Chapter 12: The Person Lydia Trusted

The photograph on the phone changed everything.

Not because Lydia was alive.

They already knew that.

Because of who stood beside her.

Eleanor stared at the screen.

Her hands trembled.

Marcus looked over her shoulder.

Then stepped back.

“No.””

Brielle covered her mouth.

“That’s impossible.””

Denise whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Claire said nothing.

Because she already knew.

The person beside Lydia in the photograph was Eleanor.

But not the Eleanor standing in front of them.

A younger Eleanor.

Taken years earlier.

A photograph from the past.

Marcus looked confused.

“It’s old.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why send it now?””

Nobody answered.

Then Claire noticed something.

“Look closer.””

Eleanor zoomed in.

The photo wasn’t just a family picture.

There was writing behind them.

A message.

Marcus read it aloud.

“Family protects family.””

Brielle shook her head.

“That’s Richard’s handwriting.””

Denise immediately said:

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked frightened.

“Richard doesn’t write like that.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then whose handwriting is it?””

Denise didn’t answer.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Denise.””

The older woman looked away.

And that was enough.

Marcus noticed.

“You know.””

Denise closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Whose?””

Denise whispered:

“Lydia’s.””

Nobody moved.

Eleanor looked back at the picture.

Her daughter had written those words.

Family protects family.

But why?

Claire stepped closer.

“Because Lydia knew the truth would destroy everyone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“We keep saying that.””

He looked at Claire.

“But nobody tells us what the truth is.””

Claire looked at Eleanor.

“Are you ready?””

Eleanor thought about the last twenty years.

Every birthday without Lydia.

Every holiday.

Every empty chair.

Every night wondering.

“Yes.””

Claire nodded.

Then she reached into her coat again.

This time, she removed a small envelope.

“This is the original letter.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“You had it?””

Claire nodded.

“I was supposed to deliver it when Lydia returned.””

Eleanor reached for it.

But before she opened it, Denise spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

Denise looked at Eleanor.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Marcus sighed.

“Another secret?””

Denise ignored him.

“Lydia didn’t disappear because Richard wanted her gone.””

Eleanor looked confused.

“Then why?””

Denise’s eyes filled.

“Because she discovered who helped him.””

The room became silent.

“And she was protecting that person.””

Brielle frowned.

“Why would she protect someone who betrayed her?””

Denise looked at her.

“Because that person was her daughter.””

Brielle froze.

“What?””

Eleanor looked horrified.

“No.””

Denise continued.

“Lydia found out someone had been secretly giving Richard information.””

Marcus stared.

“Who?””

Denise looked at Brielle.

The young woman stepped back.

“No.””

“That’s why Lydia left.””

Brielle shook her head.

“I never helped him.””

Denise nodded.

“I know.””

Everyone went silent.

“Then why say that?””

Denise looked at Eleanor.

“Because Richard made Brielle believe she did.””

Brielle began crying.

“He manipulated me.””

“Yes.””

Eleanor moved toward her.

“My baby…”

Brielle shook her head.

“I remembered things wrong.””

Claire nodded.

“He used fear.””

Marcus looked furious.

“He used an eight-year-old child.””

“Yes.””

The room fell silent.

Then Eleanor finally opened the letter.

The paper unfolded.

Her eyes moved across the first line.

And immediately, she began crying.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does it say?””

Eleanor could barely speak.

“It starts with…”

She stopped.

Because the first sentence wasn’t addressed to her.

It was addressed to Brielle.

*“My daughter, if you are reading this, I need you to know something: you did not betray me.””*

Brielle broke down.

Eleanor kept reading.

Her voice shaking.

But before she reached the next line, a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The front door of the building slammed open.

A shadow stood there.

And a familiar voice said:

“Enough secrets.””

Richard walked inside.

But he wasn’t alone.

Someone stood behind him.

Someone Eleanor never expected to see.

May you like

Someone she thought had been gone for twenty years.

Lydia.
