Chapter 6: The Mother Behind The Lie
“Your mother.””
The words did not sound real.
Damon stared at Vanessa.
The garden lights reflected in her terrified eyes.
For a moment, he thought he had misunderstood.
Because the woman who raised him had always been the safest person in his world.
His mother, Evelyn Cross.
The woman who held his hand when he was a child.
The woman who sat beside him during his father’s funeral.
The woman who told him he deserved happiness after Elena disappeared.
The woman who cried with him when he believed he had lost the person he loved.
No.
Not her.
Damon shook his head slowly.
“No.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I wish it wasn’t true.””
Damon’s grip tightened around Elena’s letter.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You lied for seven years.””
The accusation landed.
Vanessa accepted it.
Because she knew she deserved it.
Damon stepped closer.
“You expect me to believe my own mother destroyed my family?””
Vanessa’s voice was quiet.
“I expect you to read the letter.””
He looked down.
The paper suddenly felt heavier.
Like it contained a truth he wasn’t ready to carry.
Damon unfolded it again.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
The woman whose voice he could still hear in his memories.
The woman who used to write him notes and hide them inside his jacket before important meetings.
The woman who knew exactly how to make him smile.
His eyes moved across the page.
*Damon,*
*I don’t know if you will ever forgive me for disappearing. I don’t know if you will believe what I’m about to tell you.*
*But I need you to understand one thing. I never left because I stopped loving you.*
Damon stopped.
His breath caught.
The sentence he had waited seven years to hear.
Not from a stranger.
Not from a lawyer.
Not from someone explaining her actions.
From her.
*I left because I learned the truth about your family.*
Damon continued reading.
*Your father was involved in things you never knew about. But he wasn’t the only one. Evelyn knew everything.*
His eyes lifted.
Evelyn.
His mother.
The name felt wrong.
Impossible.
*When she found out I was pregnant, she came to see me. She told me I had two choices.*
Damon’s fingers tightened.
*Give up the baby and disappear quietly. Or watch your entire life collapse.*
A cold feeling moved through him.
Amara was standing nearby.
The child who had spent her life hiding.
The child whose existence had been treated like a problem.
Damon kept reading.
*I thought she was threatening me because she hated me. I was wrong. She was afraid.*
He frowned.
Afraid?
Why would his mother be afraid?
*Your father had secrets even Evelyn didn’t know how to escape from. She believed protecting the family meant protecting the lie.*
Damon looked at Robert.
The older man avoided his eyes.
Interesting.
For the first time, Robert looked uncomfortable.
Damon noticed.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
But nobody had all of it.
Or maybe everyone had been protecting their own version.
He continued.
*Damon, if you ever find Amara, please don’t blame her for what happened. She was the only innocent person in all of this.*
His eyes moved toward the little girl.
She was watching him carefully.
Waiting.
Like she was afraid he would disappear too.
Damon lowered the letter.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Where is my mother?””
Vanessa hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Damon’s expression hardened.
“Where is she?””
“She’s at home.””
“Take me there.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“Damon—”
“Take me there.””
His voice wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
The authority behind it stopped everyone.
Robert stepped forward.
“That’s not a good idea.””
Damon turned.
“You don’t get to decide what I do anymore.””
Robert studied him.
“You think confronting Evelyn will give you answers.””
“It will.””
“You don’t know what she’ll do.””
Damon laughed quietly.
“What else can she take from me?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
She had already taken seven years.
A childhood.
A first step.
A birthday.
A thousand moments he would never get back.
Damon looked at Amara.
“Do you want to come with me?””
The question surprised everyone.
Especially Amara.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“My mommy said to be careful.””
Damon nodded.
“She was right.””
Amara looked at him.
“But she also said…”
She stopped.
“What?””
The girl touched the pendant.
“She said if I ever met you, I should know you’re not the bad man.””
Damon felt something break inside him.
Because Elena had believed in him.
Even when he wasn’t there.
Even when everyone else controlled the story.
She still believed he would come.
He crouched beside Amara.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came out naturally.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as a businessman.
As a father.
“For what?””
“For not finding you sooner.””
Amara studied his face.
Then she said something so simple it hurt.
“You didn’t know.””
Damon looked away.
Because children should not be the ones offering forgiveness.
But she did.
Marcus approached quietly.
“Sir.””
Damon stood.
“What?””
“We need to leave.””
Damon nodded.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Bring your car.””
Vanessa blinked.
“Now?””
“Yes.””
She looked nervous.
“Damon…”
“I spent seven years waiting for someone to tell me the truth.””
He held Elena’s letter.
“I’m done waiting.””
The drive was silent.
The city lights passed outside the windows.
Amara sat beside Damon in the back seat.
At first, she kept her distance.
Then, slowly, she moved closer.
Not enough to touch him.
Just enough to know he was there.
Damon noticed.
He didn’t say anything.
He didn’t want to scare away the fragile trust forming between them.
After several minutes, Amara spoke.
“Are you really my daddy?””
The question came again.
This time, Damon was prepared.
But being prepared didn’t make it easier.
“I think I am.””
She looked at him.
“Think?””
He smiled sadly.
“I want to be honest with you.””
“Why?””
“Because someone lied to me for a long time.””
Amara nodded.
“My mommy hated lies.””
Damon looked out the window.
“She was smart.””
“She was scared too.””
The answer surprised him.
“You knew?””
Amara nodded.
“Sometimes she cried when she thought I was sleeping.””
Damon looked down.
“Did she talk about me?””
“All the time.””
His heart tightened.
“What did she say?””
Amara smiled faintly.
“She said you laughed too loudly.””
Damon almost laughed.
A real laugh.
The first one in what felt like years.
“She said that?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
“She said you always forgot where you put your keys.””
Damon shook his head.
“That sounds like her.””
Amara smiled.
For a few seconds, everything felt normal.
A father and daughter sitting together.
No secrets.
No fear.
No enemies.
Then Vanessa’s voice came from the front seat.
“We’re here.””
The car stopped.
Damon looked outside.
The Cross family estate stood before him.
The same place where he grew up.
The same place where his mother had hugged him.
The same place where he believed he was safe.
Now it looked different.
Older.
Colder.
Like a beautiful house hiding something rotten inside.
The front door opened before they reached it.
Evelyn Cross stood there.
Elegant as always.
Perfectly dressed.
Silver hair styled neatly.
A woman who looked impossible to defeat.
Until she saw Amara.
Her entire expression changed.
The color drained from her face.
For the first time in Damon’s life, he saw his mother afraid.
Not worried.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
Her eyes moved to the pendant.
Then to Damon.
Then back to the little girl.
And she whispered the words that confirmed everything.
“No…”
Damon stopped.
Evelyn took one step backward.
“She’s alive.””
Damon’s voice became cold.
“Who?””
His mother looked at him.
Her lips trembled.
May you like
And then she said the name Damon had been waiting seven years to hear.
“Elena.””
