Chapter 10: The Woman Who Kept the Secret

Denise stood outside the abandoned building with the metal box in her hands.

For several seconds, nobody inside moved.

The world felt strangely quiet.

No birds.

No wind.

No sound except the faint hum of her car engine.

Marcus stayed near the window, watching her carefully.

“She has the box.””

Brielle looked terrified.

“But why?””

Claire’s face was unreadable.

“Because she knows what’s inside.””

Eleanor held the recorder against her chest.

Her daughter’s voice still echoed in her mind.

Don’t trust Denise.

Twenty years of memories crashed together.

Denise sitting beside her during funeral-like gatherings.

Denise bringing food after Lydia disappeared.

Denise crying with her.

Denise promising that one day, somehow, the truth would come out.

All those years.

All those moments.

Were they real?

The door opened.

Denise walked inside slowly.

She wasn’t running.

She wasn’t hiding.

That frightened Marcus more.

A guilty person ran.

A confident person walked.

“Where is the box?”” Marcus demanded.

Denise looked at him.

Then at Eleanor.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find it this way.””

Eleanor’s voice was barely a whisper.

“You knew.””

Denise closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than a lie.

Brielle stepped forward.

“You knew my mother was alive.””

Denise looked at her.

“Yes.””

Brielle’s face crumpled.

“And you let me believe she left me?””

Denise looked devastated.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you allowed it.””

Denise had no response.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You were in that photograph.””

Denise looked at the picture in Brielle’s hand.

“I know.””

“Why?””

Denise looked toward the recorder.

“Because Lydia needed someone she could trust.””

Claire immediately interrupted.

“She trusted you until she realized you were helping Richard.””

Denise’s face changed.

“I was never helping Richard.””

“Then why does Lydia say not to trust you?””

The question hung in the room.

Denise looked at Eleanor.

“I was hoping she would never have to hear that.””

Eleanor stared.

“Explain.””

Denise slowly placed the metal box on the table.

Then she sat down.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not dangerous.

Not powerful.

Just tired.

“Lydia found out Richard wasn’t only stealing money.””

Marcus frowned.

“What else?””

Denise looked at him.

“He was building something bigger.””

“Like what?””

“Control.””

Nobody spoke.

Denise continued.

“Richard had spent years making everyone dependent on him. The money. The businesses.

The property. Even the family decisions.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“He was our family.””

Denise nodded sadly.

“That’s why it worked.””

Brielle looked away.

“My mother knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell everyone?””

Denise looked at her.

“Because she knew nobody would believe her.””

Marcus looked angry.

“She had proof.””

Denise nodded.

“She did.””

“Then where is it?””

Denise looked at the box.

“Gone.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Denise touched the metal container.

“This isn’t the original box.””

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Then what is it?””

“A distraction.””

The room went silent.

Marcus opened it again.

The documents inside suddenly seemed meaningless.

Claire looked at Denise.

“You switched it.””

Denise nodded.

“Yes.””

Brielle stared.

“Why?””

Denise looked at Eleanor.

“Because Richard was watching.””

Eleanor’s breath caught.

“He was watching you?””

“All of us.””

Denise looked at the floor.

“Lydia knew she couldn’t fight him alone. So she created a plan.””

“What plan?”” Marcus asked.

Denise hesitated.

“A plan where everyone thought she disappeared.””

Eleanor’s eyes widened.

“She chose to leave?””

Denise nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Even if it made sense.

“Why?””

Denise looked at her.

“Because staying meant Brielle would become a weapon against her.””

Brielle wiped her tears.

“What does that mean?””

Denise looked at her.

“Richard knew Lydia’s greatest weakness was you.””

The room became colder.

“He told her if she exposed him, he would make sure she lost custody.””

Brielle whispered:

“He would take me?””

“Yes.””

“And she believed him?””

“She knew him.””

Eleanor looked at the recorder.

“Where is Lydia now?””

Denise didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where?””

Denise looked toward the door.

“She was supposed to come back.””

Eleanor’s heart stopped.

“Supposed to?””

Denise nodded.

“She had a plan.””

“What happened?””

Denise looked at Brielle.

“Richard found out.””

Brielle went pale.

“When?””

“Three days after that photograph.””

Marcus looked confused.

“The photograph where Lydia was alive.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come home?””

Denise whispered:

“Because someone betrayed her.””

Everyone turned.

“Who?”” Eleanor asked.

Denise looked at the recorder.

Then at Claire.

Then finally at Brielle.

“She never knew who.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from inside the metal box.

Marcus opened it quickly.

Hidden beneath the false documents was a small phone.

It was ringing.

The screen showed one word.

*Lydia.*

Eleanor grabbed it.

Her hands shook.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a breath.

A real breath.

A living person.

And then a voice Eleanor had waited twenty years to hear.

“Mom.””

Eleanor collapsed into the chair.

“Lydia?””

The voice broke.

“I’m sorry.””

Tears filled Eleanor’s eyes.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then Lydia whispered:

“Somewhere Richard can’t reach me.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“Lydia, it’s Marcus.””

Silence.

Then a soft sob.

“My little brother.””

Marcus covered his mouth.

But before anyone could say more, Lydia’s voice changed.

Fear returned.

“You need to leave.””

Eleanor stood.

“What?””

“He knows you found the box.””

Marcus looked at Denise.

“Who?””

Lydia whispered:

“The person standing beside you.””

Everyone froze.

Slowly, they looked around the room.

No one moved.

Then the call ended.

And Eleanor realized something terrifying.

Lydia had not said Richard’s name.

May you like

She had said:

The person standing beside you.
