The Note Behind the Flames / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Box Under the Garden

The next morning, Eleanor returned to the garden behind her house.

The birthday decorations had been removed.

The tables were gone.

The music was silent.

But the fire pit remained exactly where it had been.

A reminder of the moment everything changed.

Marcus stood beside her.

Neither of them had slept.

The note from Lydia sat untouched on the kitchen table.

Not because they didn’t want answers.

Because they were terrified of what those answers might reveal.

Brielle arrived twenty minutes later.

She looked exhausted.

No makeup.

No designer dress.

No attitude.

Just a daughter carrying years of fear.

Eleanor opened the door.

“Come in.””

Brielle hesitated.

“Are you angry?””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Yes.””

Brielle nodded.

“I understand.””

“But I’m more hurt that you carried this alone.””

That made Brielle cry.

“I was scared.””

Eleanor pulled her into a hug.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

Only family remained.

Marcus watched quietly.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Eleanor immediately noticed.

“What is it?””

Marcus ended the call.

“The security company.””

“What happened?””

He looked toward the backyard.

“Someone was here last night.””

Brielle went pale.

“The box.””

They rushed outside.

Behind the house was a small garden Lydia had planted years ago.

A place nobody visited anymore.

Brielle walked slowly toward a large oak tree.

“She told me to remember this.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Remember what?””

“She said secrets grow where people stop looking.””

Eleanor touched the tree.

Then noticed something.

A patch of disturbed soil.

Someone had already dug there.

Marcus knelt down.

“The box is gone.””

Brielle covered her mouth.

“No.””

Eleanor looked at the empty hole.

Twenty years of waiting.

Twenty years of hoping.

And once again, the truth had disappeared.

Then Marcus noticed something beneath the dirt.

A small piece of metal.

He pulled it out.

A broken lock.

But attached to it was a piece of paper.

Eleanor took it carefully.

Her eyes widened.

“What does it say?””

She unfolded it.

Only three words were written.

Three words in Lydia’s handwriting.

*“He knows everything.””*

Brielle stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

Brielle shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But Eleanor noticed something.

A tiny detail.

Something nobody else saw.

The handwriting wasn’t old.

The ink wasn’t faded.

This message wasn’t from twenty years ago.

It was recent.

Someone had written it last night.

Eleanor slowly looked toward the house.

Her voice dropped.

“Someone came here after we found the photograph.””

Marcus followed her gaze.

“Someone who knew.””

Brielle whispered:

“Someone who is watching us.””

Then Eleanor’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

Her hands began trembling.

Marcus looked over.

“What does it say?””

Eleanor stared at the screen.

Then slowly read it aloud.

*“If you open Lydia’s note, you will lose another daughter.””*

Brielle screamed:

“Don’t!””

But it was already too late.

Because the message had one final line.

A name.

May you like

The name of the person who sent it.

And Eleanor recognized it immediately.
