Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew My Husband's Secret

Vanessa snatched the photograph from my sweater.

I caught her wrist before she could pull it away completely.

“Let go,” she hissed.

“Not until you explain what this is.””

Her eyes darted toward the guest room.

“Keep your voice down.””

“You were standing beside Robert Hayes. Seven years ago. You were holding a baby wearing Ellie's bracelet. Now you want to tell me why.””

Vanessa twisted her wrist free.

“You have no idea what you're looking at.””

“Then explain it.””

“It's an old photograph.””

“I can see that.””

“Robert was a friend of my family.””

I stared at her.

“My husband's brother was supposedly halfway across the world. You were supposedly a stranger to our family. And yet you have a photograph together with a baby wearing my granddaughter's bracelet.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You always were dramatic.””

“Where is Robert?””

“I don't know.””

“Did he give you that bracelet?””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa, answer me.””

She slipped the photograph behind her back.

“You need to understand something, Margaret. Daniel is already under enormous pressure. The company is expanding.

He has employees depending on him. He doesn't need his mother inventing conspiracies because she dislikes his wife.””

“This isn't a conspiracy. It's a question.””

“And I don't owe you an answer.””

She turned to leave.

I stepped into her path.

“You will not threaten Ellie again.””

Vanessa laughed, a short, humorless sound.

“Threaten her? I am the only person in this house who understands how difficult she can be.””

“She is six.””

“And she knows how to manipulate adults. She cries, she plays innocent, and everyone rushes to rescue her. Even now, you've decided I'm a monster because she spilled juice.””

I felt the anger rise through me.

“You sent a six-year-old outside in a storm.””

“She needed to learn consequences.””

“By freezing in the dark?””

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“Do you know what Daniel will say when he hears that you took a photograph from my personal belongings and accused me of some ridiculous connection to his dead uncle?””

“Robert isn't dead.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You said you didn't know where he was,” I continued.

“You never said he was dead.””

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“You should go home, Margaret.””

“I am not leaving Ellie.””

“Then perhaps you should ask Daniel whether he wants you interfering in his marriage.””

She walked away before I could answer.

I returned to the guest room.

Ellie sat on the bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit. The blanket had slipped from her shoulders, and she was staring at the door.

“Where did Vanessa go?”” she asked.

“Downstairs.””

“Is she mad?””

“She is not going to hurt you.””

Ellie looked at me with the grave suspicion only a frightened child could manage.

“You don't know that.””

The words struck harder than any accusation Vanessa had made.

I sat beside her.

“You're right. I don't know everything that happens in this house. But I know what I saw tonight, and I won't pretend it was acceptable.””

Ellie slowly leaned against me.

“Can I sleep at your house?””

“Yes.””

“Forever?””

I kissed the top of her head.

“As long as you need.””

A car door slammed outside.

Then I heard Daniel's voice downstairs.

“Vanessa? Why is the front door open?””

Vanessa answered immediately.

“Thank goodness you're home. We had a terrible situation with Ellie.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Her version of the truth, arriving before mine.

Daniel climbed the stairs two at a time. He was still wearing his work clothes, his tie loose and his hair damp from the rain.

When he saw Ellie in pajamas, his expression softened.

“Hey, sweetheart. What's going on?””

Ellie looked at me.

“Tell Daddy,” I whispered.

Daniel knelt in front of her.

“Tell me what, pumpkin?””

Ellie opened her mouth.

Vanessa appeared behind him.

“Daniel, she wandered outside while Lila was distracted. Your mother found her in the yard and immediately accused me of deliberately putting her out there.””

Daniel straightened.

“Mom?””

“I found Ellie under the oak tree,” I said.

“She was soaked, freezing, and frightened. She told me Vanessa sent her outside because she spilled juice.””

Daniel looked between us.

“Vanessa?””

His wife shook her head, tears already gathering in her eyes.

“I would never do that. Ellie had a tantrum over the rug. I sent her upstairs to calm down. Apparently, she went outside when nobody was looking.””

Lila appeared at the top of the stairs.

“That isn't what you told me,” she said.

Vanessa spun around.

“What?””

“You told me Ellie was watching a movie upstairs. You never said anything about a tantrum.””

Daniel looked at Lila.

“Did you leave Ellie alone?””

The young woman hesitated.

“I was in the kitchen for a few minutes. Vanessa told me Ellie was upstairs.””

“Then how do you know what happened?”” Vanessa demanded.

“Were you watching the whole time?””

“No, but—”

“Exactly.””

Lila's eyes filled with tears.

“I shouldn't have taken my eyes off the hallway. I'm sorry. But I didn't put Ellie outside.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Everybody stop. Please.””

I stepped forward.

“Daniel, this isn't about a babysitter making a mistake. Ellie was deliberately sent outside. And there is something else you need to see.””

I reached for the photograph.

My pocket was empty.

I stared at the floor.

Vanessa had taken it.

She noticed my expression and gave the smallest shake of her head.

Don't.

The message was unmistakable.

“Mom?”” Daniel asked.

“I found a photograph in the storage closet.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“She's been rummaging through my things all evening. I don't know what she's talking about.””

“I saw Robert.””

Daniel's face changed.

“What?””

“Your father's brother. Robert. He was in a photograph with Vanessa, taken before she met you.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniel turned toward his wife.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa's tears stopped.

“Your mother is confused.””

“Are you saying she imagined the photograph?””

“I'm saying she found an old picture of someone who looked like Robert and decided to make it into something scandalous.””

“I know what Robert looks like.””

“Daniel, your father spent years telling you that Robert was a thief. You barely remember the man.””

“I remember enough.””

His voice had grown sharper.

Vanessa stepped closer to him.

“Your mother has never accepted me. She has been waiting for an excuse to undermine our marriage. Tonight, she found one.””

I watched my son struggle between the woman he loved and the mother who had raised him.

Then Ellie spoke.

“Daddy?””

He turned immediately.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can we go to Grandma's house?””

Daniel's expression crumpled.

“Why would you want to do that?””

Ellie glanced at Vanessa.

“Because when you're not here, she says I don't belong.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Have you been saying that to her?””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Finally, she said, “She misunderstands things.””

“I'm six,” Ellie whispered.

“I know what words mean.””

Daniel sat beside his daughter and took her small hand.

For a moment, I thought he had finally seen it.

Then Vanessa began to cry again.

“I cannot believe you would let your mother turn you against me in my own home.””

Daniel stood.

“Vanessa, please go downstairs.””

She stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“I need a minute with Ellie and my mother.””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“You're choosing them over me?””

“I'm asking you to give us a minute.””

She looked at me with naked hatred before walking away.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

“Mom, I don't know what to believe.””

“Believe what you saw. Look at your daughter's face.””

He crouched beside Ellie.

“I'm sorry, pumpkin.””

Ellie wrapped her arms around his neck, and Daniel held her as if he could make up for every frightening minute with one embrace.

Then he looked at me.

“Take her to your house tonight. I'll deal with Vanessa in the morning.””

I nodded.

But before we could leave, a phone began vibrating on the bedside table.

It was Vanessa's.

The screen lit up with a message preview.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: Did Margaret find the photograph? If she did, you need to tell Daniel what really happened to his first daughter.*

Daniel saw it.

So did I.

He picked up the phone.

“First daughter?”” he whispered.

The bedroom door opened behind us.

Vanessa stood there, staring at the screen.

For once, she had no tears ready.

“Daniel,” she said carefully, “give me my phone.””

He looked at her as though he had never seen her before.

“What does this mean?””

Vanessa took one step forward.

May you like

Then Daniel read the next message.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: Ellie was never supposed to survive.*
