Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in the Delivery Room

The photograph stayed in my hand for almost ten minutes.

I didn’t move.

I didn’t breathe normally.

I just stared at it.

Daniel holding Lily.

A newborn baby wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

His hand gently supporting her tiny head.

The date printed in the corner matched the day Lily was born.

My daughter’s birthday.

The day I thought belonged only to me and Vanessa.

The day I thought I became a father.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Daniel.

*Now you understand why Vanessa was afraid.*

I looked at the screen.

Then I deleted the message.

Not because I didn’t care.

Because I cared too much.

Every message from him pulled me deeper into a story where I no longer knew who was telling the truth.

I walked into the house.

Vanessa was standing in the kitchen.

She immediately noticed my face.

“What happened?””

I placed the photograph on the counter.

Her expression collapsed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

Her eyes moved to the picture.

Then away.

“Ethan…”

“Did Daniel hold Lily before I did?””

The silence was enough.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

She sat down.

“I told you he came to the hospital.””

“You said he came to threaten you.””

“He did.””

“Then why was he holding her?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because he was her biological father.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that like it explains everything.””

“It doesn’t.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“When Lily was born, the nurses asked about her father.””

“And?””

“I said I didn’t know.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“You told them that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel had disappeared before that.””

I looked at the photograph.

“But he came back.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About an hour after Lily was born.””

My stomach turned.

“Before I arrived?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

The timeline replayed in my mind.

The phone call Vanessa made.

The message saying she was in labor.

The traffic.

The fifteen minutes I spent searching for parking.

Fifteen minutes.

A lifetime.

“What happened during that hour?””

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“He held her.””

“Only that?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“He cried.””

I stared at her.

“He cried?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel cried?””

She nodded.

“He said he had made a mistake.””

For a moment, I felt something I didn’t expect.

Confusion.

Because the villain in my mind suddenly had a human moment.

Then I remembered the photographs.

The custody papers.

The threat.

The fear.

“What did you do?””

“I told him he needed to leave.””

“And he did?””

“Yes.””

“Just like that?””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He begged.””

“For what?””

“To be part of her life.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you said no?””

“I said he had already abandoned us.””

“And?””

“He got angry.””

“How angry?””

She looked at me.

“Angry enough that the nurses came in.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did he hurt you?””

“No.””

“Did he hurt Lily?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Almost too quickly.

“But?””

Vanessa looked away.

“But he said he would find a way.””

I picked up the photograph again.

“Then why does he have this?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

Her face changed.

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

I pointed at the picture.

“This wasn’t taken by accident. Someone took this.””

Vanessa became silent.

And that silence told me I was right.

“Who took it?””

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

She covered her face.

“Daniel.””

The room became quiet.

“He had someone take pictures?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That he was there.””

I laughed softly.

“So he spent six years collecting proof while you spent six years hiding it.””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“You realize how insane that sounds?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You let me build a life around something I didn’t know was incomplete.””

Her tears fell.

“I know.””

I hated that she kept agreeing.

Because anger needs resistance.

It needs someone to fight back.

But Vanessa wasn’t fighting.

She was drowning.

My phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t Daniel.

It was my lawyer friend, Marcus.

I answered.

“Hey.””

“Ethan, where are you?””

“At home.””

“Are you alone?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“No.””

There was a pause.

“Listen carefully.””

Something about his voice changed.

“What happened?””

“I checked something for you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“The custody consultant you found.””

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“What about him?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“He has been involved in three other custody cases.””

“Okay.””

“But the parents who hired him all had one thing in common.””

“What?””

“They weren’t trying to get custody.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“They were creating pressure.””

I walked toward the window.

“Pressure for what?””

“Settlements. Money. Control.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“So Daniel isn’t helping parents fight.””

“No.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“He’s helping people create leverage.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you need to be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel is doing what I think he’s doing, the custody petition may not be his goal.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then what is?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

“Ethan, have you noticed anything unusual about your finances?””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Anything missing? Transfers? Withdrawals?””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

The old savings account.

The missing money.

The explanation.

“I need to check.””

“Do it.””

I ended the call.

Vanessa immediately knew.

“What did he say?””

I didn’t answer.

I walked to my office.

Opened my laptop.

Logged into our bank account.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard.

I almost didn’t want to look.

Because sometimes the truth you fear is worse than the lie you already know.

I opened the records.

Scrolled back.

One year.

Two years.

Three years.

Then I saw it.

A transfer.

A large amount.

Six months after Lily was born.

The description:

*Private Consultation Services.*

My breathing stopped.

I clicked.

The recipient appeared.

A company name.

But underneath it was a contact person.

Daniel Brooks.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You paid him.””

Her face went pale.

“Ethan…”

“You paid him after Lily was born.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

She didn’t answer.

“How much?””

Her voice cracked.

“Forty thousand dollars.””

I stepped back.

Forty thousand.

Our savings.

Our emergency fund.

The money we had planned to use for our family.

“You lied about the investment.””

“I was scared.””

“You told me we lost it.””

“I didn’t know how else to explain.””

I stared at her.

“Why would you pay him after he left?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw pure fear.

“Because he came back.””

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

The room went silent.

“Two years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he threatened me again.””

“With what?””

Vanessa looked upstairs.

At Lily’s room.

“He said if I didn’t pay him, he would go to court and prove he was Lily’s biological father.””

I shook my head.

“But he is.””

“Yes.””

“Then why were you afraid?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because he had something else.””

“What?””

She reached into the cabinet.

Pulled out another envelope.

A smaller one.

She placed it in front of me.

“I found this after he left.””

I opened it.

Inside was a document.

A DNA test.

My hands froze.

The name at the top was Daniel Brooks.

The second name was Lily Carter.

The result was clear.

*99.99% probability of biological relationship.*

I stared at the page.

I knew this.

I had always known this was possible.

But seeing it made it real.

Then I noticed something else.

A handwritten note attached to the report.

Not from Daniel.

From Vanessa.

Only four words.

*The other test failed.*

I looked up.

“What other test?””

Vanessa’s face turned white.

“I didn’t want you to find that.””

“What other test?””

She started crying.

“Ethan…”

“What other test?””

She whispered:

“The one they did on you.””

My blood ran cold.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“The DNA test Daniel ordered three years ago.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“He already knows the result.””

My voice dropped.

“What result?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t have to.

I already knew.

A terrible possibility formed.

One that changed everything.

If Daniel knew Lily was his daughter…

And he knew something about me…

Then this was never just about custody.

It was about destroying the one thing he could never take from me.

My place in Lily’s life.

Vanessa pushed the final paper toward me.

On the bottom was a note written by Daniel.

*Ask Ethan why he never questioned why the DNA test was ordered in the first place.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Because she knew the question too.

Why had Daniel ordered a DNA test on me?

And what had he discovered?
