Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The question hung between them.
“What did you just say?””
Amara tightened her fingers around the plate of food.
The little girl looked from Damon to Vanessa and back again. She could feel the change in the air, even if she didn’t understand it.
A few seconds earlier, everyone had been watching her because she was the poor child who reached for a piece of cake.
Now everyone was watching because the billionaire in front of her looked terrified.
Damon had faced angry investors.
He had stood in front of cameras during scandals.
He had walked into boardrooms where people twice his age tried to destroy everything he built.
He had never felt this powerless.
Not until a seven-year-old girl spoke a sentence that reopened a door he had spent years trying to lock.
“My mommy said never let a man named Damon find us,” Amara repeated softly.
Damon swallowed.
“Why?””
Amara looked down at the pendant.
Her thumb rubbed against the engraved family crest.
“She said some people would take it away from me.””
“Who?””
The question came out too quickly.
Too urgently.
Amara flinched.
Damon immediately softened his voice.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.””
The girl studied him carefully.
Then she whispered, “Mommy said rich people can make bad things disappear.””
The words hit him harder than he expected.
Because they sounded like fear.
Not imagination.
Not a child’s random warning.
Fear passed down from someone who had been running.
Damon looked over his shoulder.
Vanessa was still standing near the dessert table.
But she was no longer the powerful socialite who had insulted a child moments ago.
She looked like someone trapped.
Someone who had just seen a secret walk into the room.
Damon stood slowly.
“Vanessa.””
The woman’s eyes snapped toward him.
Several guests noticed the tension immediately.
Vanessa forced a small laugh.
“Damon, darling, I think this has become a little unnecessary.””
“Unnecessary?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The people who knew him understood that was when Damon Cross was the most dangerous.
Vanessa glanced at Amara.
Then quickly looked away.
“You’re making assumptions because of a necklace.””
Damon stared at her.
“A family crest isn’t just a necklace.””
Vanessa’s lips parted slightly.
She recovered quickly.
“You’ve had a long night. Maybe you’re seeing connections that aren’t there.””
Damon stepped closer.
“Where did you see that crest before?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
The garden fell silent around them.
A wealthy businessman nearby pretended not to listen while clearly listening.
A woman holding a champagne glass slowly lowered it.
The server stood frozen with the empty cake tray.
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew.””
His voice became sharper.
The woman looked around at the audience, suddenly aware that the entire room was watching.
She lowered her voice.
“Damon, not here.””
That sentence confirmed everything.
Because innocent people asked questions.
Guilty people asked for privacy.
Damon looked at Amara.
The girl was still holding the plate he gave her.
She looked between the adults, confused.
He hated that.
He hated that she was caught in the middle of something created by people much older than her.
He crouched beside her again.
“Amara.””
She looked at him.
“Can I ask you something?””
She nodded.
“Where is your mother?””
The little girl’s expression changed.
The confidence disappeared.
Her small shoulders lowered.
“She’s sick.””
The answer was quiet.
Damon felt his chest tighten.
“Where is she?””
Amara hesitated.
“I’m not supposed to tell.””
“Why not?””
“Because she said if anyone finds us, we have to leave.””
Damon looked at the pendant again.
A thousand thoughts raced through his mind.
Seven years.
Seven years since the night everything changed.
Seven years since the woman he loved disappeared.
Seven years since he was told she had left without saying goodbye.
He remembered the last conversation.
The anger.
The misunderstanding.
The words they couldn’t take back.
He remembered calling her phone.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Until the number stopped working.
Everyone told him the same thing.
“She chose to leave.””
“She didn’t want you anymore.””
“She moved on.””
But Damon had never believed it completely.
Because there was one thing he never understood.
Why would she leave the family crest behind?
Why would she disappear without taking anything?
Why would she vanish like someone running for her life?
Now he had an answer.
Maybe she hadn’t left.
Maybe someone made sure she had no choice.
Damon turned toward Vanessa.
The woman immediately shook her head.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Destroy your own life because a child has a necklace.””
Damon stared at her.
“You know exactly whose child she is.””
Vanessa said nothing.
The silence was louder than any confession.
Then a voice came from behind them.
“Mr. Cross?””
Damon turned.
His security director, Marcus, stood nearby.
The man had been watching from a distance.
He understood when Damon needed him.
And right now, Damon needed him.
“Take everyone away from this area,” Damon said.
Marcus looked at Amara.
Then at Vanessa.
“Everyone?””
Damon nodded.
“Everyone except her.””
He pointed toward Vanessa.
The wealthy woman’s expression changed.
“You can’t be serious.””
“I’m completely serious.””
“You’re embarrassing yourself.””
Damon stepped closer.
“No. I think someone else did that years ago.””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
For a moment, the arrogant woman returned.
The woman who believed money could protect her.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
Damon held her gaze.
“Then explain it.””
She didn’t.
Instead, she looked at Amara.
And that small movement made Damon’s stomach drop.
Because Vanessa wasn’t looking at the child with anger.
She was looking at her with fear.
“What happened to her mother?”” Damon asked.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Some questions should stay buried.””
The sentence was barely above a whisper.
But Damon heard it.
And so did Amara.
The little girl looked up.
“Do you know my mommy?””
Vanessa froze.
For the first time, she looked genuinely shaken.
“I…”
She stopped.
Damon noticed.
Every hesitation.
Every change in expression.
Every tiny reaction.
He had built his empire by noticing details other people ignored.
And Vanessa Hale was revealing everything without saying anything.
“You know her,” Damon said.
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
“You know her.””
“Damon—”
“What happened seven years ago?””
The woman’s face went pale again.
A breeze moved through the garden.
The white tablecloths fluttered.
The chandeliers hanging above them swayed slightly.
Everything looked beautiful.
Perfect.
Like nothing terrible could ever happen in a place this expensive.
But Damon knew better.
Some of the darkest secrets were hidden in the most beautiful places.
Amara suddenly tugged gently on his sleeve.
Damon looked down.
“Are you my daddy?””
The question was so quiet that only he heard it.
But it broke something inside him.
For years, he had imagined finding the woman he lost.
He had imagined an apology.
An explanation.
A second chance.
He had never imagined standing in a garden with a child who carried his family’s crest asking him a question he was terrified to answer.
Damon opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he didn’t know.
Because he was afraid.
Because if the answer was yes, then seven years of his life had been stolen.
And if the answer was no, then why did that pendant belong to his family?
Before he could respond, Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
Her voice was low.
“Damon, you need to listen to me.””
He turned.
“What?””
Her eyes moved toward Amara.
Then toward the crowd.
Then back to him.
“Your daughter was never supposed to be found.””
The words landed like a gunshot.
Amara stopped moving.
Damon felt the world disappear around him.
“Say that again.””
Vanessa looked terrified now.
Not of him.
Of what would happen if the truth came out.
“Damon, you don’t understand. If she’s here, then they already know.””
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She looked past him.
Toward the entrance of the garden.
Toward a man standing in the shadows near the gates.
A man Damon had never seen before.
But Vanessa recognized him immediately.
Her face lost all color.
May you like
And then she whispered the words that made Damon’s blood run cold.
“They found her.””
