Chapter 8: The Truth She Buried
Julian forgot how to move.
The woman standing in front of him looked different.
Twelve years had changed her.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face carried lines that weren’t there before.
Her eyes held exhaustion.
But he knew those eyes.
He knew the way she looked at him.
Like she had spent every day trying not to remember him.
“Lena…”
Her name left his mouth like a prayer.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then Julian crossed the distance between them.
He stopped just inches away.
Because some part of him was afraid.
Afraid that if he touched her, she would disappear.
Again.
“You’re alive.””
Lena’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The answer broke something inside him.
Not because she was alive.
Because she had been alive all this time.
And he had been grieving someone who was still breathing.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
His voice was quiet.
But the pain behind it was impossible to hide.
Lena looked down.
“I know.””
“Twelve years.””
“I know.””
“I buried you.””
Her eyes closed.
“I know.””
Julian turned away.
He pressed his hands against his face.
All the anger.
All the heartbreak.
All the nights wondering what he did wrong.
It all came rushing back.
“You had a daughter.””
Lena looked toward Amara.
The little girl was standing a few feet away, watching them.
“I know.””
“You had our daughter.””
“I know.””
“And you let me miss everything.””
The words hurt both of them.
Lena stepped closer.
“I never wanted that.””
“Then why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I wanted you alive.””
Julian looked at her.
“I would have chosen you.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you let me?””
“Because I knew you.””
The answer surprised him.
Lena wiped her tears.
“You would have fought. You would have come after me. You would have exposed everything.””
“Yes.””
“And Richard would have destroyed you.””
Julian froze.
The name sounded different now.
Not like family.
Like an enemy.
“He threatened you?””
Lena looked away.
“He threatened everyone.””
She glanced at Amara.
“Especially her.””
Julian immediately moved closer to Amara.
“She knows?””
Lena shook her head.
“She knows enough.””
The little girl looked between them.
“Are you really my mom?””
Lena broke.
She rushed forward and dropped to her knees.
Amara stared.
For years, she had carried questions no child should carry.
Why her mother left.
Why adults whispered.
Why she had to move from place to place.
Now the answer was standing in front of her.
“Yes,” Lena whispered.
“I’m your mom.””
Amara’s lips trembled.
“You came back.””
Lena nodded.
“I tried.””
“Why didn’t you find me?””
The question was gentle.
But it hurt more than anger.
Lena looked down.
“Because every time I got close, someone moved you.””
Amara’s eyes filled.
“I waited.””
Lena covered her mouth.
“I know.””
“No one came.””
“I know.””
The two words carried twelve years of pain.
Then Amara stepped forward.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like she wasn’t sure if she was allowed.
And Lena opened her arms.
Her daughter ran into them.
Julian watched.
And for the first time that night, he felt something other than anger.
He felt relief.
His family was broken.
But not completely gone.
Daniel quietly stepped away, giving them space.
Julian noticed.
“Daniel.””
The older man stopped.
“Thank you.””
Daniel nodded.
“I should have done more.””
Julian looked at him.
“We all should have.””
The four of them stood there under the night sky.
A family reunited.
But the danger wasn’t over.
Julian knew that.
The truth had a price.
And someone had spent twelve years trying to hide it.
Eventually, Lena pulled away from Amara.
Her expression changed.
“We have to leave.””
Julian frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Richard knows I’m here.””
Daniel looked toward the road.
“She’s right.””
Julian shook his head.
“No.””
Both of them looked at him.
“I’m done running.””
Lena’s expression softened.
“Julian.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“For twelve years, everyone made decisions for me.””
He looked at Amara.
“They took my daughter from me.””
Then at Lena.
“They took you.””
His jaw tightened.
“I’m not letting them take anything else.””
Lena stared at him.
Then quietly said:
“You sound like your father.””
Julian froze.
He remembered Daniel’s words.
He remembered the recording.
“The truth about my father.””
Lena’s face changed.
“You heard it.””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
“Daniel.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at Julian.
“Then you know we don’t have much time.””
“What did my father do?””
Lena looked toward the dark water.
“He wasn’t the man people thought he was.””
Julian felt his chest tighten.
“I need the truth.””
Lena nodded.
“Your father built the company.””
“I know.””
“But he also made mistakes.””
“What kind?””
Lena hesitated.
“The kind powerful people make when they think nobody can stop them.””
Julian waited.
“He created illegal accounts.””
Julian looked away.
“But Richard was worse.””
Lena continued.
“Your father realized too late that Richard was using the company for things he didn’t approve of.””
“Then why didn’t he expose him?””
“Because Richard had leverage.””
“What leverage?””
Lena looked at him.
“Your mother.””
Julian went still.
“My mother?””
“Your mother found the same evidence I did.””
The pieces started connecting.
“The company archives.””
Lena nodded.
“That’s where the proof is.””
Julian looked toward the city lights in the distance.
“And Richard knows.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he invite me there?””
Lena’s expression became fearful.
“Because he wants something.””
“What?””
“You.””
Julian frowned.
“Why?””
Lena took a deep breath.
“Because you’re the only person who can legally destroy everything he built.””
The answer shocked him.
“How?””
“Your father left ownership documents.””
Julian remembered.
The company.
The inheritance.
The things he never questioned.
“He knew Richard would try to take control.””
Lena nodded.
“He trusted you to fix what he couldn’t.””
Julian looked at her.
“And you knew this?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide?””
Lena looked at Amara.
“Because Richard found out I knew.””
Her voice became quieter.
“He gave me a choice.””
Julian waited.
“Disappear…”
A pause.
“Or watch everyone I love disappear.””
The words were almost a whisper.
Julian’s anger softened.
Not disappeared.
But changed.
He understood now.
Lena hadn’t left because she didn’t love him.
She left because she loved him too much.
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
“What?””
Julian noticed.
“What happened?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“He knows.””
Lena went pale.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Julian.
“Richard.””
Julian stepped forward.
“How?””
Daniel looked at Amara.
“He tracked her necklace.””
Julian immediately looked at the pendant.
The same pendant that had revealed everything.
Lena touched it gently.
“I knew someday it would lead you to the truth.””
Julian looked at her.
“You planned this?””
“I hoped.””
A sound interrupted them.
A car door closing.
Everyone turned.
At the end of the road, headlights appeared.
One vehicle.
Then another.
Julian’s expression hardened.
“They found us.””
Daniel moved toward them.
“We need to go.””
But Lena didn’t move.
She looked at Julian.
“No.””
He frowned.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
But determined.
“We can’t run anymore.””
The cars stopped.
Doors opened.
Men stepped out.
Then a familiar figure appeared.
Richard.
Julian’s uncle walked toward the pier calmly.
Still wearing the same expensive suit.
Still carrying the same confident smile.
As if this was just another business meeting.
“Julian,” Richard called.
His voice was warm.
Almost loving.
“I’m glad you finally found the truth.””
Julian stared at him.
“You took my daughter.””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Lena.
“She took herself.””
Lena’s face turned cold.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored her.
He looked back at Julian.
“You want answers?””
Julian said nothing.
Richard spread his arms.
“Then ask.””
The ocean moved behind them.
The night became silent.
Julian stepped forward.
“Why?””
Richard smiled.
“Because your father made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Richard looked directly at him.
“He chose you.””
Julian felt a chill.
Richard continued.
“And now I’m going to fix what he started.””
He looked at Amara.
Then at Lena.
Then back at Julian.
“You have until midnight to decide.””
“Decide what?””
Richard smiled.
“Whether you want the truth…”
May you like
A pause.
“Or whether you want your family alive.””
