Chapter 6: The Signature I Was Never Supposed to See
I stared at the document until my eyes burned.
The words blurred.
Not because I couldn’t read them.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
*Parental Acknowledgment Amendment Request.*
A request to change something about Lily’s parentage.
A document dated before I ever signed the papers.
Before I held her in my arms.
Before I whispered that I would protect her.
My hand moved slowly across the page.
Two signatures.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Not mine.
Never mine.
A thousand thoughts crashed together at once.
Had Vanessa planned to tell me?
Had she planned to leave?
Had Daniel been waiting all these years for the right moment?
I heard footsteps behind me.
“Ethan?””
I turned.
Vanessa stood at the entrance of the kitchen.
The second she saw the document in my hand, all color left her face.
She didn’t ask what I found.
She already knew.
“How long?”” I asked.
Her lips trembled.
“Ethan…”
“How long did you know about this?””
She looked down.
“That’s not what it says.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“You’re still doing it.””
“Doing what?””
“Avoiding the question.””
She walked closer.
“I can explain.””
“Six years.””
Her eyes filled.
“Please.””
“No.””
I placed the document on the table.
“No more please. No more explanations after I find something you hid.””
She looked at the paper.
“I never signed it.””
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””
“It matters.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t want to change anything.””
I stared at her.
“Then why was it created?””
Silence.
“Vanessa.””
She sat down.
Her shoulders dropped.
“I was scared.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same answer.
The same word that had followed every secret.
“I was scared.””
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked at the document.
“When Daniel came to the hospital, he brought papers.””
“What kind of papers?””
“These.””
“Why?””
“He wanted legal rights.””
My chest tightened.
“And you considered it?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I never wanted that.””
“Then why sign anything?””
“I didn’t.””
I looked at the signatures.
“Your name is right there.””
She shook her head.
“I signed because he told me something.””
“What?””
Her voice became quiet.
“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would tell you everything before Lily was born.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“He knew about you.””
“How?””
“Because I told him.””
My jaw tightened.
“You told him about me?””
“Before Lily was born, I told him I had met someone.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought he deserved to know I was moving on.””
She looked ashamed.
“I was trying to end things peacefully.””
“And he didn’t accept it.””
“No.””
The kitchen felt smaller.
Like the walls were closing in.
“What exactly did he threaten?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He said he would tell you Lily wasn’t yours.””
“That was true.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But I needed it.
“He said he would tell you everything about my past. About him. About how I got pregnant.””
She swallowed.
“And he knew you were a good person. He knew you would question everything.””
I looked at the document again.
“But I would have stayed.””
“I know.””
“You don’t know that.””
“Yes, I do.””
She looked at me.
“Because I watched you love her before she was even born.””
That sentence almost broke me.
Because it reminded me of the man I was before all this.
The man who believed love could fix anything.
“What happened after this document?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“I refused to file it.””
“Daniel agreed?””
“No.””
“What did he do?””
“He disappeared.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did you still have the document?””
“Because I kept everything.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew one day he would come back.””
That answer scared me.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“People like Daniel don’t leave. They wait.””
I looked toward the window.
The backyard was dark.
The same backyard where Lily used to run barefoot in summer.
The same place where I taught her how to ride a bike.
How could someone look at that life and decide it was something to destroy?
My phone buzzed.
Daniel.
I didn’t want to answer.
But I did.
“What do you want?””
His voice came through calmly.
“Did you find it?””
I froze.
“You knew I would.””
A pause.
Then:
“I knew Vanessa kept it.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“You’ve been watching us?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because I know Vanessa.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You don’t know her.””
“I knew her before you did.””
The words were designed to hurt.
And they did.
“What are you trying to accomplish?””
“I’m trying to make sure my daughter isn’t raised by someone who doesn’t know the truth.””
“She has a father.””
“You have been playing father.””
The sentence cut deeper than I expected.
I walked away from Vanessa.
“Don’t say that.””
“Why? Because it hurts?””
“Because it’s wrong.””
“Is it?””
I heard the confidence in his voice.
The same confidence that made him dangerous.
“You weren’t there when she was born.””
“I was.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You were invited into the story after it had already started.””
I looked back at Vanessa.
She looked like she was about to break.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“If you cared about Lily, why did you leave?””
Silence.
A real one.
Then:
“Because Vanessa made sure I had no choice.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She knows.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does he mean?””
She shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel continued.
“Ask her why I disappeared.””
“Tell me.””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because I want her to.””
The call ended.
I stood there.
Phone in hand.
The silence afterward felt worse.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What did he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled.
“There’s more.””
I almost laughed.
Of course there was.
There was always more.
“What now?””
She sat down slowly.
“When Daniel came to the hospital, he wasn’t just asking for custody.””
“What was he asking for?””
“He wanted money.””
“You already said that.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not from me.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“From who?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“He wanted me to convince you to give him money.””
I stared at her.
“And you didn’t?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew what he was.””
“Then why hide all of this?””
Her answer came in a whisper.
“Because I thought I could protect Lily without destroying your life.””
I looked at the document.
The photographs.
The letter.
The years of secrets.
“You didn’t protect me.””
“I know.””
“You didn’t protect Lily.””
“I know.””
“You protected the lie.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
That was the first time she admitted it.
No excuse.
No defense.
Just the truth.
I picked up the document.
“I need a DNA test.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Vanessa looked like I had slapped her.
“Ethan.””
“I need to know.””
“She’s your daughter.””
“I know what you’re saying.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t understand. A test won’t change what you are to her.””
“I need the truth.””
She looked at me for a long time.
Then slowly nodded.
“Okay.””
That surprised me.
“Okay?””
“Yes.””
She wiped her tears.
“Do it.””
I stared at her.
“Why are you agreeing?””
“Because maybe after everything…”
She looked upstairs.
“…you deserve something I should have given you six years ago.””
The next morning, I took Lily to school.
I didn’t tell her anything.
I smiled.
I made breakfast.
I acted normal.
But inside, I felt like I was carrying a storm.
When I came home, there was an envelope waiting at the front door.
No stamp.
No address.
Just my name.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of Lily.
Not of Vanessa.
Of me.
Standing outside the hospital six years ago.
And written on the back were seven words:
*You weren’t the first man to hold her.*
I turned the photograph over.
And underneath it was another picture.
One I had never seen.
Daniel.
Holding newborn Lily.
The date was the same day she was born.
My hands started shaking.
May you like
Because for the first time, I wondered:
What else had happened in that hospital room before I arrived?
