Chapter 6: The Baby in the Hospital Photograph
Daniel drove as if the road were the only thing holding him together.
His knuckles were white against the steering wheel. Helen sat in the back, clutching the folder of records, while I watched the streetlights flicker across my son's face.
“Mom,” he said suddenly, “what if Ellie isn't mine?””
I turned toward him.
“She is your daughter in every way that matters.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
“I know.””
He swallowed.
“What if Claire was telling the truth? What if someone switched the babies?””
“Then we'll find out who did it.””
“And what if I raised someone else's child while my biological daughter is somewhere out there?””
The pain in his voice silenced me.
For seven years, he had carried Claire's memory like a wound that never healed. Ellie was the living part of that love. The child who had her mother's curls, her father's eyes, and the same habit of humming when she was nervous.
Now someone had taken even that certainty from him.
I reached across the center console and squeezed his arm.
“Whatever we discover, Ellie is not responsible for any of it.””
He nodded, but his eyes shone.
“I know.””
We arrived to find two police officers outside Daniel's house. Vanessa stood on the porch wrapped in a blanket, her makeup streaked beneath her eyes.
When she saw Daniel, she rushed toward him.
“You came.””
He stepped back.
“Show me the photograph.””
Her face fell.
“Daniel, I need you to listen to me first.””
“No. You've had seven years to explain. Show me the photograph.””
Vanessa looked at the officers.
“Can we speak inside?””
One officer shook his head.
“Ma'am, the house needs to remain undisturbed until we've completed our initial inspection.””
Vanessa gave Daniel a desperate look.
“Please. Someone has been in our bedroom. They took the lock off my desk and went through the drawers.””
“Did they take anything?””
“I don't know.””
“Then what did they leave?””
She reached into the pocket of her robe and pulled out a photograph.
Daniel took it.
I moved closer.
The picture showed Claire in a hospital corridor, her face pale with exhaustion. Beside her stood a nurse holding a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
A date stamp in the corner placed the photograph on the night Ellie was born.
But the nurse was not holding the baby I remembered.
The infant in the photograph had a dark birthmark shaped like a crescent near the left shoulder.
I had seen that mark before.
Not on Ellie.
On Vanessa.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“Where did you get this?””
“It was left on my desk,” Vanessa said.
“Along with a note.””
“What note?””
She handed him a folded piece of paper.
Only one sentence was written on it.
*Ask your wife what happened to the second child.*
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Second child?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know what it means.””
He laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it's true!””
“Then tell me why Claire's recording says you were trying to take her baby.””
Vanessa went completely still.
The officers exchanged a glance.
“You have a recording?”” she whispered.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled with tears, but this time I could not tell whether they were real.
“What did it say?””
“That Robert arranged something at the hospital. That Claire switched tags because she was afraid someone would take the wrong baby.””
Vanessa sank onto the porch step.
“Oh, God.””
Daniel crouched in front of her.
“Tell me the truth.””
She pressed both hands to her face.
“I was pregnant,” she whispered.
“By whom?””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“Robert.””
The words seemed to empty the air around us.
Daniel rose slowly.
“You had a child with my uncle?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Seven years ago.””
“And what happened to that baby?””
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“I was told she died.””
“Who told you?””
“Robert.””
I stepped forward.
“Why would Robert tell you your baby died if she survived?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because he said my daughter was in danger. He said my family would take her away from me if they discovered who the father was. He promised to protect her.””
“By giving her to Claire?””
“No. By making everyone believe she was Claire's.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who was the baby Claire gave birth to?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
She looked toward the dark windows of the house.
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“I was unconscious after the delivery. When I woke up, Robert told me my baby had died. He said Claire's daughter had survived, and that the hospital had agreed to keep the births confidential.””
Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.
“And you believed him?””
“I was twenty-four, terrified, and alone.””
“You were old enough to understand what you were doing when you married me.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I didn't know who you were at first.””
“But you knew eventually.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
She hesitated.
“Three months before our wedding.””
Daniel looked away.
I could see him trying to assemble a life from pieces that no longer fit.
“Why did you marry me?””
Vanessa's answer came so softly I almost missed it.
“Because Robert told me you could help me find my daughter.””
Daniel turned back.
“You married me to get access to my family?””
“I thought you might know what happened to her. Your father had money. Your family had connections. I believed you could help me.””
“And Ellie?””
Vanessa looked toward the house.
“When I saw Ellie, I thought she might be my daughter. She had the same eyes. The same hair. I couldn't stop looking at her.””
“Then why did you treat her so cruelly?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Because every time I looked at her, I remembered the baby I lost.””
“That is not an answer.””
“I know.””
“Did you put her outside tonight?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Yes.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Why?””
“Because she spilled the juice, and I was angry. I wanted her to be frightened. I wanted her to understand that she couldn't keep taking things from me.””
“Taking what?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Your attention. Your love. The family I thought I was supposed to have.””
Daniel stepped away from her.
“You punished a child because you were angry about something that happened before she could even speak.””
“I know.””
“You told her nobody would notice if she disappeared.””
Vanessa looked up, horrified.
“I didn't mean it.””
“But she heard it.””
For the first time, Vanessa had no defense.
One of the officers approached.
“Mr. Hayes, we need everyone to remain available while we document the scene. We'll also need to speak with Mrs. Hayes privately.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he turned toward me.
“Where's Ellie?””
“With Mrs. Collins. She's safe.””
“Take me to her.””
Vanessa rose suddenly.
“Daniel, wait.””
He stopped but did not turn around.
“I can help you find the baby. I can tell you everything I know about Robert.””
“Then tell the police.””
“They won't believe me.””
“That's no longer my problem.””
He walked toward the car.
As I followed him, Vanessa called after us.
“Daniel! I loved you!””
He turned once.
“No, Vanessa. You loved the family you thought I could give you. You never loved the one you actually had.””
We drove to Mrs. Collins's house.
Ellie was asleep on the sofa, curled beneath a knitted blanket with her rabbit tucked beneath her chin. Daniel knelt beside her and gently brushed a curl from her forehead.
She stirred.
“Daddy?””
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“Are you taking me home?””
Daniel swallowed hard.
“Not tonight.””
Her face crumpled.
“Did I do something bad?””
“No.”” He gathered her into his arms.
“No, Ellie. You did nothing wrong. I promise.””
She buried her face against his chest.
“Will Grandma come too?””
I knelt beside them.
“Always.””
For a few precious minutes, the three of us stayed together, holding on to the only truth that still felt solid.
Then Helen's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds before her expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Helen covered the receiver.
“The hospital has located the original birth register. It was sealed after Claire's death.””
Daniel stood.
“Then we can prove who Ellie is.””
Helen shook her head.
“Not quite. There is a second entry in the register. A second baby, born eleven minutes after Ellie.””
Daniel went pale.
“Twins?””
“Possibly. But the second child's identity was removed from the public record.””
She looked at me.
“And the person who authorized the removal was Thomas Hayes.””
My late husband's name struck me like a blow.
“That is impossible,” I whispered.
“Thomas died believing Robert had betrayed him.””
Helen opened a photograph sent by the hospital.
It showed the original register, with two birth entries and a signature at the bottom.
Thomas's signature.
Beside it was a handwritten instruction.
*Separate the children. Do not tell Margaret.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
“My father knew?””
Helen nodded.
“And if the second child survived, Margaret, your husband may have spent the last years of his life hiding the fact that you had another granddaughter.””
Then my phone rang.
An unfamiliar woman spoke before I could say hello.
“Mrs. Hayes? My name is Dr.
Elaine Porter. I was a nurse at St. Catherine's Hospital seven years ago.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want?””
“To tell you what happened the night Ellie was born.””
“Who was the second baby?””
The woman hesitated.
Then she whispered, “The second baby was Vanessa's daughter.””
A pause.
“And Mrs. Hayes, she's alive.””
I could barely breathe.
“Where is she?””
The nurse's voice trembled.
“She has been living under another name for seven years. But I think someone has just discovered who she really is.””
“Who?””
Before she could answer, I heard a door slam on her end of the line.
A man's voice shouted something in the background.
The nurse gasped.
“Mrs. Hayes, listen to me. If you want to save your granddaughter, you must find—”
The line went dead.
A second later, a message appeared on my phone.
It contained a photograph of a young woman standing outside a school.
She had Vanessa's eyes.
And around her wrist was a silver bracelet identical to Ellie's.
May you like
Under the photograph were six words.
*Your family has been lying for seven years.*
