Chapter 9: The Face in the Photograph

Eleanor couldn’t breathe.

The photograph trembled between her fingers.

For twenty years, she had imagined every possible reason her daughter vanished.

A stranger.

An accident.

A desperate escape.

But never this.

Never the person standing beside Lydia in that picture.

Marcus noticed her expression.

“Mom?””

She didn’t answer.

“Who is it?””

Eleanor looked up.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“It can’t be.””

Brielle stepped closer.

“Who?””

Eleanor handed the photograph to Marcus.

He looked down.

Then froze.

Because standing beside Lydia was not Richard.

Not a stranger.

Not someone from the past.

It was someone they had trusted.

Someone who had spent years comforting them.

Someone who had cried beside Eleanor when Lydia disappeared.

Marcus whispered:

“Denise.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

She took the photograph.

“My mother trusted her.””

“She did,” Claire said.

“Then why is she with her?””

Nobody answered.

The photograph showed Lydia and Denise outside an old building.

The same building they were standing in.

But that wasn’t what terrified them.

It was the date written on the bottom.

The picture was taken three days after Lydia was supposedly gone.

Eleanor sat down.

“She was alive.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

Claire looked away.

“Yes.””

His anger exploded.

“You knew my sister was alive?””

“I knew she survived that night.””

“Where was she?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where?””

Claire looked at Eleanor.

“She made me promise.””

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“Another promise.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“She wanted you to hate her if it kept you safe.””

The words hurt more than any accusation.

Eleanor shook her head.

“No mother leaves her child without a reason.””

Claire nodded.

“Exactly.””

Brielle stared at the photograph.

“What happened after this picture?””

Claire looked at her.

“Your mother discovered Richard’s secret.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“We already know about the money.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

The room went quiet.

“That was only the beginning.””

Eleanor looked confused.

“What else?””

Claire walked toward the desk.

She picked up the recorder.

“Lydia recorded everything.””

Marcus looked at the device.

“Why?””

“Because she knew nobody would believe her.””

Brielle whispered:

“What was she trying to prove?””

Claire pressed the recorder into Eleanor’s hand.

“Listen.””

Eleanor hesitated.

Then pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice.

Lydia.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“If you’re hearing this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Her daughter’s voice.

After twenty years.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Brielle began crying.

The recording continued.

“Mom, if this reaches you, please understand something.””

A pause.

“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.””

Eleanor’s tears fell.

“I left because someone I loved was willing to destroy everyone to protect his secret.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

Then at the recorder.

Lydia continued.

“Richard knows about the account. He knows about the documents. But what he doesn’t know is that I found the original evidence.””

A sound came through the recording.

Like someone entering the room.

Lydia’s breathing changed.

Then she whispered:

“If anything happens to me, the person who helps him will be the last person you suspect.””

The recording crackled.

Then Lydia said one final sentence.

A sentence that made Eleanor’s blood turn cold.

“Don’t trust Denise.””

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

Nobody spoke.

Brielle stared at the floor.

“No.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“But Denise brought us here.””

Claire looked at the door.

“That’s what makes her dangerous.””

A noise interrupted them.

A car engine outside.

Everyone froze.

Marcus moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“What?””

Eleanor stood.

“What is it?””

Marcus looked outside.

A vehicle was parked near the road.

The driver’s door opened.

Someone stepped out.

Someone carrying a familiar object.

The metal box.

Claire whispered:

“He found us.””

Brielle backed away.

“Who?””

Marcus stared through the window.

May you like

Then said:

“Denise.””
