Chapter 8: The Test That Changed the Meaning of Father

I held the DNA report in my hands.

But I wasn’t reading it anymore.

I was staring at the sentence Daniel had written.

*Ask Ethan why he never questioned why the DNA test was ordered in the first place.*

A question.

That was all it was.

But it felt like a weapon.

Because suddenly I wasn’t just searching for the truth about Daniel and Vanessa.

I was searching for the truth about myself.

“Why?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked up slowly.

“Why what?””

“Why did Daniel order a DNA test on me?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

That was enough.

She knew.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled.

“Ethan…”

“You knew.””

“I didn’t know the result.””

“But you knew he tested me.””

“Yes.””

I placed the report on the table.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed.

The same answer.

Again.

“You were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“You were afraid of everything except lying to me.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

Not anymore.

“What did he test?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Ethan.””

“What did he test?””

She whispered:

“Whether you were Lily’s biological father.””

The room went silent.

I already knew that was possible.

But hearing it from her felt different.

It felt like someone had taken six years of memories and held them up to a light, searching for cracks.

“And the result?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“He didn’t show me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He only told me he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That you weren’t her biological father.””

The words hit like a punch.

I sat down slowly.

Not because I believed him.

Because I needed to breathe.

Six years.

Six years of being called Daddy.

Six years of bedtime stories.

Six years of school drop-offs.

Six years of scraped knees and first words and little hands holding mine.

A voice in my head whispered:

What if it was all borrowed?

I hated that thought.

I hated Daniel for putting it there.

I hated Vanessa for giving him the opportunity.

“Did you believe him?””

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew you.””

I looked at her.

“That’s not enough.””

“Yes, it is.””

She stepped closer.

“Ethan, biology doesn’t create a father.””

I looked away.

“Don’t say that right now.””

“Why?””

“Because I don’t know what I am right now.””

Her expression broke.

“You are the man who held her when she was sick.””

“You don’t know what I am.””

“You are the man who taught her how to ride a bike.””

“Vanessa.””

“You are the man she looks for when she wakes up scared.””

My eyes closed.

Because every word was true.

And somehow that made everything hurt more.

A father wasn’t supposed to question whether he belonged.

But suddenly, I was.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Tell me you found something.””

His voice was serious.

“I did.””

“What?””

“The DNA test Daniel ordered.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You found it?””

“Not the actual test. The record.””

“Where?””

“Through the lab.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What did it say?””

A pause.

Then:

“Ethan, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Daniel didn’t order one test.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

“He ordered two.””

My stomach dropped.

“Two?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””

I stood.

“What were they?””

“The first one was a paternity test between Daniel and Lily.””

“Which proves he’s her biological father.””

“Yes.””

“And the second?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The second was between you and Lily.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“And?””

Marcus sighed.

“The result was inconclusive.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The sample was damaged.””

“Damaged?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

My mind raced.

“So what does that mean?””

“It means Daniel couldn’t prove anything from that test.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“He lied.””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“He knew the result wasn’t valid.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he tell Vanessa?””

“To scare her.””

I closed my eyes.

The pieces connected.

The custody petition.

The photographs.

The threats.

The money.

Daniel wasn’t building a case.

He was building fear.

But one question remained.

“How did he get my DNA?””

Marcus was quiet.

Then:

“Ethan…”

“What?””

“You need to ask Vanessa.””

I ended the call.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

I turned toward my wife.

“How did Daniel get my DNA?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And this time, I wasn’t angry.

I was exhausted.

“Please.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know what he was doing.””

“What did you give him?””

“Nothing.””

“Then how?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because of Lily.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“When Lily was sick two years ago, we went to the doctor.””

I remembered.

A fever.

A hospital visit.

A terrifying night.

“She needed blood work.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel had access to her medical records.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“And my DNA?””

She looked down.

“The doctor’s office had your information because you were listed as her father.””

I stared at her.

“So he used her records.””

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

“He took something from my daughter to hurt me.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

That was exactly what happened.

For the first time in days, my anger toward Daniel became clear.

Not just anger.

Disgust.

Because this wasn’t a man fighting for a child.

This was a man using a child as a weapon.

That evening, I picked Lily up from school.

I almost didn’t recognize how normal everything looked.

Parents laughing.

Children running.

Backpacks.

Small shoes.

A world where nothing had changed.

Until Lily saw me.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward me.

I caught her.

Held her tightly.

Maybe tighter than usual.

She laughed.

“You’re squeezing me.””

I smiled.

“Sorry.””

She looked at me.

“Are you sad again?””

I forced a smile.

“No.””

She touched my cheek.

“You’re doing the face.””

“What face?””

“The face where you say you’re okay but you’re not.””

I looked at my daughter.

Six years old.

And somehow wiser than most adults.

“Lily.””

“Yeah?””

“No matter what happens…”

I stopped.

Because I almost said something she wasn’t ready to hear.

Instead, I hugged her.

“No matter what happens, I love you.””

She smiled.

“I know.””

The simplicity of her answer almost broke me.

Because she knew.

Not because of blood.

Not because of paperwork.

Because love had been there every day.

That night, after Lily went to bed, Vanessa and I sat across from each other.

No anger.

No shouting.

Just two people surrounded by the consequences of their choices.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

I looked at her.

“I know.””

“No, Ethan.””

Her voice cracked.

“I need you to understand.””

I waited.

“I was wrong.””

The words surprised me.

Because she had apologized before.

But never like this.

“I thought if I controlled the situation, I could protect everyone.””

She wiped her tears.

“But I only made the truth more dangerous.””

I nodded slowly.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“You should have let me choose.””

“I know.””

“What happens now?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“Now we protect Lily.””

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

I opened it.

There was no text.

Only a video.

My heart stopped.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital hallway.

Six years ago.

The camera moved shakily.

A younger Vanessa stood outside a hospital room.

Daniel was facing her.

Their voices were faint but clear.

Daniel said:

“If Ethan finds out, he’ll never forgive you.””

Vanessa answered:

“I know.””

Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.

“But you still need him.””

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Because one thing was obvious.

Daniel had been recording Vanessa.

Collecting secrets.

Waiting.

And then another message appeared.

*Daniel: Ask her what she needed you for.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was already crying.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

I whispered:

“What did you need me for?””

May you like

And for the first time…

Vanessa had no answer.
