Chapter 10: The Father Who Chose Her

The world became silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

There is a difference.

Quiet is when nothing is happening.

Silence is when something is happening, and your mind cannot process it.

I stood in the school parking lot with my phone still against my ear.

The call had ended.

But I could still hear the woman’s voice.

*We don’t know where she is.*

My daughter.

My little girl.

Gone.

“Ethan.””

Vanessa’s voice sounded far away.

I turned toward her.

For the first time since all of this started, there was no anger between us.

No secrets.

No accusations.

Only fear.

“Where would he take her?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You knew him.””

“I knew who he was.””

“Then think.””

My voice cracked.

“Think.””

She closed her eyes.

And then suddenly, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“There’s a place.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“An old house.””

“What house?””

“His father’s.””

I grabbed my keys.

“Address.””

She told me.

I started walking.

Then stopped.

Because something hit me.

The same thing that had been haunting me for days.

The question of whether I was Lily’s biological father.

Whether blood mattered.

Whether a piece of paper could erase six years.

And then I realized something.

I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

Because Daniel had made one mistake.

He thought being a father was about having a claim.

It wasn’t.

It was about showing up.

And I had spent six years showing up.

I drove faster than I should have.

Vanessa sat beside me, calling every person she knew.

The police.

The school.

Anyone who could help.

Neither of us spoke much.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Everything that mattered was ahead of us.

When we reached the house, it looked abandoned.

Old wooden steps.

Broken fence.

Dark windows.

The kind of place where memories went to die.

I got out.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Be careful.””

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

That was what she said.

But I saw her face.

She wasn’t protecting Daniel.

She was protecting me.

I nodded.

Then walked toward the door.

It was unlocked.

Inside, the house smelled like dust and old wood.

“Lily?””

My voice echoed.

No answer.

Then I heard something.

A small sound.

A sniffle.

Upstairs.

I ran.

“Lily!””

I opened the bedroom door.

And there she was.

Sitting on the floor.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her eyes were red.

But she was okay.

May you like

I dropped to my knees.

“Oh
