Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
Damon couldn’t move.
The garden lights reflected off the man’s silver watch.
The orchestra continued playing somewhere in the distance.
Guests continued laughing at tables covered with white linen.
But Damon heard none of it.
Because the dead man standing in front of him was impossible.
“Robert Vale.””
The name left Damon’s mouth like a question.
Like saying it might make the illusion disappear.
The older man smiled.
“That’s right.””
Damon stared.
“No.””
Robert tilted his head.
“You always were stubborn.””
A lifetime of memories rushed through Damon’s mind.
Robert Vale.
His father’s closest business partner.
The man who attended every family event.
The man who taught Damon how to read contracts before he was old enough to drive.
The man who stood beside Richard Cross during the company’s greatest expansion.
And the man who was reported dead six years ago after a private plane accident.
Damon remembered the funeral.
The empty casket.
The photographs.
The speeches.
He remembered his father standing silently, saying almost nothing.
At the time, Damon thought grief had made Richard cold.
Now he wondered if his father had simply been hiding another secret.
“How are you alive?””
Robert smiled faintly.
“Not the most important question.””
Damon stepped forward.
“It is to me.””
Robert looked around the garden.
“So much anger.””
“Answer me.””
The older man sighed.
“You’ve become exactly like your father.””
The sentence hit Damon harder than he expected.
Because it wasn’t an insult.
It sounded like an observation.
And he hated how much it disturbed him.
Damon pointed toward Amara.
“Why do you know about her?””
Robert looked at the little girl.
His expression changed.
Not kindness.
Not guilt.
Something colder.
Recognition.
“I know more about her than you do.””
Damon immediately moved between them.
“You don’t go near her.””
Robert raised his hands slightly.
“Relax.””
The calmness made Damon more suspicious.
People who were dangerous rarely looked dangerous.
They looked comfortable.
They looked reasonable.
They smiled while destroying lives.
“I’m not here to hurt the child.””
“Then why are you here?””
Robert looked at Vanessa.
The woman lowered her eyes.
That tiny reaction told Damon everything.
They had a history.
“You knew he was coming,” Damon said.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Damon’s jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
“I didn’t invite him.””
“But you expected him.””
Silence.
Another answer.
Damon looked at Adrian.
“And you?””
Adrian looked at Robert with hatred.
“I came because I knew he would come.””
Robert smiled.
“Still angry after all these years, Adrian?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You destroyed enough lives.””
Robert’s expression remained calm.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
“Do you?””
The two men stared at each other.
Damon noticed something.
A history.
A war that started long before tonight.
He turned to Robert.
“What happened to Elena?””
The smile disappeared.
Only slightly.
But Damon saw it.
Everyone else might have missed it.
Damon didn’t.
The question mattered.
Robert looked at him.
“You still love her.””
It wasn’t a question.
Damon’s hands curled into fists.
“Where is she?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Where is Elena?””
The older man looked at Amara.
“She was always stronger than people gave her credit for.””
Damon’s heart raced.
“You know where she is.””
Robert’s silence confirmed it.
A thousand emotions hit him at once.
Anger.
Relief.
Fear.
Hope.
Hope was the most dangerous one.
Because hope could destroy a person faster than hatred.
“She’s alive.””
The words came out before Damon could stop them.
Robert didn’t deny it.
Damon closed his eyes for a moment.
Seven years.
Seven years of believing she was gone.
Seven years of carrying anger toward a woman who might have been fighting just to survive.
“Where is she?””
Robert looked at the envelope in Damon’s hand.
“You read the letter.””
Damon looked down.
“Yes.””
“Then you know she was trying to expose your father.””
“My father is dead.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you were supposed to be dead.””
A small smile returned.
“Everyone believes what they’re told.””
Damon stared.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your family built an empire on secrets.””
The words made the air feel heavier.
Damon looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
He looked at Adrian.
He looked furious.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except him.
And that was becoming the most painful part.
“My entire life,” Damon said quietly, “everyone around me knew things I didn’t.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could argue.
Robert stepped closer.
“You were protected.””
Damon laughed.
A bitter sound.
“Protected?””
He pointed toward Amara.
“From knowing I had a daughter?””
Robert’s face hardened slightly.
“You were protected from becoming a target.””
“I became one anyway.””
“That was because Elena made a mistake.””
Damon froze.
The words were so cold that even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“What did you say?””
Robert didn’t blink.
“She trusted the wrong people.””
Damon’s voice dropped.
“Be careful.””
The warning was clear.
Robert noticed.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then accept all of it.””
The older man looked at Amara.
“Your daughter exists because Elena discovered what Richard and I were doing.””
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
“You and my father.””
“Yes.””
“What were you doing?””
Robert looked around the beautiful charity gala.
The expensive decorations.
The wealthy guests.
The cameras.
Then he smiled.
“This.””
Damon frowned.
“What?””
“Charity.””
The word felt wrong.
Robert continued.
“You think these events are about helping people.””
Damon didn’t answer.
“Sometimes they are.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Sometimes they are about hiding where money comes from.””
Damon felt sick.
His own charity event.
His own foundation.
His own name on the building.
All suddenly felt unfamiliar.
“You’re saying my father used charity money?””
“I’m saying your father knew how to make dirty money look clean.””
Damon shook his head.
“No.””
Robert studied him.
“You still want to believe he was a good man.””
Damon didn’t respond.
Because he did.
Because some part of him needed that to be true.
Robert noticed.
“That’s why Elena was dangerous.””
Damon looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she didn’t care about your family name.””
“She loved me.””
Robert’s expression changed.
For the first time, there was something close to respect.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“She loved you enough to risk everything.””
Damon looked down at Amara.
The little girl was quiet.
Too quiet.
He hated that she had to hear these things.
He knelt beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“My mommy said grown-ups keep secrets because they’re scared.””
Damon swallowed.
“She was right.””
Amara looked at him.
“Are you scared?””
The question caught him off guard.
He almost said no.
The old Damon would have.
The man who built an empire.
The man who never showed weakness.
But he looked at this child.
His child.
And he answered honestly.
“Yes.””
Amara tilted her head.
“Why?””
Damon looked toward Robert.
“Because I lost something important once.””
A small pause.
“And I don’t want to lose it again.””
For the first time, Amara reached out.
Her tiny hand touched his.
Damon looked down.
The gesture was small.
But it felt like the beginning of something he had missed for seven years.
Then Robert spoke.
“Damon.””
He looked up.
Robert held out another envelope.
This one was thicker.
Older.
More worn.
“This is from Elena.””
Damon stood.
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””
“Because I wasn’t sure you were ready.””
Damon almost laughed.
“Ready?””
Robert nodded.
“To know why she left.””
Damon took the envelope.
His hands shook slightly.
“What does it say?””
Robert looked directly into his eyes.
“It tells you who forced her to run.””
Damon stared at the envelope.
A terrible feeling settled inside him.
Because deep down, he already knew.
The truth was waiting.
And it was closer than he wanted.
Slowly, he opened it.
The first line was written in Elena’s handwriting.
*Damon, if you’re reading this, then I failed to keep our daughter hidden.*
His heart stopped.
Then he read the next sentence.
And every piece of anger he had left disappeared.
*The person who destroyed our family is someone you still trust.*
Damon looked up.
Everyone was watching him.
Vanessa.
Adrian.
Robert.
And Amara.
Then his eyes landed on the only person who suddenly looked more afraid than anyone else.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly who Elena meant.
Vanessa whispered:
“No…”
Damon turned toward her.
“Who?””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
May you like
And after seven years of silence, she finally said the name.
“Your mother.””
