Chapter 8: The Man Who Betrayed Elena
The room became silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came when everyone was waiting for something terrible to be confirmed.
Damon stared at the photograph on the wall.
Elena.
Alive.
Standing beside Adrian Vale.
A folder in her hands.
Her expression serious.
Focused.
Determined.
The same woman everyone had spent seven years describing as a victim.
But now Damon saw something else.
A woman who had been fighting.
And standing beside her was the man who claimed he came to reveal the truth.
Adrian.
The man who brought him the photograph.
The man who said he wanted justice.
Damon slowly turned around.
“Explain.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Damon walked toward him.
“Explain.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“It’s not what it looks like.””
Damon almost smiled.
He hated that sentence.
Because every person who had betrayed him seemed to use it.
Vanessa.
His mother.
Now Adrian.
“Everyone says that right before they tell me another lie.””
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“You told him?””
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“He deserved the truth.””
Adrian looked around the room.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.””
Damon stepped closer.
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I was trying to protect Elena.””
“By doing what?””
The question hung there.
Adrian looked away.
And Damon knew.
He knew before the answer came.
“You betrayed her.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Damon noticed.
“Tell me.””
Adrian took a slow breath.
“Seven years ago, Elena came to me because she trusted me.””
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because I was one of the few people your father couldn’t control.””
A bitter laugh escaped Damon.
“And now?””
Adrian didn’t respond.
Damon continued.
“Now I’m supposed to believe you were the hero?””
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
Adrian looked exhausted.
“I’m not the hero.””
For the first time, he sounded honest.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Damon pointed toward the photograph.
“My daughter spent seven years hiding because of your mistakes.””
Adrian looked at Amara.
Pain crossed his face.
“I know.””
Damon stopped.
The admission was unexpected.
“You know?””
Adrian nodded.
“I’ve known where she was.””
The room froze.
Damon stared.
“What?””
Adrian looked at him.
“I knew Elena had a daughter.””
“You knew where they were?””
“Yes.””
Damon’s anger exploded.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Why?””
His voice shook the room.
“Why did you let me spend seven years believing I lost them?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Because I thought telling you would get them killed.””
Damon stepped back.
The answer sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a justification.
Everyone claimed they were protecting someone.
But Damon was done accepting that.
“You all keep saying you protected me.””
He looked around the room.
“My father.””
“My mother.””
“Vanessa.””
“Now you.””
His voice became quieter.
“But nobody protected my daughter.””
Amara looked at him.
Damon immediately softened.
He didn’t want her to feel responsible.
He knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t have to say sorry all the time.””
The innocent honesty hurt.
Damon smiled sadly.
“Maybe I do.””
Amara looked toward Adrian.
“Did you know my mommy?””
Adrian’s expression broke.
“Yes.””
“Was she nice?””
The question surprised him.
A small smile appeared.
“She was the bravest person I ever knew.””
Amara nodded.
“She said that about my daddy.””
Damon looked at her.
“What did she say?””
Amara smiled faintly.
“She said my daddy was brave too. But sometimes he tried to carry everything alone.””
Damon looked away.
Because Elena still knew him.
Even after seven years.
Even from a distance.
She knew exactly who he was.
Adrian watched them.
Then quietly said:
“She loved you until the end.””
Damon looked up.
“The end?””
Nobody moved.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian hesitated.
Damon stood.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked toward the locked cabinets around the room.
“Elena disappeared because she was close to exposing everything.””
“Everything about my father?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Adrian swallowed.
“And because someone inside your family was helping him.””
Damon looked at Evelyn.
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You know I wasn’t involved.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Adrian looked at Damon.
“Because the person who helped Richard wasn’t your mother.””
Damon froze.
“Then who?””
Adrian reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
Damon stared.
“What is that?””
“The reason Elena disappeared.””
He placed it on the desk.
“This was recorded six months ago.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“Six months?””
Adrian nodded.
“Elena found it.””
Damon pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A voice Damon recognized instantly.
His father.
Richard Cross.
Even though the man had been dead for years.
Damon stopped breathing.
*“If you’re hearing this, then Elena found the files.””*
The room went still.
The recording continued.
*“You need to understand something. Damon cannot know the truth. Not because he won’t forgive us. Because he will try to fix it.””*
Damon’s eyes widened.
His father knew him.
Even in a recording.
*“My son has always believed he can save everyone.””*
Damon looked down.
The words hurt because they were true.
The recording continued.
*“That weakness is why he must be protected from this.””*
A pause.
Then another voice.
A woman’s voice.
Damon’s face changed.
Because he recognized it too.
Evelyn.
But younger.
More afraid.
*“Richard, this has gone too far.””*
The recording continued.
*“You promised Elena would be left alone.””*
Richard responded.
*“I promised nothing.””*
Damon’s stomach twisted.
The recording played on.
*“The child is the problem.””*
The room went cold.
Amara moved closer to Damon.
He immediately reached for her hand.
Richard’s voice continued.
*“If Damon knows he has a daughter, he will destroy everything trying to find them.””*
Evelyn’s voice broke through.
*“She is an innocent child.””*
Richard answered coldly.
*“All children become leverage eventually.””*
Damon closed his eyes.
He couldn’t listen.
But he had to.
Because this was the truth.
The recording continued.
Then came Elena’s voice.
Quiet.
Terrified.
*“Richard, please.””*
A pause.
*“Don’t make me choose between my daughter and Damon.””*
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Damon stared at the device.
His father’s voice echoed in his mind.
All children become leverage eventually.
A monster disguised as a father.
A man who used family as a weapon.
Damon slowly looked at Evelyn.
“You knew.””
She started crying.
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
“I didn’t know he would go that far.””
Damon looked at Adrian.
“And you?””
Adrian looked away.
“I found out too late.””
“Everyone found out too late.””
Damon’s voice cracked.
“Except me.””
The pain in that sentence silenced everyone.
Then Amara suddenly looked toward the hallway.
Damon noticed.
“What is it?””
She frowned.
“I hear something.””
Everyone turned.
At first, nothing.
Then—
A sound.
A phone ringing.
Not Damon’s.
Not Vanessa’s.
Not anyone in the room.
It came from inside one of the locked drawers.
Evelyn looked terrified.
“That’s impossible.””
Damon walked toward the desk.
“What?””
Evelyn whispered:
“That drawer belonged to your father.””
The ringing continued.
Damon opened it.
Inside was an old phone.
The screen was cracked.
But it was still on.
And there was one unread message.
Damon picked it up.
The sender’s name appeared.
His blood ran cold.
Because it was a name he thought he would never see again.
*Elena.*
The message contained only one sentence.
*Damon, don’t trust anyone in that room.*
Before Damon could speak, another message appeared.
This one arrived immediately.
*I’m closer than you think.*
Damon looked up.
Everyone was watching him.
And then the front door of the estate slammed shut.
A woman’s voice came from the hallway.
A voice Damon knew better than his own.
“Damon.””
His entire body froze.
May you like
Because after seven years of believing she was gone…
Elena was standing there.
