Chapter 6: The Promise at the Old Pier

The old pier looked exactly the same.

That was the first thing Julian noticed.

The second thing was how wrong that felt.

Twelve years had passed.

The wooden boards were older now. Some were cracked. The paint on the railing had faded away. The waves below were darker under the night sky.

But the place still carried every memory he had tried to bury.

This was where Lena had laughed at him for being too serious.

Where she had told him he needed to stop carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Where she had placed a small silver pendant in his hand and said:

“Promise me something.””

Julian had smiled.

“What?””

“Promise you’ll never let money change who you are.””

He remembered answering without hesitation.

“I promise.””

Back then, he thought promises were simple.

He thought love was enough.

He thought truth always came out.

Now he stood alone on the pier, wondering how many lives could be destroyed by the things people chose not to say.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*Keep walking.*

Julian looked around.

Nothing.

Only the sound of the ocean.

He continued forward.

Every step felt like walking into a memory.

At the end of the pier, a figure stood waiting.

A man wearing a black jacket.

His face hidden in the darkness.

Julian stopped.

“Where is my daughter?””

The man didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked out at the water.

“She looks like Lena.””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“Who are you?””

The man slowly turned.

And Julian froze.

Because he knew him.

Not from a photograph.

Not from a rumor.

From his own life.

“Daniel?””

The man said nothing.

Julian stared.

Daniel was his father’s former driver.

A man who had worked for their family for almost twenty years.

A man who disappeared shortly after Lena vanished.

A man everyone assumed had left the country.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Disappointed?””

Julian stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“Confused.””

Daniel looked away.

“That makes two of us.””

“Where is Amara?””

“She’s safe.””

Julian’s patience disappeared.

“I didn’t come here to talk.””

“You came here because you think you can fix everything.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Just like your father.””

Julian stopped.

The comparison angered him.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

“Why?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because you still believe the story they gave you?””

“My father was not a murderer.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Your mother said the same thing about him.””

Julian went still.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Before she died, your mother knew something was wrong.””

Julian stared.

His mother had died when he was young.

Long before Lena disappeared.

“What does my mother have to do with this?””

“Everything.””

The waves crashed beneath them.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small recorder.

Old.

Scratched.

But protected carefully.

Julian recognized it immediately.

“That belongs to Lena.””

“Yes.””

“How did you get it?””

“Because she trusted me.””

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why didn’t you help her?””

Daniel looked down.

The guilt on his face answered before his words did.

“I tried.””

“And?””

“I failed.””

The silence between them was heavy.

Julian looked toward the dark water.

“My whole life, people have told me Lena left.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She didn’t.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Your uncle Richard found out Lena had evidence.””

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Evidence against my father?””

“No.””

Daniel paused.

“Evidence against Richard.””

The answer surprised him.

Julian remembered Celeste’s words.

Someone inside the family.

Not his father.

Richard.

Daniel continued.

“Your father built the company. But Richard controlled what happened behind the scenes.””

Julian shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you understand Richard.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“He never wanted to build something. He wanted to own something.””

Julian remained silent.

“Your father trusted him.””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Everyone did.””

The truth felt familiar.

Because Julian realized something.

The people closest to him were always the ones who had the most access.

“Where is Amara?””

Daniel looked toward the woods beside the pier.

“She’s close.””

Julian immediately turned.

“Bring her out.””

“Not yet.””

His eyes flashed.

“Not yet?””

Daniel held up a hand.

“If you rush in, she gets hurt.””

Julian stopped.

The words worked because they were true.

No matter how angry he was, Amara came first.

Daniel continued.

“Richard has been watching you.””

“For how long?””

“Since Lena died.””

Julian’s face hardened.

“Why?””

“Because he knows you inherited everything.””

The answer confused him.

“My company?””

“Yes.””

“But Richard helped build it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He thought he deserved more.””

Julian looked toward the recorder.

“What’s on that?””

“The truth.””

“About Lena?””

“About your family.””

Julian reached for it.

Daniel pulled it back.

“Before you hear it, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Lena didn’t hide Amara from you because she didn’t trust you.””

Julian’s expression changed.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she knew you would choose her.””

The sentence hurt.

Because it was exactly what Lena would have believed.

Julian closed his eyes briefly.

“She thought I would come after her.””

“Yes.””

“And that’s why she stayed away.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew Richard would use you against her.””

Julian looked down.

The anger he carried for twelve years suddenly felt different.

It wasn’t anger at Lena.

It was grief.

He had spent years believing she abandoned him.

When she had actually been protecting him.

A small sound came from behind the trees.

Julian turned immediately.

“Amara?””

No answer.

He moved forward.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Julian looked at him.

“She’s scared.””

“I know.””

“She needs to see that you’re not angry.””

Julian froze.

Because he realized Daniel was right.

Amara had spent her whole life watching adults disappear.

Watching people make promises.

Then break them.

Julian lowered his voice.

“Amara?””

A small figure slowly appeared between the trees.

Her worn dress was dirty.

Her hair was messy.

But she was safe.

The second she saw Julian, her eyes filled.

“You came.””

Julian walked toward her.

“Yes.””

She ran.

Straight into him.

Julian caught her.

For a moment, he forgot everything else.

The lies.

The company.

Richard.

The past.

All he felt was a little girl holding onto him like he was the only safe place left.

“I knew you would come,” she whispered.

Julian closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Amara pulled back.

“Why?””

His voice broke.

“Because I should have found you sooner.””

She looked confused.

“You didn’t know where I was.””

“That doesn’t matter.””

He touched her shoulder gently.

“I should have known.””

Amara looked at him.

Then asked the question he feared.

“Are you my dad?””

Julian went completely still.

Behind them, Daniel looked away.

Even the ocean seemed quiet.

Julian had imagined saying it.

He had imagined the moment.

But there was no perfect way.

No perfect words.

So he told the truth.

“Yes.””

Amara stared.

“For real?””

Julian nodded.

“For real.””

She looked down.

“My mom said you would be scared.””

A tear formed in Julian’s eye.

“She knew me too well.””

“She said you would think you weren’t ready.””

Julian smiled sadly.

“Your mom was right.””

Amara looked up.

“But you’re here.””

“Yes.””

“Does that mean you’re staying?””

Julian looked at her.

At the child he had lost twelve years with.

The child he would never lose again.

“Yes.””

This time, the promise meant something.

Then Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

Julian noticed.

“What happened?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

His face was pale.

“Richard knows you’re here.””

Julian’s body went tense.

“How?””

Daniel looked at Amara.

Then at Julian.

“Because he was never trying to hide from you.””

A pause.

“He was trying to bring you here.””

Julian stared.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because Richard has something you don’t know.””

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the dark road leading away from the pier.

And whispered:

“He has Lena.””

Julian’s blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice trembled.

“Because the woman you buried twelve years ago…”

May you like

He looked at the recorder in his hand.

“…was never actually dead.””
