than he expected.

Celeste continued.

“She knew if they couldn’t control her, they would come after the person she trusted most.””

“And you?””

Celeste looked down.

“I was the only person she thought could keep the secret.””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“You failed.””

The words hit her.

She didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

“I know.””

A security guard suddenly rushed toward them.

“Mr. Julian.””

Julian turned.

“What?””

“We found something.””

They followed him to the side of the property near the parking area.

Behind a row of trees was a small white van.

The back door was open.

Inside was nothing.

Except one thing.

Amara’s plate of wedding cake.

Untouched.

Julian stopped breathing.

The cake sat there perfectly.

The strawberry still on top.

A cruel reminder of how happy she had been only moments before.

Then Marcus pointed.

“There’s something else.””

A small envelope rested beside the plate.

Julian picked it up.

His name was written on the front.

Again.

In the same handwriting as the first letter.

Lena’s handwriting.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A recent one.

Not twelve years old.

Not from the past.

From today.

Julian stared.

The picture showed Amara standing outside the wedding reception.

But behind her was someone else.

Someone watching.

Someone Julian recognized.

His face went cold.

Because the person in the photograph was the same man from Lena’s old picture.

The same man standing outside the company building.

The same man whose presence had been hidden.

Marcus saw his expression.

“Who is that?””

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at the photograph again.

Then whispered:

“My uncle.””

The name felt impossible.

Richard.

His father’s younger brother.

The man who had helped raise him after his father died.

The man who had always told Julian:

“Family protects family.””

Marcus stared.

“Your uncle took her?””

Julian folded the photo.

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, he already knew.

Richard had been too close.

Too involved.

Too helpful.

The perfect person to hide behind.

Celeste approached slowly.

When she saw the photograph, all the color disappeared from her face.

“You found him.””

Julian looked at her.

“You knew.””

Celeste didn’t deny it.

“You knew Richard was involved.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“You think I wanted to believe it?””

Julian stepped closer.

“You let me trust him.””

“I was trying to gather proof.””

“For twelve years?””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

Celeste looked exhausted.

“I wasn’t protecting Richard.””

She paused.

“I was protecting Lena.””

Julian stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Celeste looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“Lena wasn’t killed because she discovered the money.””

“Then why?””

“Because she discovered something worse.””

Julian waited.

Celeste whispered:

“She discovered your father wasn’t the person behind it.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Richard wasn’t following orders.””

Julian frowned.

“Then who was?””

Celeste looked directly at him.

“Someone inside your family.””

Before Julian could respond, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone went silent.

He answered immediately.

“Where is she?””

No greeting.

No hesitation.

A man’s voice came through.

“Still asking the wrong questions, Julian.””

Julian’s face tightened.

“Who are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“You really don’t recognize me?””

Julian looked at the phone.

The voice sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

“Let me talk to Amara.””

Silence.

Then a small voice.

“Julian?””

His heart nearly stopped.

“Amara!””

The little girl sounded scared.

“Are you there?””

“I’m here.””

“Don’t worry,” he said quickly.

“I’m coming.””

The man took the phone back.

“She trusts you already.””

Julian’s grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

“You should be asking why Lena never told you the truth.””

“I’m not playing games.””

“You spent twelve years believing a lie.””

Julian looked at Celeste.

“What do you want?””

The man laughed softly.

“Your family built an empire on secrets.””

“I asked what you want.””

“Justice.””

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“Where is my daughter?””

The voice became colder.

“Your daughter?””

A pause.

Then:

“You finally accepted her.””

Julian said nothing.

The man continued.

“That’s the problem with people like you. You only care when the truth becomes impossible to ignore.””

Julian closed his eyes.

“Let her go.””

“You want Amara back?””

“Yes.””

“Then find Lena’s final message.””

Julian froze.

“What?””

“The one she hid from everyone.””

“There is no message.””

The man laughed.

“There is always a backup plan with Lena.””

Julian looked at the pendant.

The hidden recording.

The letters.

The photograph.

“She left something else.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

The man was silent for a moment.

Then said:

“Where you first promised her you would never leave.””

Julian’s breath caught.

The old pier.

The place where he and Lena had made promises as teenagers.

The place nobody else knew about.

“How do you know that?””

The voice became almost a whisper.

“Because I was there.””

Julian froze.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then the man said something that made Julian’s blood run cold.

“I watched your father kill Lena.””

The call ended.

Julian stared at the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because the impossible had just become possible.

Marcus looked at him.

“What did he say?””

Julian slowly lowered the phone.

His face was pale.

“He said he saw my father kill Lena.””

Celeste’s eyes widened.

“That’s impossible.””

Julian looked at the photograph in his hand.

At the face of his uncle.

At the secret that had controlled their lives for twelve years.

Then his phone received one final message.

A location.

The old pier.

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want your daughter alive.*

Julian looked toward the darkening sky.

The wedding was over.

The search had begun.

And somewhere waiting in the shadows was the person who had destroyed his family.

May you like

The person who knew what really happened to Lena.

The person who had just taken his daughter.
