Chapter 5: The Recording from the Night Ellie Was Born

Daniel read the message over my shoulder.

For a moment, he looked as though someone had struck him.

“That's impossible,” he whispered.

I took his hand.

“It's an accusation, not proof.””

“Someone knows what happened to Claire. Someone knows about this box. And someone thinks I had something to do with her death.””

His voice grew quieter.

“Mom, I loved Claire.””

“I know.””

“I was with her when she died.””

I studied his face.

“What do you mean?””

He swallowed.

“The night she died, I left the hospital to get Ellie a blanket. Claire was asleep when I went. When I came back, the nurses said she had suffered a sudden complication.””

He rubbed his palms against his trousers.

“They told me nothing could have been done.””

“Did you question it?””

“Of course I did. I asked for her records. They said the hospital had reviewed everything. There was no indication of wrongdoing.””

“Then why didn't you tell me about the discrepancy?””

“Because Helen said she couldn't establish anything. I thought reopening the investigation would only make things harder for Ellie.””

He looked at the silver key.

“I should have kept looking.””

We called Helen and arranged to meet her at her office. Daniel insisted on driving, though his hands shook on the steering wheel.

The city slid past the windows in gray streaks. Neither of us spoke much.

When we arrived, Helen was waiting beside a locked filing cabinet. She was seventy-two, with silver hair and the steady gaze of someone who had spent decades watching people destroy themselves with secrets.

She closed the office door behind us.

“Tell me exactly what happened tonight.””

Daniel explained the photograph, the birth certificate, and Vanessa's claim that Claire had stolen Ellie.

Helen listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she sat down heavily.

“I was afraid this day would come.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected. I never had enough evidence to accuse anyone.””

“Suspected what?””

Helen opened the filing cabinet and removed a thick folder.

“Seven years ago, Claire contacted me three days before Ellie was born. She was frightened. She told me Robert had arranged something involving the hospital and that she needed to protect the baby.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Claire asked me not to. She believed someone was monitoring her communications.””

Daniel stood.

“My wife says Claire stole Ellie. You're telling me Claire was frightened of my uncle. Who am I supposed to believe?””

“Neither of them without evidence.””

Helen placed the folder on the desk.

“Claire left instructions that I was to open a sealed envelope only if someone came forward claiming to be Ellie's biological mother or if there was reason to suspect that Claire's death had been deliberately concealed.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And you didn't think Vanessa's marriage to me qualified?””

“I didn't know Vanessa was the woman in the photograph until tonight. I never saw her name in the records I reviewed.””

I placed the silver key on the desk.

“Where is Box 114?””

Helen unlocked a drawer and removed a document with the name of a private storage facility.

“Claire rented a safe deposit box under her maiden name. The key opens it. I kept the address because she asked me to preserve the information.””

“Then let's go,” Daniel said.

Helen shook her head.

“Not until you understand something. The recording may be disturbing. Claire was under enormous stress, and we cannot assume everything she believed was true.””

Daniel's eyes hardened.

“I've spent seven years being told there was nothing more to know. I'm done being protected from the truth.””

Helen nodded.

“Then we go now.””

The storage facility stood behind a row of shuttered shops on the edge of town. Inside, a security guard checked Helen's identification and escorted us to a narrow room lined with metal deposit boxes.

Box 114 was at the bottom of the third cabinet.

The silver key turned with a dry click.

Inside lay a sealed envelope, a small digital recorder, and a photograph of Claire holding newborn Ellie.

On the back, Claire had written:

*For Margaret and Daniel. If Vanessa returns, do not let her take my daughter again.*

Daniel sank into a chair.

“Claire knew Vanessa?””

Helen removed the recorder.

“Let's find out.””

The device still had power. A single file appeared on the screen, dated seven years earlier.

Helen pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Claire's voice filled the room.

“If anyone is listening to this, I need you to understand that I did not abandon my daughter.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

Claire continued, her voice thin and frightened.

“Vanessa came to the hospital tonight. She told me the baby was hers, that I had no right to keep her. Robert was with her. He said the arrangement had changed.””

A door slammed in the background.

Claire began crying.

“I told them Daniel was the father. I told them he had a right to know.””

There was a long pause.

Then a man's voice.

Robert.

“You were never supposed to tell him.””

Claire answered, “You promised me the baby would be safe.””

“She's safer with Vanessa.””

“She's my daughter!””

A loud crash interrupted the recording.

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

“Keep playing it.””

Helen did.

Claire's voice returned, quieter now.

“If anything happens to me, Margaret, please protect Ellie. The bracelet is proof. I switched the tags because Robert said he would take the wrong baby if I didn't.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The wrong baby.

The photograph.

The birth certificate.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

“Switched the tags? What does that mean?””

The recording continued.

“I don't know whose baby Vanessa was carrying. I only know that the child she claimed was hers was not the baby she brought into the hospital. Robert arranged everything. He said it was the only way to keep Vanessa's family from finding her.””

A sharp breath.

Then Claire whispered the final words.

“But the baby I gave birth to was not the baby they tried to take.””

The recording stopped.

Silence filled the room.

Daniel stood abruptly.

“No. No, that doesn't make sense.””

Helen removed the recorder's memory card and checked the remaining files.

“There is another recording.””

She pressed play.

This time, Vanessa's voice came through clearly.

“You promised me she'd be mine.””

Robert answered, “She will be. But first, Claire must sign the papers.””

“What if she refuses?””

“Then Daniel will never know the difference.””

Vanessa began to cry.

“And the other baby?””

Robert's voice turned cold.

“There is no other baby. There is only the one we need to protect.””

The recording ended with a click.

Daniel backed away from the desk.

“My daughter,” he whispered.

“Are you telling me Ellie might not be my biological child?””

Helen did not answer immediately.

“The records were altered. We need DNA evidence and the original hospital documents before we can establish what happened.””

I looked at the photograph of Claire holding Ellie.

“What about the other baby?””

Helen folded her hands.

“That is the question Claire never managed to answer.””

Daniel's phone rang.

Vanessa's name appeared on the screen.

He answered, putting it on speaker.

“Where are you?”” he demanded.

Vanessa sounded breathless.

“Daniel, you need to come to the house.””

“Why?””

“Because someone has broken in.””

Daniel stiffened.

“Call the police.””

“I did. They're on their way.””

“Then what do you need me for?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because the person who broke in left something for you.””

“What?””

“A photograph.””

Daniel looked at me.

Vanessa continued.

“It shows Claire at the hospital the night she died. She's standing beside a nurse, and the nurse is holding a newborn baby.””

“What's so important about that?””

Vanessa began to sob.

May you like

“Because the baby isn't Ellie.””

The line went dead.
